Simulation studies require thorough validation to ensure model accuracy, reliability, and credibility. While validation typically focuses on the simulation model itself, additional artifacts also influence study outcomes. Conceptual models, comprising research questions, requirements, inputs and outputs, model content, assumptions, and simplifications, provide context information for interpreting results and assessing model suitability. Validating other simulation artifacts for their fitness-for-purpose is complex, necessitating structured arguments to increase confidence. This paper explores when and how validation arguments should be constructed throughout the modeling and simulation lifecycle. Drawing on concepts from safety assurance cases, it defines key claims for the various artifacts, discusses validation arguments from different perspectives – including process, product, people, and project – and illustrates them through a computational biology case study. We conclude with a discussion of the suitability of such structured arguments for the comprehensive validation of simulation studies. © 2024 IEEE.

It is often challenging to obtain large number of labeled data for retinal layer segmentation in optical coherence tomography scans due to the need for expert ophthalmologists. On the other hand, huge quantities of unlabeled scans are often collected in medical centers. In this work, we propose a novel generative adversarial learning framework, GOctSeg, for semi-supervised retinal layer segmentation. GOctSeg consists of a U-Net generator, a discriminator, and a segmentor. The generation of synthetic images from synthetic labels is performed with the U - Net generator, which is used as input together with labeled B-scan patches into the Segmentor network for retinal layer boundary regression. We have also evaluated our methodology on two datasets, the Data Resource for Multiple Sclerosis and Healthy Controls and the Duke University Diabetic Macular Edema dataset and demonstrated that our method outperformed or is comparable to other state-of-the-art methods with limited labels for boundary regression. Furthermore, we investigated the performance of GOctSeg on images with low signal-to-noise ratio or with blurred boundaries and showed that our methodology remained robust. Through ablation studies, we demonstrated the utility of synthetic labels for generative learning to guide in semi-supervised retinal layer segmentation. We envision that this methodology can be used to significantly reduce the effort required to obtain labels when there is label scarcity in clinical settings. © 2024 IEEE.

Epidemic models have become increasingly useful, especially in the wake of the recent COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing the crucial role of human behavior in the spread of disease. There has been a recent rise in the usage and popularity of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), such as ChatGPT especially with its ability to mimic human behavior. In this study, we demonstrate a novel application of GenAI for epidemic modeling. We employed GenAI for creating agents living in a hypothetical town in simulations and simulating their behavior within the context of an ongoing pandemic. We performed a series of simulations to quantify the impact of agent traits and the availability of information for health condition, virus, and government guidelines on the disease spread patterns in terms of peak time and epidemic duration. We also characterized the most influential factors in agents’ decision-making using random forest model. © 2024 IEEE.

The melodious recitation of Quran verses, known as Tarannum, impacts the reciters’ and audiences’ understanding and perception. Several experts on Tarannum melodies often train their apprentices in continuous lessons covering techniques on voice activation and correct recitations. The availability of an interactive application can help promote constant training and effectively complement the lessons. An interactive approach to Tarannum lessons is not widely available and is often developed for recognising the Arabic alphabet rather than practising melodies and recitations. A mobile application is one of the most widely implemented learning and training applications, as it offers interactive feedback to motivate users to continue the lessons repetitively. The lack of mobile applications to promote Tarannum learning reduces the interest in becoming competent reciters. This is because traditional melody training requires one-on-one instruction from an instructor to perfect the melody. The lack of an interactive Tarannum application affects Muslims who cannot practice the Tarannum skills and foundation through conventional learning sessions. Therefore, this project proposes a mobile learning application for Tarannum. The application can assist Muslims in learning Tarannum by improving their melodic recitation techniques and, simultaneously, can give the user an enjoyable experience by proposing a game-based learning approach. This was done in response to the need for an application to assist Muslims in learning Tarannum and evaluating their Tarannum techniques. For the extended project, the application can be enhanced by implementing an algorithm for Tarannum melody detection that will be more helpful for people who want to learn Tarannum. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think, and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. Automatic detection, as in a clinical interview can be derived from various modalities which includes video, audio, and text. Among them, detection from text data has emerged as a crucial task in mental health monitoring. In this study, we propose a hybrid deep learning model combining Convolutional Neural Networks (CNN), Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Units (BiGRU), and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) layers to enhance depression detection accuracy. Using BERT embedding for robust feature extraction, the proposed model processes social media or clinical text data to identify signs of depression. Additionally, we incorporate a novel data augmentation technique using synonym replacement to address data imbalance and improve generalization. Evaluations are conducted using key performance metrics, including accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 score. With an accuracy of 86.2 %, the results demonstrate that the combined CNN-BiGRU-BiLSTM architecture, alongside BERT embedding and augmented data, significantly improves classification performance compared to traditional models. This approach shows promise in contributing to more effective automatic depression detection systems.

The detection of Intradialytic hypotension (IDH) and hypertension (IDHTN) during hemodialysis treatment is necessary as these conditions can severely impact a patient's health and increase the risk of mortality. Early detection and intervention are crucial to prevent harm and ensure successful treatment outcomes. However, gathering hemodialysis data can be challenging and time-consuming, which may lead to a small dataset. Moreover, this problem will be more complex when it involves other issues, such as inconsistent and missing data. Thus, this study aimed to adapt the data profiling technique to solve the mentioned problems the process involved three phases: structure discovery, content discovery, and relationship discovery the data profiling technique created five datasets through weight vector categorization: (1) Full Dataset, (2) Mid Moderate and Low Moderate (MMLM), (3) Strong and High Moderate (SHM), (4) combination of MLMM and SHM and (5) Strong Only. Four classifiers, Naive Bayes (NB), Support Vector Machine (SVM), Linear Regression (LR), and K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), were used to predict the occurrence of IDH and IDHTN, and their accuracy was observed and evaluated the study found that KNN gave the best performance, with an average accuracy of 81.54% for all datasets, compared to the other three classifiers the study demonstrates the effectiveness of data profiling techniques in improving the accuracy of machine learning models, even with small datasets. Future research could expand the study by including more factors and data to provide a comprehensive view of patients and predict the occurrence of IDH and IDHTN. © 2023 IEEE.

The increasing number of patients in hospitals, the need for telehealth among the elderly, and the impact of the pandemic highlight the need for telemedicine services. Among them, the telemedicine consultation system (TCS) is the medium for doctors to communicate with patients in the telemedicine system. However, due to the problem of safety technology, it has not been widely applied. This literature review conducts a comprehensive search using keywords in authoritative index databases such as SCI and Scopus, aiming to find out the existing security problems and solutions of TCS, and establish security technology evaluation criteria for TCS in identity authentication, system authorization, data privacy protection and data transmission security. At the same time, a TCS technology evaluation criteria model is established to classify the security level of the system. © 2024 IEEE.
