Wide field of view and light weight optics are critical for advanced eyewear,with applications in augmented/virtual reality and night *** refractive lenses are often stacked to correct aberrations at a wide field of view,leading to limited performance and increased size and *** particular,simultaneously achieving a wide field of view and large aperture for light collection is desirable but challenging to realize in a compact ***,we demonstrate a wide field of view(greater than 60°)meta-optic doublet eyepiece with an entrance aperture of 2.1 *** the design wavelength of 633 nm,the meta-optic doublet achieves comparable performance to a refractive lens-based eyepiece *** meta-doublet eyepiece illustrates the potential for meta-optics to play an important role in the development of high-quality monochrome near-eye displays and night vision systems.

Autonomous embodied navigation task generation from natural language dialogues

Robots are increasingly being deployed in densely populated environments, such as homes, hotels, and office buildings, where they rely on explicit instructions from humans to perform tasks. However, complex tasks often require multiple instructions and prolonged monitoring, which can be time-consuming and demanding for users. Despite this, there is limited research on enabling robots to autonomously generate tasks based on real-life scenarios. Advanced intelligence necessitates robots to autonomously observe and analyze their environment and then generate tasks autonomously to fulfill human requirements without explicit commands. To address this gap, we propose the autonomous generation of navigation tasks using natural language dialogues. Specifically, a robot autonomously generates tasks by analyzing dialogues involving multiple persons in a real office environment to facilitate the completion of item transportation between various *** propose the leveraging of a large language model(LLM) through chain-of-thought prompting to generate a navigation sequence for a robot from dialogues. We also construct a benchmark dataset consisting of 625 multiperson dialogues using the generation capability of LLMs. Evaluation results and real-world experiments in an office building demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

In the case of standalone houses, ensuring a continuous and regulated power supply from renewable sources is crucial. To address their unpredictable nature, an environmentally conscious hybrid renewable energy system combining photovoltaic panels, a battery, and a Diesel generator is considered. A software application simulates the power flow in a standalone house with common AC loads, analysing summer and winter scenarios over 24 hours. The strategy employed provides an optimal energy management by using the Diesel generator only during peak demand when PV is available and to cover loads and maintain battery life when PV is not in operation. The simulation results provide valuable insights for designing such hybrid energy systems and for enhancing system responsiveness to dynamic energy demands. © 2024 IEEE.

Integrating solar photovoltaic (PV), wind, and battery storage (BS) systems into the grid introduces significant power quality (PQ) challenges. In particular, the intermittent nature of solar PV and wind energy systems (WES), combined with nonlinear loads, can lead to grid instability. As a result, maintaining a reliable and high-quality power supply to consumers becomes a substantial challenge. This article presents two novel solutions to address these challenges: the anti-windup mixed-order generalized integrator (AWMOGI) and the adaptive delay operation period filter (ADOPF). The AWMOGI effectively extracts fundamental components from distorted utility grid voltages, minimizing DC offset and reducing steady-state oscillations. Meanwhile, the ADOPF swiftly captures positive sequence voltage components by introducing a two-sampling-interval delay in the d-q coordinate system. The hierarchical-loop controller parameters are optimized using a customized Harris Hawks Optimization (HHO) algorithm, which enhances error reduction and facilitates rapid establishment of reference values for DC-link voltage loop control. An adaptive dynamic power management scheme also enables the microgrid (MG) to manage surplus power from MG sources, reducing stress on the BS and ensuring DC-link voltage stability. The experimental results demonstrate significant improvements in handling utility grid abnormalities, dynamic loads, and intermittent microgrid source operation. The experimental results show a zero DC-off set and steady-state errors, a fast computational time of 35e-5s, and the THD of grid currents of 3.16%, which complies with the IEEE 519 standards. © 1975-2011 IEEE.

Nano-structured metamaterial absorber based on a plus-shaped resonator for optical wavelength applications

Metamaterial absorbers have sparked widespread interest due to their remarkable electromagnetic properties, which enable a wide range of applications in light absorption and manipulation. This study introduces a new three-layer nanomaterial absorber (NMA) unit cell composed of nickel (Ni), silicon dioxide (SiO2), and nickel (Ni) designed to operate across the entire visible spectrum (390–780 nm). We demonstrate the NMA’s exceptional absorption characteristics through rigorous numerical simulations using industry-standard software, achieving a mean absorption rate of 97.17% and a maximum absorption peak of 99.99% at 694.89 nm under standard angles. Furthermore, the NMA unit cell has good impedance matching, efficient coupling between capacitors and inductors, and significant plasmonic resonance properties. Fabrication feasibility and potential applications in solar energy harvesting, optical sensing, and light detection. © The Author(s) 2024.

Stable, deep blue tandem phosphorescent organic light-emitting diode enabled by the double-sided polariton-enhanced Purcell effect

Blue phosphorescent organic light-emitting diodes (PHOLEDs) are highly efficient, although their short operational lifetimes have limited their commercial acceptance in displays and lighting. A high density of energetic triplet excitons accumulates in the emission layer that eventually annihilate, leading to molecular degradation. Here we report long operational lifetime, efficient and deep blue tandem PHOLEDs using the polariton-enhanced Purcell (PEP) effect at both the diode cathode and anode. The Pt- and Ir-complex-based bottom-emitting tandem PEP-PHOLEDs show a tenfold increase in lifetime and colour saturation compared with their analogous single-junction PHOLEDs. Particularly, the Pt-complex-based tandem PEP-PHOLED on flat glass substrates has lifetimes of LT90 = 830 ± 30 h and 1,800 ± 100 h (LT90 = the time to reach 90% of the initial luminance of 500 cd m−2), and forward-viewing external quantum efficiencies of 36.8 ± 0.5% or 56.0 ± 1.0% without or with substrate light extraction, respectively. The lifetime enhancement is equivalent to 250 times that of conventional single-junction Ir-based PHOLED lifetimes with similar blue chromaticity coordinates. The tandem PEP-PHOLED has chromaticity coordinates of CIExy = (0.14, 0.12) and a marginally perceptible colour shift with viewing angle up to ±75°. The double-sided PEP effect is readily integrated with other established lifetime-extending technologies, allowing for a multiplicative increase in lifetime. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a deep blue PHOLED that shows stability comparable to green PHOLEDs, accelerating the use of the deep blue phosphorescent emitters in power-efficient displays and lighting. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Limited 2025.

Microscale fiber-integrated vector magnetometer with on-tip field biasing using N-V ensembles in diamond microcrystals

In quantum sensing of magnetic fields, ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond offer high sensitivity, high bandwidth and outstanding spatial resolution while operating in harsh environments. Moreover, the orientation of defect centers along four crystal axes forms an intrinsic coordinate system, enabling vector magnetometry within a single diamond crystal. While most vector magnetometers rely on a known bias magnetic field for full recovery of three-dimensional (3D) field information, employing external 3D Helmholtz coils or permanent magnets results in bulky, laboratory-bound setups, impeding miniaturization of the device. Here, a novel approach is presented that utilizes a fiber-integrated microscale coil at the fiber tip to generate a localized uniaxial magnetic field. The same fiber-tip coil is used in parallel for spin control by combining dc and microwave signals in a bias tee. To implement vector magnetometry using a uniaxial bias field, the orientation of the diamond crystal is preselected and then fully characterized by rotating a static magnetic field in three planes of rotation. The measurement of vector magnetic fields in the full solid angle is demonstrated with a shot-noise-limited sensitivity of 19.4nT/Hz1/2 and microscale spatial resolution while achieving a fiber sensor head cross section of less than 1mm2.
