The problem of tracking a smooth time-varying reference trajectory for Thomson's ring is addressed from the perspective of Active Disturbance Rejection control (ADRC). The tracking controller is designed on the basis of the tangent linearization model of the nonlinear system around a constant equilibrium point. The large height deviations, outside the region of validity of the approximate linearization, trigger the effect of unknown nonlinearities and exogenous perturbations. These disturbances are properly on-line estimated and canceled with the help of a linear extended observer-linear controller based output feedback control scheme. Experimental results are presented which validate the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme.

This paper demonstrates that a droop controller, which is fundamental to the operation of power systems and now the parallel operation of inverters, is intrinsically the same as a phase-locked loop (PLL), which is widely adopted in modern electrical engineering. This bridges the gap between the two communities working on droop control and PLLs. As a result, droop controllers and PLLs can be improved and further developed via adopting the advancements in the other community. This also offers insightful understanding to power systems that have inverters and generators mixed together and leads to significant technological breakthrough for the grid connection of renewable energy. For example, there is no longer a need for grid-connected inverters to have a phase-locked loop and a droop controller at the same time.

This paper presents a comprehensive study on the wind power impact with increasing penetration on frequency stabilization in restructured power system scenario. The focus of the study is on faster and smoother settlement of frequency and tie-line power. A large penetration of wind power generation causes imbalance in power system because of its intermittent output. The wind power generation system does not provide inertia and isolates from the grid during disturbances but this possibility becomes milder if wind power generators also contribute to system inertia. The proposed control scheme with fuzzy logic uses frequency deviations to provide fast active power support, which blocks the fall in frequency and tie-line power during transient conditions. The simulation studies have been conducted in a two-area interconnected power system in restructured environment.

Differential power processing (DPP) isolated-port architecture with submodule integrated converters (subMICs) enables improved energy capture in photovoltaic (PV) power systems. This paper describes a control scheme for flyback subMICs operating in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). The duty-cycle is driven in proportion to a voltage error, with no further processing, thus eliminating the need to measure or to control the current explicitly. The approach is well suited for very simple, analog PWM controller implementation, but the resulting control loops become nonlinear. The system stability is demonstrated using the Lyapunov stability theorem. Experimentally measured module-level efficiency is greater than 95% for a 72-cell PV module having 3 substrings with solar irradiation of 80%, 60% and 40%, respectively.

The paper presents constraint satisfaction problem driven approach to analytical solution of the cyclic scheduling problem in the Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS) producing multi-type parts where for material handling are used the Automated Guide Vehicles Systems(AGVS). Finding the conditions guaranteeing the AGVs deadlock-free and collision-free movement policy is the aim of our researches. The AGVs co-sharing the common parts of the transportation route while executing repetitive processes, i.e. being assigned to AGVs passing along machines in a cyclic way, can be modeled in terms of Cyclic Concurrent Process Systems(CCPS). Schedulability analysis for a given CCPS answers the question whether a cyclic schedule exists or not. The paper suggests approach for schedulability analysis of multimodal processes representing real manufacturing employing the declarative modeling.

A study on filtering aspects of airborne wind energy generators is presented. This class of renewable energy systems aims to convert the aerodynamic forces generated by tethered wings into electricity. The reconstruction of the wing's position and velocity is investigated here. Different sensor setups are considered, and the related sensor fusion algorithms are presented. The different approaches are compared through experiments on a small-scale prototype. The designed filtering algorithms rely purely on kinematic laws, hence the results obtained are representative also of systems with larger size and different wing designs.

This paper presents two modern modulation techniques applied to three phase inverters from a hardware implementation point of view. The considered techniques are the sinusoidal pulse width modulation with zero sequence injection and the space vector modulation. Both these techniques conduct to the same result regarding supply voltage usage efficiency and harmonic content of the resulted signals. The implementation was developed in Matlab-Simulink, using the System Generator software, and validated through simulation. Both the modulation algorithms were implemented in hardware on a low cost FPGA, and the resulted designs are compared for resource usage efficiency, obtained speed and easiness of integration within a complex AC drive control system.
