Identifying dead regions in the cochlea through the TEN Test

An audiogram is not sufficient to indicate cochlear dead regions. Aim: To investigate cochlear dead regions in sensorineural hearing loss subjects using the TEN test. Site: CEDALVI/ HRAC-USP-Bauru/Sao Paulo/Brazil, August 2003 to February 2004. Study Design: A contemporary cross-sectional cohort study. Material and Methods: The TEN test was applied in three groups: G1(5 women with pure-tone thresholds within normal limits);G2(4 women and 5 men with moderate sensorineural flat hearing loss);G3(19 women and 24 men with mild to severe sloping sensorineural hearing loss). Results: In the G1 group the TEN value required to eliminate the test tone was, on average, close to the absolute threshold for all frequencies. No dead regions were found in the ears tested in group G2. 76 ears were tested in group G3, and six showed no evidence of dead regions in the cochlea. Conclusions:The TEN test was an effective test to indicate a dead region in the cochlea of subjects with sloping sensorineural hearing loss. There is evidence that pure-tone detection is different for subjects with high frequency sensorineural hearing loss and flat hearing loss;we observed a significant difference between the masked threshold and the absolute threshold only in sloping hearing loss and not for flat hearing loss. This paper presents a diagnosis framework based on a qualitative model of the process. Starting from a dynamic abstraction procedure under a defined operating mode a fuzzy partitioning of the variables evolution is made, defining for each measured or observable variable a number of qualitative states. Then time Fuzzy intervals representing the moment of state change are defined. The process behaviour of the operating mode is represented by Time Fuzzy Petri nets (TFPN) model and its evolution is the consequence of events detection due to the partitioning bounds crossing. According to the membership possibility of an event to the estimated time interval and to fuzzy influence knowledge, it is possible to reason about a fault occurrence. The fuzzy data issue from the TFPN components allows evaluating the causes of the fault or failure mode. A model-based diagnosis of a hybrid system is presented. Copyright © 2005 IFAC.

This paper proposes extending the CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture) security model to make possible the use of mandatory policies and policy management in distributed applications. Mandatory policies and a policy service were proposed for insertion in the JaCoWeb Project, which is developing an authorization scheme for large-scale networks based on CORBA security standards. In this paper, there is a combination of client-side and server-side access control, in a single domain. Our mandatory control is carried out on the level of ORB (Object Request Broker), on the client side, preventing, in unauthorized accesses, the emission of the corresponding requisition, the associated processing on the server and also, the generation of new requests through this unauthorized processing. In this paper, operations of security management not currently included in the OMG standards are also proposed. The paper further presents implementation results and an evaluation of these results based on common criteria. © 2005 Springer Science+Business Media, Inc.

Many works propose to use decentralized models to control and supervise physical systems. The decomposition tasks are, often, executed by an expert on the physical application. Recent works developed at LAAS-CNRS propose method to systematically decompose centralised models based on Petri nets. This method generates redundant information between the sub-modules. In some cases, these redundancies are necessary to guarantee the dependability of the system (by duplicating critical information). It can also be used by the diagnosis algorithm in order to improve the fault isolation (by pointing out the relation between sub-models) and to reduce the maintenance costs (by reducing the number of sub-models that must be modified to update the system). However, the duplication of information introduce extra costs that can be observed by the complexity of keeping the data coherence and by the surcharge of the communication network coming from the data exchange between interdependent sub-models. This paper presents a set of indicators that can be used by the designer's team to evaluate the consequences of redundant information introduction and to help them to decide the most appropriated configuration of the system

The classical approaches to teach the control systems present drawbacks, such as: (i) the general overview of the problem is sometimes underemphasized by the knowledge acquisition; (ii) they mainly use the academic examples that are only dealing with simple concepts and problems; (iii) laboratory experiments are either simple or under developed. Design aspects of control systems when applied to practical processes are important to improve the knowledge of the students and to motivate the utilization of modern methodologies as an emergent technology for the applications in industry. In this work, we point out some important aspects for conceiving a new educational product. We describe our experiences in creating a didactic environment for teaching and learning the control theories in engineering courses based on CACSD (computer aided control system design) and its extension to the research field of industrial problems. Two distinct proposals arise from these experiences for reducing the gap between the theoretical and practical classes, and for teaching the control systems development cycle using mathematical tools and real plants under the virtual instrumentation concept.

Thermoacoustic cooling for surface combatants

Currently he is the program manager for the TRITON Thermoacoustic Program and heads ARL Penn State's surface ship application effort in transferring new technology into the surface ship fleet. Over the last 15 years at ARL Penn State he served as program manager for marine composite applications programs as well as various ATD torpedo programs including the ADCAP upgrade. He spent 16 years working for the Navy where he served as Ship Design Manager for the MSH and Deputy Ship Design Manager for the DDG 51 class among other earlier duties. Mr. Johnson is a member of SNAME ASNE Tau Beta Pi the Association Scientists and Engineers (ASE) and recipient of the Navy's Meritorious Civilian Service Award. Steven Garrett:received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1977 followed by the Hunt Postdoctoral Fellowship of the Acoustical Society of America at University of Sussex in England and a Miller Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Physics Department at UC Berkeley. During that time his research centered on acoustical measurements of super fluid hydrodynamics. Dr. Garrett joined the faculty of the Naval Postgraduate School in 1982 where his research efforts were concentrated on the development of fiber-optic sensors systems automated in situ sonar transducer monitoring systems and thermoacoustic refrigeration. He left NPS in 1995 to assume his current position as the United Technologies Corporation Professor of Acoustics in the graduate program in acoustics and as senior scientist at the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State. Prof. Garrett is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and recipient of their Silver Medal in Interdisciplinary Acoustics. Robert Keolian:received his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Califo

Thermoacoustic cooling technology uses high amplitude acoustic standing waves in inert gasses to pump heat It requires no toxic, ozone-depleting, or global warming gasses and has few or no moving Parts, no sliding seals and requires no lubrication for robust and very low maintenance operation. Thermoacoustic cooling units have been demonstrated aboard the Space Shuttle in 1992 and aboard the USS Deyo (DD 989) in 1,995 to cool radar electronics. Currently, a 3-ton electrically driven unit is being built for shipboard application. This 3-ton unit will enable the ship designer to provide greater combat system survivability through distributed system architecture and reduced manning by unit simplicity and resulting high reliability. Additionally, waste heat cooling is an emerging thermoacoustic technology that could utilize stack gas heat from main gas turbine engines or from gas turbines generators to create shipboard cooling. The benefits of this waste heat cooling is lower infrared (IR) signature and reduced fuel consumption.
