Computational time analysis of the numerical solution of 3D electrostatic Poisson’s equation

3D Poisson’s equation is solved numerically to simulate the electric potential in a prototype design of electrohydrodynamic (EHD) ion-drag micropump. Finite difference method (FDM) is employed to discretize the governing equation. The system of linear equations resulting from FDM is solved iteratively by using the sequential Jacobi (SJ) and sequential Gauss-Seidel (SGS) methods, simulation results are also compared to examine the difference between the results. The main objective was to analyze the computational time required by both the methods with respect to different grid sizes and parallelize the Jacobi method to reduce the computational time. In common, the SGS method is faster than the SJ method but the data parallelism of Jacobi method may produce good speedup over SGS method. In this study, the feasibility of using parallel Jacobi (PJ) method is attempted in relation to SGS method. MATLAB Parallel/Distributed computing environment is used and a parallel code for SJ method is implemented. It was found that for small grid size the SGS method remains dominant over SJ method and PJ method while for large grid size both the sequential methods may take nearly too much processing time to converge. Yet, the PJ method reduces computational time to some extent for large grid sizes.

On the common modulus attack into the LUC4,6 cryptosystem

The LUC4,6 cryptosystem is a system analogy with RSA cryptosystem and extended from LUC and LUC3 cryptosystems. The process of encryption and decryption are derived from the fourth order linear recurrence sequence and based on Lucas function. This paper reports an investigation into the common modulus attack on the LUC4,6 cryptosystem. In general, the common modulus attack will be succeeded if the sender sends the plaintext to two users used same RSA-modulus and both of encryption keys of them are relatively prime to each other. However, based on the characteristics of high order Lucas sequence, the LUC4,6 cryptosystem is unattackable

Several contributions of the Thrace group to magnetospheric, solar, and planetary physics over the last three decades are summarized from the perspective of a paradigm shift in nonlinear plasma physics. The work by Dennis Papadopoulos on plasma instabilities has been a source of inspiration for our magnetospheric studies including the introduction of the chaos hypothesis.

Modelling and Prediction of Spark‐ignition Engine Power Performance Using Incremental Least Squares Support Vector Machines

Modern automotive spark‐ignition (SI) power performance usually refers to output power and torque, and they are significantly affected by the setup of control parameters in the engine management system (EMS). EMS calibration is done empirically through tests on the dynamometer (dyno) because no exact mathematical engine model is yet available. With an emerging nonlinear function estimation technique of Least squares support vector machines (LS‐SVM), the approximate power performance model of a SI engine can be determined by training the sample data acquired from the dyno. A novel incremental algorithm based on typical LS‐SVM is also proposed in this paper, so the power performance models built from the incremental LS‐SVM can be updated whenever new training data arrives. With updating the models, the model accuracies can be continuously increased. The predicted results using the estimated models from the incremental LS‐SVM are good agreement with the actual test results and with the almost same average accuracy of retraining the models from scratch, but the incremental algorithm can significantly shorten the model construction time when new training data arrives.

Case‐based Reasoning for Automotive Engine Performance Tune‐up

The automotive engine performance tune‐up is greatly affected by the calibration of its electronic control unit (ECU). The ECU calibration is traditionally done by trial‐and‐error method. This traditional method consumes a large amount of time and money because of a large number of dynamometer tests. To resolve this problem, case based reasoning (CBR) is employed, so that an existing and effective ECU setup can be adapted to fit another similar class of engines. The adaptation procedure is done through a more sophisticated step called case‐based adaptation (CBA) [1, 2]. CBA is an effective knowledge management tool, which can interactively learn the expert adaptation knowledge. The paper briefly reviews the methodologies of CBR and CBA. Then the application to ECU calibration is described via a case study. With CBR and CBA, the efficiency of calibrating an ECU can be enhanced. A prototype system has also been developed to verify the usefulness of CBR in ECU calibration.

With the development of modern technology, modern vehicles adopt electronic control system for injection and ignition. In traditional way, whenever there is any malfunctioning in an automotive engine, an automotive mechanic usually performs a diagnosis in the ignition system of the engine to check any exceptional symptoms. In this paper, we present a case‐based reasoning (CBR) approach to help solve human diagnosis problem. Nevertheless, one drawback of CBR system is that the case library will be expanded gradually after repeatedly running the system, which may cause inaccuracy and longer time for the CBR retrieval. To tackle this problem, case‐based maintenance (CBM) framework is employed so that the case library of the CBR system will be compressed by clustering to produce a set of representative cases. As a result, the performance (in retrieval accuracy and time) of the whole CBR system can be improved.

CLIR techniques searches unrestricted texts and typically extract term and relationships from bilingual electronic dictionaries or bilingual text collections and use them to translate query and/or document representations into a compatible set of representations with a common feature set. In this paper, we focus on dictionary‐based approach by using a bilingual data dictionary with a combination to statistics‐based methods to avoid the problem of ambiguity also the development of human computer interface aspects of NLP (Natural Language processing) is the approach of this paper. The intelligent web search with regional language like Bengali is depending upon two major aspect that is CLIA (Cross language information access) and NLP. In our previous work with IIT, KGP we already developed content based CLIA where content based searching in trained on Bengali Corpora with the help of Bengali data dictionary. Here we want to introduce intelligent search because to recognize the sense of meaning of a sentence and it has a better real life approach towards human computer interactions.

This paper reports simulation heuristics of Monte‐Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) and shows an application example. MCTS introduced by Coulom is a best‐first search where pseudorandom simulations guide the solution of problem. Recent improvements on MCTS have produced strong computer Go program, which has a large search space, and the success is a hot topic for selecting the best move. So far, most of reports about MCTS have been on two‐player games, and MCTS has been used rarely for one‐player perfect‐information games. MCTS does not need admissible heuristic, so the application of MCTS for one‐player games might be an interesting alternative. Additionally, one‐player games like puzzles are determinately operated only by one player’s decision, so the sequences of changes in state are describable as a network diagram with interdependence between operations. If MCTS for one‐player games is available as a meta‐heuristic algorithm, we can use this algorithm for not only combinatorial optimization problems, but also many practical problems. Especially, as MCTS does not fully depend on evaluation function, so the solutions based on MCTS remain effective if objective function is modified. This paper firstly investigates on the application of Single Player MCTS (SP‐MCTS) introduced by Schadd et al. to a puzzle game called Bubble Breaker. Next this paper shows the effectiveness of new simulation strategies of SP‐MCTS, and considers the differences between each parameter. Based on the results, this paper discusses the application potentiality of SP‐MCTS for a scheduling problem.

Effects of Distance between Classes and Training Dataset Size on Imbalance Datasets

This paper analyzes the effects of distance between classes and training datasets size to XCS classifier system on imbalanced datasets. Our purpose is to answer the question whether the loss of performance incurred by the classifier faced with class imbalance problems stems from the class imbalance per se or it can be explained in some other ways. The experiments from 250 artificial imbalanced datasets show that XCS can perform well in some imbalance domains if the training datasets size is large enough and the distance between classes is appropriate. Thus, it dose not seem fair to correlate imbalance datasets directly to the loss performance of XCS. Through this research, we also know what kinds of datasets are suitable for training XCS and dealing with class imbalances alone will not always help improve performance of classifiers.

Improved Fuzzy Clustering Techniques for Categorical Data

Clustering is a widely used technique in data mining application for discovering patterns in underlying data. Most traditional clustering algorithms are limited in handling datasets that contain categorical attributes. Howerver, datasets with categorical types of attributes are common in real life data mining problem. For these data sets, no inherent distance measure, like the Euclidean distance, would work to compute the distance between two catgorical objects. In this article, we have described differential evolution, genetic algorithm and simulated annealing based fuzzy clustering. The performance of the proposed algorithms have been compared with that of different well known categorical data clustering algorithms and demonstrated for a variety of artificial and real life categorical data sets. Statistical significance test has been performed to establish the superiority of the proposed algorithms.
