Parallel-channel flow mal-distribution and pressure-drop flow oscillations are two of the most severe dynamic instabilities for boiling flow especially in microchannel systems. This paper presents a framework for the transient analysis and active control of microchannel flow instabilities at a system-level view. A lumped two-phase flow system model is derived from the momentum balance equation to capture the characteristics of the microchannel heat exchangers. Bifurcations of flow distribution and inlet pressure can arise in parallel-channel two-phase flow systems. This paper investigates the control-theoretic properties with different control devices, including inlet valves and supply pump. Individual control valves at the inlet of each channel can be used to suppress both flow mal-distribution and flow oscillations effectively, although this scheme is subject to higher pressure loss and potential higher supply pumping power. Using the pump alone can only suppress pressure-drop flow oscillations, but not for flow mal-distribution in two identical parallel channels. However, we make an interesting observation that with different channel properties, we regain controllability from the pump and observability from a single channel flow rate measurement. © 2010 AACC.

In this paper, an optimized fractional order conditional integrator (OFOCI) is proposed. The key feature of this OFOCI is that, the fractional order α and the parameter κ for the "hold" value in the course of integration can be tuned following the analytical optimality design specifications, to achieve the optimized performance not achievable using integer order conditional integrators. The proposed optimality specifications are given to satisfy the desired phase delay, and minimize the preferred magnitude ratio, which can be calculated from the high order harmonic magnitudes divided by the magnitude of the fundamental wave. The numerical solution of calculating the optimized parameters α and κ of the OFOCI is introduced. The phase delays and magnitude ratios of four designed OFOCIs are compared with the integer order conditional integrators. Simulation results with the FFT spectra are also presented to validate the theoretical analysis. © 2010 AACC.

This paper focuses on the controllability of multi-agent systems with tree topology. The connection on controllability/uncontrollability between a single leader and multiple leaders is revealed, as well as the relationship between controllability and the common eigenvalues of components is analyzed. After that, a constructive approach is outlined to find out various uncontrollable subgraphs when the whole interconnection tree graph is uncontrollable, and a necessary and sufficient condition is presented for multi-agent controllability with tree topology. © 2010 AACC.

In this paper, we present an adaptive neuro-fuzzy controller design for a class of uncertain nonholonomic systems in the perturbed chained form with unknown virtual control coefficients and strong drift nonlinearities. The robust adaptive neuro-fuzzy control laws are developed using state scaling and backstepping. Semi-global uniform ultimate boundedness of all the signals in the closed-loop are guaranteed, and the system states are proven to converge to a small neighborhood of zero. The control performance of the closed-loop system is guaranteed by appropriately choosing the design parameters. By using fuzzy logic approximation, the proposed control is free of control singularity problem. An adaptive control based switching strategy is proposed to overcome the uncontrollability problem associated with x0(t0) = 0. © 2010 IEEE.

Shielding of buried three phase high voltage cables can be done by placing the cables in conducting ferromagnetic U-shaped gutters covered by plates. In case of a perfect electrical contact between adjacent gutters and between adjacent cover plates, the induced currents in the shield efficiently reduce the field generated in the vicinity of the cables. However, as a perfect contact cannot be guaranteed, it is useful to quantify the effect of a bad electrical contact on the shielding performance. From 2D FEM, 3D FEM and experiments, it is observed that a bad contact does not influence significantly the shielding if the axial length of the plates is relatively long compared to their other dimensions. © 2010 IEEE.

This paper deals with a possibility of non-destructive diagnostics of solid objects by software analysis of vibration spectrum by accelerometers. By a use of MATLAB platform, a processing and information evaluation from accelerometer is possible. Accelerometer is placed on the measured object. The analog signal needs to be digitized by a special I/O device to be processed offline with FFT (Fast Fourier Transformation). The power spectrum is then examined by developed evaluating procedures.

In developing nano-devices and nano-structures, traditional methodologies on MEMS meet the difficulty from the scale restriction. With the strategy of objects assembly, using AFM to handle nano-rods and other nano-objects is considered as an important and high potential technology in constructing nanostructures. However most of AFM only has one tip as the end effector and cannot control both translational and rotational motions during manipulation, this makes it be difficult to realize posture controllable manipulation especially in nano environment. In this paper, the behavior of nano-rod under pushing is theoretically analyzed and modeled. Viscous friction is incorporated in the model and the two situations that the pivot of the nanorod is either inside or outside the rod are addressed. By modeling, the pivot can be determined at each manipulation in real time, and the pushing points can be planned to realize posture controllable manipulation by using nano-hand strategy which is inspired by stable pushing theory of object manipulation in macro world, and to improve the reliability and the precision of manipulation. ©2010 IEEE.

This paper deals with the topic of qLPV state-space model based control design in which LMIs are used to optimize the multi-objective control performance. In this paper we investigate how the convex hull of the polytopic model influences the state value estimation of the LMI based control design. We examine these influences through the control design of the two dimensional aeroelastic system's example. First we define various TP type polytopic model representations of a wing section whose vertices define different convex hulls. In the second step we investigate how these models lead to different performances of the state value estimation.

In this paper, the problem of crossing the intersections is studied. A controller is designed based on a hybrid automaton. The design procedure is presented into two cases. The problem of crossing with one automatic car and one manual car from intersection is studied in case one. The safe crossing (i.e. fixing safe distance between two automatic car) of two automatic cars is studied in case two. Simulation is done by the model which is identified by the real data from the car Citroen C3. Simulation results show the efficiency of the controller in both cases. ©2010 IEEE.
