One characteristic of non-volatile memory (NVM) is that, even though it supports non-volatility, its retention capability is limited. To handle this issue, previous studies have focused on refreshing or advanced error correction code (ECC). In this paper, we take a different approach that makes use of the limited retention capability to our advantage. Specifically, we employ NVM as a file cache and devise a new scheme called amnesic cache management (ACM). The scheme is motivated by our observation that most data in a cache are evicted within a short time period after they have been entered into the cache, implying that they can be written with the relaxed retention capability. This retention relaxation can enhance the overall cache performance in terms of latency and energy since the data retention capability is proportional to the write latency. In addition, to prevent the retention relaxation from degrading the hit ratio, we estimate the future reference intervals based on the inter-reference gap (IRG) model and manage data adaptively. Experimental results with real-world workloads show that our scheme can reduce write latency by up to 40% (30% on average) and save energy consumption by up to 49% (37% on average) compared with the conventional LRU based cache management scheme.

Defect prediction models presented in the literature lack generalization unless the original study can be replicated using new datasets and in different organizational settings. Practitioners can also benefit from replicating studies in their own environment by gaining insights and comparing their findings with those reported. In this work, we replicated an earlier study in order to investigate the merits of organizational metrics in building defect prediction models for large-scale enterprise software. We mined the organizational, code complexity, code churn and pre-release bug metrics of that large scale software and built defect prediction models for each metric set. In the original study, organizational metrics were found to achieve the highest performance. In our case, models based on organizational metrics performed better than models based on churn metrics but were outperformed by pre-release metric models. Further, we verified four individual organizational metrics as indicators for defects. We conclude that the performance of different metric sets in building defect prediction models depends on the project's characteristics and the targeted prediction level. Our replication of earlier research enabled assessing the validity and limitations of organizational metrics in a different context.

Reversible logic transforms logic signal in a way that allows the original input signals to be recovered from the produced outputs, has attracted great attention because of its application in many areas. Traditional silicon computers consume much more power compared to computing systems based on Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA). In addition, DNA-based logic gates are stable and reusable. In this paper, we propose a new approach for designing DNA-based reversible adder/subtractor circuit;it's possible to perform addition and subtraction operations using single circuit representation. We first merge the properties of addition and subtraction operations. Then, we demonstrate reversible DNA-based addition and subtraction operations. Our proposed DNA-based reversible addition/subtraction circuit is faster than the conventional one due to parallelism and replication properties of DNA strands. It also requires less space because of compactness of DNA strands. In addition, the DNA-based adder/subtractor circuit needs low power as the formation of DNAs consumes a small amount of energy. Finally, the comparative results show that the proposed DNA-based system requires m+3.2n DNA signals, but in existing system, it requires m.2n, where m is the size of extra tags and n is the total number of bits. Besides, the run time complexity of proposed system has O(1) while the existing system has O(mln2n). © 2014 IEEE.

Recent advances in neuroscience have shown that the neuropathological disorders are closely related with diseases such as Alzheimer's. Those damages are particularly associated with the intermediate visual perceptual processing which can cause the motion perception defects and abnormal visuo-spatial functions in daily living of patients. In this paper, we propose a virtual reality based assessment tools for measuring human perceptual sensitivity to dynamic erroneous motions, particularly designed to assess possible early stage of brain damages and its associated visual dysfunctions. The proposed method contains multiple assessment layers to check the awareness of erroneous motion in natural scenes at various severities. Our VR based game type environment provides an effective test bed for various dynamic motion based perceptual sensitivity experiments. Our initial human subject tests show that game based test environment produces more coherent and consistent data, preferable to survey based methods. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2014.

Cloud computing has become indispensable in providing highly reliable data services to users. But, there are major concerns about the privacy of the data stored on cloud servers. While encryption of data provides sufficient protection, it is challenging to support rich querying functionality, such as string matching, over the encrypted data. In this work, we present the first ever symmetric key based approach to support privacy preserving string matching in cloud computing. We describe an efficient and accurate indexing structure, the PASS tree, which can execute a string pattern query in logarithmic time complexity over a set of data items. The PASS tree provides strong privacy guarantees against attacks from a semi-honest adversary. We have comprehensively evaluated our scheme over large real-life data, such as Wikipedia and Enron documents, containing up to 100000 keywords, and show that our algorithms achieve pattern search in less than a few milliseconds with 100% accuracy. Furthermore, we also describe a relevance ranking algorithm to return the most relevant documents to the user based on the pattern query. Our ranking algorithm achieves 90%+ above precision in ranking the returned documents.

Features that are widely used in digital image analysis and pattern recognition tasks are from three main categories: shape, intensity, and texture invariant features. For computer-aided diagnosis in medical imaging for many specific types of medical problem, the most effective choice of a subset of these features through feature selection is still an open problem. In this work, we consider the problem of white blood cell (leukocyte) recognition into their five primary types: Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Eosinophils, Monocytes and Basophils using a Support Vector Machine classifier. For features, we use four main intensity histogram calculations, set of 11 invariant moments, the relative area, co-occurrence and run-length matrices, dual tree complex wavelet transform, Haralick and Tamura features. Global sensitivity analysis using Sobol’s RS-HDMR which can deal with independent and dependent input variables is used to assess dominate discriminatory power and the reliability of feature models in presence of high dimensional input feature data to build an efficient feature selection. Both the numerical and empirical results of experiments are compared with forward sequential feature selection. Finally, the results obtained from the preliminary analysis of white blood cell classification are presented in confusion matrices and interpreted using Cohen’s kappa (κ) with the classification framework being validated with experiments conducted on poor quality white blood cell images. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

Image retrieval and computer vision rely heavily on noise removal and image hole padding to ensure the accurate rendering of images from depth cameras. Noise can undermine the accuracy of depth values, resulting in object occlusion and temporal variation in depth pixels. This paper proposes an efficacious approach to dealing with this problem based on an exemplar-based inpainting method for the removal of noise from object-removed images obtained using RGB-D cameras. The proposed method was also applied to the Tsukuba Stereo database, which provides 3D video with ground truth disparity maps. Experiment results were evaluated in terms of peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and computation time. Moreover, the self-recorded RGB-D depth images database was used to verify the corrections in spatial and temporal variation of depth values. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method by comparing the original occluded depth images with the images being processed.

Sustainability has emerged as a broad concern for society. Many engineering disciplines have been grappling with challenges in how we sustain technical, social and ecological systems. In the software engineering community, for example, maintainability has been a concern for a long time. But too often, these issues are treated in isolation from one another. Misperceptions among practitioners and research communities persist, rooted in a lack of coherent understanding of sustainability, and how it relates to software systems research and practice. This article presents a cross-disciplinary initiative to create a common ground and a point of reference for the global community of research and practice in software and sustainability, to be used for effectively communicating key issues, goals, values and principles of sustainability design for software-intensive *** centrepiece of this effort is the Karlskrona Manifesto for Sustainability Design, a vehicle for a much needed conversation about sustainability within and beyond the software community, and an articulation of the fundamental principles underpinning design choices that affect sustainability. We describe the motivation for developing this manifesto, including some considerations of the genre of the manifesto as well as the dynamics of its creation. We illustrate the collaborative reflective writing process and present the current edition of the manifesto itself. We assess immediate implications and applications of the articulated principles, compare these to current practice, and suggest future steps.

In this paper, we propose two parameterized frameworks, namely the Uniform Watchtower (UW) framework and the Hot zonebased Watchtower (HW) framework, for the evaluation of spatial queries on large road networks. The motivation of this research is twofold: (1) how to answer spatial queries efficiently on large road networks with massive POI data and (2) how to take advantage of social data in spatial query processing. In UW, the network traversal terminates once it acquires the Point of Interest (POI) distance information stored in watchtowers. In HW, by observing that users' movements often exhibit strong spatial patterns, we employ probabilistic clustering to model mobile user check-in data as a mixture of 2-dimensional Gaussian distributions to identify hot zones so that watchtowers can be deployed discriminatorily. Our analyses verify the superiority of HW over UW in terms of query response time. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Objective measures are favored and widely used by many researchers in evaluating the quality of noise-suppressed speech. A good and reliable objective measure should have property that it could evaluate speech quality in consistent and well correlated with subjective ratings. In this paper, several widely used objective measures are applied to the speech signals with the Chinese languages including Mandarin and Cantonese. The correlations between objective measure outputs and perceptual-subjective ratings are reported and analyzed. The experimental results show that the correlation with the language types of Mandarin and Cantonese are lower than the one with English and objective measures behave differently in Mandarin, Cantonese and English. Detail discussion and conclusion are presented as well.
