Lifecycle Management of Product-service systems: A Preliminary Investigation of a White Goods Manufacturer

Product-Service systems (PSS) have been discussed as promising business strategies towards a circular economy (CE). However, PSS solutions are not necessarily more sustainable. PSS lifecycle management may play an important role to improve the offering and achieve sustainability benefits. Nevertheless, bottom-up issues for CE implementation in the industry such as lifecycle management are still little discussed in the literature. In this sense, this paper aims to explore a PSS business strategy adopted by a large white goods manufacturer that transitioned from a linear to a circular business, and the practices applied throughout the entire lifecycle that may be valuable to achieve CE requirements. A case-based approach was employed in this study and multiple sources of evidence were considered. Data were analyzed in the light of the literature, considering an inductive approach. The main preliminary findings suggest that resources consumption reduction and cost savings can be obtained through lifecycle management practices that take into consideration CE issues since the beginning of life of the PSS offering. Design practices, the adoption of different strategies at the end of life (reuse/remanufacturing or recycle), and the implementation of cleaner production practices are some of the identified practices that can contribute to achieve resource efficiency and CE requirements. This is a work in progress and further work is going to focus on a quantitative analysis of the environmental and economic performance of this PSS. In addition, as this study focused on a use-oriented PSS, future research may compare lifecycle management practices adopted by other and distinct PSS categories, and how different lifecycle management practices may contribute to achieving resource efficiency.

Artificial neural networks and fuzzy systems, have gradually established themselves as popular tools in approximating complicated nonlinear systems and time series forecasting. This paper investigates the hypothesis that the nonlinear mathematical models of multilayer perceptron and radial basis function neural networks and the Takagi-Sugeno (TS) fuzzy system are able to provide a more accurate out-of-sample forecast than the traditional autoregressive moving average (ARMA) and ARMA generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (ARMA-GARCH) linear models. Using series of Brazilian exchange rate (R$/US$) returns with 15 min., 60 min., 120 min., daily and weekly basis, the out-pf-sample one-step-ahead forecast performance is compared. Results indicate that forecast performance is strongly related to the series' frequency and the forecasting evaluation shows that nonlinear models perform better than their linear counterparts. In the trade strategy based on forecasts, nonlinear models achieve higher returns when compared to a buy-and-hold strategy and to the linear models.

Many works propose to use decentralized models to control and supervise physical systems. The decomposition tasks are, often, executed by an expert on the physical application. Recent works developed at LAAS-CNRS propose method to systematically decompose centralised models based on Petri nets. This method generates redundant information between the sub-modules. In some cases, these redundancies are necessary to guarantee the dependability of the system (by duplicating critical information). It can also be used by the diagnosis algorithm in order to improve the fault isolation (by pointing out the relation between sub-models) and to reduce the maintenance costs (by reducing the number of sub-models that must be modified to update the system). However, the duplication of information introduce extra costs that can be observed by the complexity of keeping the data coherence and by the surcharge of the communication network coming from the data exchange between interdependent sub-models. This paper presents a set of indicators that can be used by the designer's team to evaluate the consequences of redundant information introduction and to help them to decide the most appropriated configuration of the system

Injectable Platelet-Rich Fibrin in Contact with Bone Substitutes, Porous Zirconia, or Laser-Textured Implant Surfaces: A Detailed Morphological Analysis

The aim of the present study was to perform a detailed morphological analysis of an injectable platelet rich fibrin after combination with two different particulate hydroxyapatite-based granules, a porous zirconia block, and laser-textured zirconia or titanium surfaces. Blood samples were harvested from three participants to prepare the flowable injectable PRF in contact or not with particulate hydroxyapatite (Hap), bone mineral granules (DBBM), porous zirconia blocks, laser-textured titanium or zirconia surfaces. Optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to evaluate the fibrin network density, fibrin fibers’ diameter, blood cells, and the interaction of PRF with the biomaterials. Histomorphometry of the flowable PRF was also performed using the hematoxylin–eosin staining protocol. Specimens were independently evaluated by two blinded and well-trained researchers in histomorphometry and microscopy. Particulate Hap and DBBM shown different morphological aspects by SEM analyses since DBBM revealed macro- and micro-scale pores while Hap revealed a dense structure. Hydroxyapatite and DBBM granules were entirely embedded by the fibrin-network in the presence of leukocytes and blood platelets. The zirconia porous structured was filled with PRF and its components. Also, the laser-structured zirconia or implant surfaces were entirely coated with the PRF fibrin network embedding leukocytes and blood platelets. Laser-textured titanium surfaces revealed macro- and micro-scale irregularities that increase the surface area and retention of the injectable PRF. Histomorphometric analyses revealed complementary details on the distribution of lymphocytes, red blood cells, and fibrin associated with platelet aggregation. This paper addresses the problem of input-to-state stability (ISS) and stabilization of linear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) coupled with a system of homogeneous linear hyperbolic partial differential equations (PDEs) through the boundaries. First, a Lyapunov result characterizing the ISS property for finite-dimensional systems is extended to deal with coupled ODE and PDE systems. The proposed ISS condition is then applied to derive stability and stabilization conditions in terms of linear matrix inequality constraints assuming magnitude bounded disturbances at the boundaries. Two convex optimization problems are also proposed in order to obtain either an optimized reachable set estimate or a boundary controller that minimizes the disturbance effects on the ${\mathcal{L}}_{2} \times \mathbb{R}$-norm of the system states. Numerical examples illustrate the potential of the proposed approach.

Manufacturing systems’ efficiency depends on the proper assignment of orders to resources. Due to existing interdependencies, the integrated consideration of production, inventory and delivery processes can improve the overall manufacturing performance. However, the integration can result in high complexity and stochasticity. Thus, the three areas are rarely addressed together. Thereof, this paper proposes an integrated simulation-based optimization method to cope with uncertainty and complexity. The proposed approach was compared to a benchmark approach and the obtained results show that the first is able to handle the complexity and stochasticity of real-world manufacturing systems, surpassing the performance of the latter.

Renewable energy technologies integration within industrial districts can boost carbon emissions reduction in the industry sector. The eco-industrial parks model promotes the sustainable use of energy and the application of energy synergies and energy exchanges that can include renewable sources of energy. This paper presents an optimization methodology based on a multi-stakeholder perspective to evaluate energy symbiosis including the integration of renewable energy sources within the parks. The study results in three scenarios providing to managers of single firms and parks relevant information for supporting decision making regarding the economic sustainability and the environmental impacts of the energy synergies. The results show that the optimization of the collective point of view ensures more efficient management of the energy supplied by renewables as well as by firms that can provide an energy surplus.

The soybean complex is one of the largest agribusiness sectors in Brazil. Growers are distributed in different regions of the country and far from cargo ports. The state of Mato Grosso accounts for the largest number of soybeans grown in Brazil and is responsible for around 30% of Brazil's production. The commercialization and distribution of soybean crops are controlled by trading companies who make decisions on exports and the destination of soybean exports. The objective of this work is to determine the influence of trading companies in the Mato Grosso soybean network. To this end, we conducted a network analysis using social networking analysis tools. The results show that two trading companies centralize the commercialization between the Mato Grosso growers and the buyers, and five countries are the major destination of Mato Grosso soybean exports. © ILS 2018 - Information systems, Logistics and Supply Chain, Proceedings. The theme of Sustainable Development has gained more and repercussion in the society spheres contributing to a greater awareness of the need for natural resources conservation, as well as the challenge of keeping promoting the socio-economic development of the regions. One of the key issues for this sustainable development is in the Electric Power Generation with the increasing use of renewable energy, and less harm to the environment. In this scenario, the state of Paraná historically has been one of the largest producers of electricity in the country, almost entirely through hydroelectric plants due to the large watershed in the state. However, the use of this source is in constant decline due to the hydric potential exhaustion, and also due to the pressure from society related to the environmental, social and economic impacts occasioned by its installation. To overcome these limitations, other sources have been studied and applied such as the biomass, the wind and photovoltaic in isolated systems. Most recently, as a function of the Call No. 13/2011 and the Resolution 482/2012 from ANEEL (Brazilian Electricity Regulatory Agency), there was also the possibility of generating electricity through Grid-connected Photovoltaic Power systems. These systems have been widely employed in the urban environment as electricity generators near the distributed point of consumption, intensely applied in many countries, especially in Europe, usually requiring no additional area, since they can be installed on the roof of the building or integrated in it. This paper aims to present the Photovoltaic Map of the Paraná State, Brazil, which represents the potential for generating electricity through solar photovoltaic power, and also to compare the preliminary results of the values of electricity generation measured in the Gridconnected Photovoltaic Power System located at the Technological Federal University of Paraná (UTFPR) in the city of Curitiba, capital of Paraná-Brazil.

There is a growing concern about food production, the rational use of energy, and the impacts caused by anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions on transport systems. With this concern in mind, the objective of this paper is to discuss the economic and environmental performance of different combinations of cargo vehicles. To do so, we explored the flow of soybean from Mato Grosso state to the ports. The results show that the combination of the stump semi-trailer presented the best economic performance, while the combination of the 'rodotrem' semi-trailer presented the best environmental performance.
