control systems behavior can be analyzed taking into account a large number of parameters: performances, reliability, availability, security. Each control system presents various security vulnerabilities that affect in lower or higher measure its functioning. In this paper the authors present a method to assess the impact of security issues on the systems availability. A fuzzy model for estimating the availability of the system based on the security level and achieved availability coefficient (depending on MTBF and MTR) is developed and described. The results of the fuzzy inference system (FIS) are presented in the last section of the paper.

This work presents a failure recovery approach for foreseen failures of automated production systems to minimize the downtime of a system due to stoppages. In contrast to the common practice of implementing field control software, we suggest the use of operation states with pre- and postconditions. A set of operation states forms an operation state machine, whereby several operation state machines are used in a hierarchical manner in order to control and observe the process. The meta-model of the Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is extended to combine operation state machines with OMAC State Machines. By dividing the failure detection from the process controller the necessary flexibility is given to adapt this approach to different packaging machines.

Context-aware Recommender Systems aim to provide users with the most adequate recommendations for their current situation. However, an exact context obtained from a user could be too specific and may not have enough data for accurate rating prediction. This is known as the data sparsity problem. Moreover, often user preference representation depends on the domain or the specific recommendation approach used. Therefore, a big effort is required to change the method used. In this paper we present a new approach for contextual pre-filtering (i.e. using the current context to select a relevant subset of data). Our approach can be used with existing recommendation algorithms. It is based on two ontologies: Recommender System Context ontology, which represents the context, and Contextual Ontological User Profile ontology, which represents user preferences. We evaluated our approach through an offline study which showed that when used with well-known recommendation algorithms it can significantly improve the accuracy of prediction.

Generator protection misoperations may intensify a disturbance or even lead the power system to a major outage, especially when it occurs in a large power plant. Additionally, the power system expansion changes the short circuit currents and, thus, from time to time the system requires a re-evaluation of protection coordination. In this paper, Itaipu power plant's modeling, analysis and coordination evaluation of the protection functions performed due to scheduled technological update are presented. Lessons learned and undesirable situations concerning operation of large generators connected to large transmission systems observed during this process were used to propose a set of guidelines for overexcitation protection coordination evaluation for generators with the same type of configuration.

PFC (Predictive Function control) can be considered as a bridge between PI(D) and complex MPC. PI(D) control can have problems handling dead time and constraints. PFC handles these cases and is often better than using a Smith predictor. PFC is a simple realizable MPC which thus uses prediction and preview of key variables. PFC can be implemented via simple program code and thus has cheap license costs. The tutorial introduces the basic idea of PFC and algorithms for typical processes. Simulations illustrate its effectiveness and advantages over PI(D) and Smith predictors.

Computing methods for solving problems effectively are the essence of continual improvement in computer based learning. The aim of this article is to present a new computational approach in solving problems of an organization by stepwise computer assisted finding a reliable solution. The new approach that we propose is to use Kumar's algorithm for supremal controllable supervisor and pattern recognition to find the optimal solution. Having Euclidian plane geometry as an universal language, we will exemplify the new model by taking an example from it. By dividing the types of the problems in various categories we will try to find patterns and to use them for faster problem solving. © 2015 IEEE.

Currently there is no reliable mechanism available to allow continuous monitoring of all process conditions and leather characteristics inside the closed reactors during leather processing, so no real control. Conditions inside the reactors can only be monitored by stopping the reactor to sample the solution and leather. The automation systems for leather industry rely on stale centralised architecture, a critical point of failure imposing operational bottleneck. To improve the efficiency of leather manufacturing process the paper proposes a multi-agent system (MAS) architecture that is fault tolerant, and that provides high flexibility and agility needed by the turbulent environment of leather industry.

This study proposes model of the optimal motion planner and controller for multi mobile robots. The proposed controller is responsible for avoiding the collision among multi robots after generating the optimal trajectory in term of multi objective for each robot. This work includes two stages: the first is to generate multi objective optimal path and trajectory for each robot independently from the start to the goal position using the modified genetic algorithm (MGA) with A∗ search algorithm (A∗). The second one is to establish a movement strategy to let the robots navigate with avoiding collision risk with each other by introducing Sugeno first order fuzzy controller. Five objective functions have been proposed in this study for minimizing travelling length, time, smoothness, security and trajectory and reducing the energy consumption for each mobile robot by using Cubic Spline interpolation curve fitting for optimal planned path. The simulation results show that the multi mobile robots navigate successfully with avoiding static obstacles as well as avoiding the collision between each other. © 2015, IFAC (International Federation of automatic control) Hosting by Elsevier Ltd. Attitude estimation has a wide range of applications including aerial (UAVs for example), underwater (ROVs for instance), navigation systems, robotics, games, augmented reality system, industrial and so on. Extensive research over decades in this field resulted in a number of powerful estimators;complex like Kalman based algorithms as well as simple such as complementary filters & the kinds. For applications where computational simplicity is of prime concern, complementary filters have proven efficiency. This paper presents a comparative study of computationally simple algorithms naming Explicit Complementary Filter (ECF) and Gradient Descent based Complementary Filter (GDCF) along with computationally demanding extended Kalman filter-a de-facto standard for attitude estimation so far, regarding attitude estimation based on MEMS IMU. An alternative would be the variants of complementary filter;sufficiently efficient and simple scheme to avoid computational *** of these estimators is evaluated for Euler angle estimation using both simulated data from Matlab and experimental data from MPU6050 IMU. The assessment is based on the root mean square error computation for these algorithms. Moreover, the algorithms adjustable parameters were exploited for a range of values in the hunt for perfection. © 2015 SERSC.

Microgrids equipped with small-scale renewable-energy generation systems and energy storage units offer challenging opportunity from a control point of view. In fact, in order to improve resilience and enable islanded mode, microgrid energy management systems must dynamically manage controllable loads by considering not only matching energy generation and consumption, but also thermal comfort of the occupants. Thermal comfort, which is often neglected or oversimplified, plays a major role in dynamic demand response, especially in front of intermittent behavior of the renewable energy sources. This paper presents a novel control algorithm for joint demand response management and thermal comfort optimization in a microgrid composed of a block of buildings, a photovoltaic array, a wind turbine, and an energy storage unit. In order to address the large-scale nature of the problem, the proposed control strategy adopt a two-level supervisory strategy: at the lower level, each building employs a local controller that processes only local measurements;at the upper level, a centralized unit supervises and updates the three controllers with the aim of minimizing the aggregate energy cost and thermal discomfort of the microgrid. Comparisons with alternative strategies reveal that the proposed supervisory strategy efficiently manages the demand response so as to sensibly improve independence of the microgrid with respect to the main grid, and guarantees at the same time thermal comfort of the occupants.
