Along with variant advantages, cloud storage also poses new security challenges. Potential users are reluctant to move important and sensitive data to cloud unless security challenges have been well addressed. This paper reports our on-going efforts to address three data security issues in cloud storage: repudiation, fairness, and roll-back attacks. We proposed a novel fair multi-party non-repudiation (MPNR) protocol, which provide a fair non-repudiation storage cloud and is capable of preventing roll-back attacks. © 2011 IEEE.

Online discussion forums are a valuable means for users to resolve specific information needs, both interactively for the participants and statically for users who search/browse over historical thread data. However, the complex structure of forum threads can make it difficult for users to extract relevant information. The discourse structure of web forum threads, in the form of labelled dependency relationships between posts, has the potential to greatly improve information access over web forum archives. In this paper, we present the task of parsing user forum threads to determine the labelled dependencies between posts. Three methods, including a dependency parsing approach, are proposed to jointly classify the links (relationships) between posts and the dialogue act (type) of each link. The proposed methods significantly surpass an informed baseline. We also experiment with "in situ" classification of evolving threads, and establish that our best methods are able to perform equivalently well over partial threads as complete threads. © 2011 Association for Computational Linguistics.

It is well recognized that in biometric systems feature extraction and representation are key considerations. Among various feature extraction and representation schemes, coding-based methods are most attractive because they have the merits of high accuracy, robustness, compactness and high matching speed, and thus they have been adopted in many different kinds of biometric systems, such as iris, palmprint, and finger-knuckle-print (FKP) systems. However, how to devise a good coding scheme for FKP recognition is still an open issue. In this paper, based on the finding that Riesz transforms can well characterize the visual patterns, we propose to encode the local patches of an FKP image by using 2nd-order Riesz transforms. Specifically, we propose a 6-bits coding scheme, namely RieszCompCode, which consists of 6 bit-planes. In RieszCompCode, three of the bitplanes are obtained by binarizing the image's responses to the three 2nd-order Riesz transforms, and the other three ones are from the classical CompCode scheme. Experiments conducted on the benchmark PolyU FKP database corroborate that the proposed RieszComopCode can surpass all the other coding schemes evaluated for FKP verification in terms of verification accuracy. © 2011 IEEE.

Sensors in a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) are prone to failure, due to energy depletion, hardware failures, etc. Fault tolerance is one of the critical issues in WSNs. The existing fault tolerant mechanisms either consume significant extra energy to detect and recover from the failures or need to use additional hardware and software resource. In this paper, we propose a novel energy-aware fault tolerance mechanism for WSN, called Informer Homed Routing (IHR). In our IHR, the non cluster head nodes limit and select the target of their data transmission. Therefore, it consumes less energy. Our experiments show that our proposed protocol can dramatically reduce energy consumption, compared to two existing protocols, LEACH and DHR. © 2011 IEEE.

Internet of Things (IoT) refers to the networked interconnection of everyday objects. IoT is an upcoming research field and is being regarded as the revolution in the world of communication because of its extensible applications in numerous fields. Due to open and self-assimilation nature of these networks they are highly prone to attacks. Because of this reason security is of primary concern here. The security attack can be of various types, the idea here is to prevent IoT networks from Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attack. The objective of Denial of Service (DoS) is to make the server resources unavailable to the intended user, and when several such DoS attacks are present in a network then the attack is known as a DDoS attack. Our strategy is to prevent DDoS attack in IoT networks by using Learning Automata (LA) concepts. In this paper, we present a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) which is used as a system model for IoT here. SOA provides a platform to the developers using which they can develop various applications for IoT without any concern regarding the nature of the objects, thereby acting as a middleware. The DDoS prevention strategy has been targeted for the SOA based architecture for IoT. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme is effective in preventing DDoS attacks in IoT. © 2011 IEEE.

With the emergence of computers in every day activities and with the ever-growing complexity of networks and network communication protocols, covert channels are becoming an eminent threat to the confidentiality of information. We propose a technique to detect confidential information leakage via covert channels. The proposed technique is based on relational algebra. It provides tests to verify the existence of a leakage of information via a monitored covert channel. The technique also provides computations which show how the information was leaked if a leakage exists. Our focus is limited to protocol-based covert channels and instances where the users of covert channels modulate the information that is being sent;either by encryption, or some other form of encoding. We discuss possible applications of the proposed technique in digital forensics and cryptanalysis. We also report on a prototype tool that allows for the automation of the proposed technique. The code dissemination in sensor networks is a useful technology to update a new code or change the functionality or bugs of the existing code. However, sensor networks are susceptible to various attacks because they are deployed in open and unprotected environments. It is necessary to use effective mechanisms to protect sensor nodes against attacks. In this paper, we propose a secure code dissemination mechanism over the energy-efficient minimum virtual backbone reducing the number of broadcasting packets using RSSI (Received Signal Strength Indicator) values. Our mechanism considers all security requirements such as the confidentiality, the integrity and the authentication to defend the battery exhaustion attack, the DoS attacks, the routing attacks, etc. during the code dissemination. We evaluated the performance of our method via simulations using QualNet, a kind of simulation tools. Simulation results show that our proposed mechanism significantly reduces the number of transmitted messages, the energy consumption and the computation overhead for the secure code dissemination in comparison to other existing secure code disseminations. © 2011 IEEE.

In order to satisfy the development of contemporary higher education better, after analyzing different experimental methods, this paper proposes a new idea to combine real laboratory equipments and virtual simulation system for building the remote experimental platform. The dynamical network topology is the source of most challenges in VANETs (Vehicle Ad hoc Networks). In urban area, however, it is feasible to meet the challenge by taking advantage of the heavy traffic. This paper proposes a location aware virtual infrastructure (LAVI) based on recognition memory. Combining the memory of past cooperation with the location information, the mobile nodes can construct cooperative groups with recognized peers and in turn to provide a virtual infrastructure. © 2011 IEEE.

During software testing, defect prediction approaches measure current reliability status, forecasting future program failures, and provide information on how many defects need to be removed before shipping. Existing approaches often require faults to be detected and identified as a new one, before a model-based trend can be fitted. While during regression testing failures may frequently occur, it is not evident which are related to new faults. Consequently, reliability growth trending can only be performed in sync with fault identification and repair, which is often performed in between regression test cycles. In this paper we present a dynamic, reasoning approach to estimate the number of defects in the system early in the process of regression testing. Our approach, coined Dracon, is based on Bayesian fault diagnosis over abstractions of program traces (also known as program spectra). Experimental results show that Dracon systematically estimates the exact number of (injected) defects, provided sufficient tests cases are available. Furthermore, we also propose a simple, analytic performance model to assess the influence of failed test cases in the estimation. We observe that our empirical findings are in agreement with the model. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.
