Improved phase-field-based lattice Boltzmann method for thermocapillary flow

In this paper, we present an improved phase-field-based lattice Boltzmann (LB) method for thermocapillary flows with large density, viscosity, and thermal conductivity ratios. The present method uses three LB models to solve the conservative Allen-Cahn equation, the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, and the temperature equation. To overcome the difficulty caused by the convection term in solving the convection-diffusion equation for the temperature field, we first rewrite the temperature equation as a diffuse equation where the convection term is regarded as the source term and then construct an improved LB model for the diffusion equation. The macroscopic governing equations can be recovered correctly from the present LB method; moreover, the present LB method is much simpler and more efficient. In order to test the accuracy of this LB method, several numerical examples are considered, including the planar thermal Poiseuille flow of two immiscible fluids, the two-phase thermocapillary flow in a nonuniformly heated channel, and the thermocapillary Marangoni flow of a deformable bubble. It is found that the numerical results obtained from the present LB method are consistent with the theoretical prediction and available numerical data, which indicates that the present LB method is an effective approach for the thermocapillary flows.

Highly oscillatory integrals of composite type arise in electronic engineering and their calculations are a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose two Gaussian quadrature rules for computing such integrals. The first one is constructed based on the classical theory of orthogonal polynomials and its nodes and weights can be computed efficiently by using tools of numerical linear algebra. An interesting connection between the quadrature nodes and the Legendre points is proved and it is shown that the rate of convergence of this rule depends solely on the regularity of the non-oscillatory part of the integrand. The second one is constructed with respect to a sign-changing function and the classical theory of Gaussian quadrature can not be used anymore. We explore theoretical properties of this Gaussian quadrature, including the trajectories of the quadrature nodes and the convergence rate of these nodes to the endpoints of the integration interval, and prove its asymptotic error estimate under suitable hypotheses. We bridge fairness gaps from a statistical perspective by selectively utilizing either conditional distance covariance or distance covariance statistics as measures to assess the independence between predictions and sensitive attributes. We enhance fairness by incorporating sample (conditional) distance covariance as a manageable penalty term into the machine learning process. Additionally, we present the matrix form of empirical (conditional) distance covariance for parallel calculations to enhance computational efficiency. Theoretically, we provide a proof for the convergence between empirical and population (conditional) distance covariance, establishing necessary guarantees for batch computations. Through experiments conducted on a range of real-world datasets, we have demonstrated that our method effectively bridges the fairness gap in machine learning. Copyright © 2024, The Authors. In this paper, we present a novel framework termed Anisotropic Spectral Manifold Wavelet Transform (ASMWT) for shape analysis. ASMWT comprehensively analyzes the signals from multiple directions on local manifold regions of the shape with a series of low-pass and band-pass frequency filters in each direction. Using the ASMWT coefficients of a very simple function, we efficiently construct a localizable and discriminative multiscale point descriptor, named as the Anisotropic Spectral Manifold Wavelet Descriptor (ASMWD). Since the filters used in our descriptor are direction-sensitive and able to robustly reconstruct the signals with a finite number of scales, it makes our descriptor be intrinsic-symmetry unambiguous, compact as well as efficient. The extensive experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves significant performance than several state-of-the-art methods when applied in vertex-wise shape matching. © 2018 The Author(s).

In this paper, a general lattice Boltzmann (LB) model is proposed for the high-order nonlinear partial differential equation with the form ∂tϕ+∑k=1mαk∂xkΠk(ϕ)=0 (1≤k≤m≤6), αk are constant coefficients, Πk(ϕ) are some known differential functions of ϕ. As some special cases of the high-order nonlinear partial differential equation, the classical (m)KdV equation, KdV-Burgers equation, K(n,n)-Burgers equation, Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation, and Kawahara equation can be solved by the present LB model. Compared to the available LB models, the most distinct characteristic of the present model is to introduce some suitable auxiliary moments such that the correct moments of equilibrium distribution function can be achieved. In addition, we also conducted a detailed Chapman-Enskog analysis, and found that the high-order nonlinear partial differential equation can be correctly recovered from the proposed LB model. Finally, a large number of simulations are performed, and it is found that the numerical results agree with the analytical solutions, and usually the present model is also more accurate than the existing LB models [H. Lai and C. Ma, Sci. China Ser. G 52, 1053 (2009); H. Lai and C. Ma, Phys. A (Amsterdam) 388, 1405 (2009)] for high-order nonlinear partial differential equations.

Given a curve Γ and a set Λ in the plane, the concept of the Heisenberg uniqueness pair (Γ, Λ) was first introduced by Hedenmalm and Motes-Rodrígez (Ann. of Math. 173(2),1507-1527, 2011, [11]) as a variant of the uncertainty principle for the Fourier transform. The main results in [11] concern the hyperbola Γ∊ = {(x1, x2) ∈ 2, x1x2 = ∊} (0 ≠ ∊ ∈ ) and lattice-crosses Λαβ = (α× {0}) ∪ ({0} × β) (α, β > 0), where it’s proved that (Γ∊, Λαβ) is a Heisenberg uniqueness pair if and only if αβ ≤ 1/|∊|. In this paper, we aim to study the endpoint case (i.e., ∊ = 0 in Γ∊) and investigate the following problem: what’s the minimal amount of information required on Λ (the zero set) to form a Heisenberg uniqueness pair? When Λ is contained in the union of two curves in the plane, we give characterizations in terms of some dynamical system conditions. In this work, we consider a general consistent and conservative phase-field model for the incompressible two-phase flows. In this model, not only the Cahn-Hilliard or Allen-Cahn equation can be adopted, but also the mass and the momentum fluxes in the Navier-Stokes equations are reformulated such that the consistency of reduction, consistency of mass and momentum transport, and the consistency of mass conservation are satisfied. We further develop a lattice Boltzmann (LB) method, and show that through the direct Taylor expansion, the present LB method can correctly recover the consistent and conservative phase-field model. Additionally, if the divergence of the extra momentum flux is seen as a force term, the extra force in the present LB method would include another term which has not been considered in the previous LB methods. To quantitatively evaluate the incompressibility and the consistency of the mass conservation, two statistical variables are introduced in the study of the deformation of a square droplet, and the results show that the present LB method is more accurate. The layered Poiseuille flow and a droplet spreading on an ideal wall are further investigated, and the numerical results are in good agreement with the analytical solutions. Finally, the problems of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, a single rising bubble, and the dam break with the high Reynolds numbers and/or large density ratios are studied, and it is found that the present consistent and conservative LB method is robust for such complex two-phase flows.

In this paper, we first develop a fourth-order multiple-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann (MRT-LB) model for the one-dimensional convection-diffusion equation (CDE) with the constant velocity and diffusion coefficient, where the D1Q3 (three discrete velocities in one-dimensional space) lattice structure is used. We also perform the Chapman-Enskog analysis to recover the CDE from the MRT-LB model. Then an explicit four-level finite-difference (FLFD) scheme is derived from the developed MRT-LB model for the CDE. Through the Taylor expansion, the truncation error of the FLFD scheme is obtained, and at the diffusive scaling, the FLFD scheme can achieve the fourth-order accuracy in space. After that, we present a stability analysis and derive the same stability condition for the MRT-LB model and FLFD scheme. Finally, we perform some numerical experiments to test the MRT-LB model and FLFD scheme, and the numerical results show that they have a fourth-order convergence rate in space, which is consistent with our theoretical analysis.
