This paper presents practical experiences in an inverter-based microgrid installed at SEPIC research laboratory (Technical University of Catalonia, Spain). These experiences validate recent developments in the control of power electronics-based distributed generators which confirm the opportunity to provide auxiliary services for the utility grid. Harmonic rejection, voltage imbalance reduction, fault-ride through capability, and voltage and frequency regulation are some of the auxiliary services designed to improve the power quality of the future grid.
In this study, the vibration transmissibility of a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) with a linear damper having a configuration perpendicular to a linear vertical spring is analyzed using a nonlinear frequency analysis...

The feedback path (FBP) compensation has been a research topic in the field of active noise control (ANC) for decades and a number of offline and online FBP modeling techniques have been proposed in the literature. In this paper, a novel ANC system equipped with an online FBP modeling (FBPM) and neutralization (FBPMN) subsystem is proposed. The new system consists of three adaptive subsystems, namely 1) ANC controller with only two weights for each frequency target, 2) second-order adaptive IIR notch filter, and 3) an FBPMN filter. It yields very promising performance for narrowband noise signals generated by rotating machines such as fans, motors, large-scale strandcutters, etc. An auxiliary white Gaussian noise is injected into the ANC system to implement the FBPMN, which is scaled by a function of the residual noise to reduce its contribution to the residual noise power. Extensive simulations with synthetic/real secondary paths reveal that the proposed ANC scheme ensures excellent noise reduction performance as well as practically attractive computational efficiency.

In many of the marine applications, the availability of an accurate system to localize underwater targets using a group of surface vehicles equipped with acoustic sensors is of paramount importance. In this context, the surface vehicles must keep a well-defined formation with respect to the targets so as to maximize the range-based information available for target localization. In this paper, a target position estimation algorithm together with a simple formation control law to maintain an optimal configuration that maximizes range-related information for target localization and tracking are presented. The setup studied consists of a group of surface vehicles moving in formation and a target performing a predefined mission. The optimal formation is computed by maximizing the determinant of an appropriately defined Fisher information matrix (FIM), subject to inter-vehicle collision avoidance and vehicle manoeuvring constraints. A centralized approach for the formation control is considered, where the trajectory planning is carried out by a supervisor that computes the control actions for each agent. The formation control is complemented with a collision avoidance logic based on a discrete event law. Simulations show that this strategy leads to an interesting and well defined behavior of the formation for localization and tracking.

A formalized representation of cybernetic and physical components for cyber-physical systems (CPS) is proposed. It matches numerical procedures' design for operational reliability analysis of multi-component industrial systems. The reliability indices are supposed to be estimated for the systems subject to intensive industrial exploitation. The viability for CPS is executed through the artificial neural networks (ANN s) mathematical model application. For this purpose the next outputs of the integrated model CPS+ ANN are calculated: the equipment conflict rate factor, the information completeness factor, the reliability index and the operator activity coefficient which is an important indicator for the system's ability to function in a fully automatic mode. The ANNs tuning utilizes the information on the states of physical components and cybernetic components via accessible historical data and experts' knowledge treatment. A digital electrical substation (DSS) is discussed as a demonstration example of the CPS. The reviewed example allows one to clearly present the proposed approach and algorithm.

Global competition has resulted in changes on product demand which have to be managed by current manufacturing systems. In this context, modularity seems to be a suitable solution to provide manufacturing systems with the flexibility required to adapt to demand fluctuations when they occur, maintaining thus competitiveness and productivity. In concrete, machine modularity allows modifying a machine structure but it should be accomplished easily and rapidly. The current work proposes a model-driven methodology that allows modular machine definition and the automatic generation of the corresponding automation project, including the machine hardware configuration and its control software. It is based on the use of eXtensible Markup Language (XML) format and technologies for both model definition and code generation. The methodology has been implemented as a tool suite whose proof of concept has been developed for the particular case of the Siemens Totally Integrated Automation Portal (TIA Portal) PLC programming tool.
