The implementation and the achievement of a Process Simulator can replace a vast number of expensive system or function models. The simulation and automation of physical processes reduce the costs and the amount of time needed for deployment. The designed system can be used to simulate, project and train the programming of programmable logical control (PLC) systems graphically and practically. A vast number of masks (an applied mask corresponds to an assignment), showing model systems for different types of application and with different complexity factors, allow us to use the system for training and for practical work in different areas as: energy, transport, chemistry, construction etc. The designed simulator uses only a simulation block for all the application, having different replaceable masks according to the desired application. The Process Simulator uses an industrial programmable logical control.

In parallel it discusses strategies for encouraging more independent learning into the curriculum. Two main assumptions are made: (i) first that module design needs to embed regular student activity and (ii) student activity mostly involve more than engagement with what is covered in formal lectures. Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) is more efficient and produces significantly less NO x emissions compared to spark ignitions. Using an exhaust recompression strategy to achieve HCCI, however, produces cycle-to-cycle coupling which makes the problem of controlling combustion phasing more difficult. In the past, a linear feedback controller designed with a single linearized model is effective in controlling combustion phasing around an operating point. However, HCCI dynamics can change dramatically around different operating points such that a single linearization is insufficient to approximate the entire operating range. Further investigation shows that the operating range can be roughly divided into three regions where a linear model can capture the qualitative system behavior in each of the regions. As a result, a three zone switching linear model approximates recompression HCCI dynamics far better than a single linearization. This new model structure also suggests that two of the three regions need completely opposite control actions. Therefore, the approach of using a static feedback control based on a single linearziation cannot be appropriate over the entire operating range. We propose a switching controller based on the switching linear model and achieve very good performance in controlling HCCI combustion phasing throughout the entire operating region. Lastly, a semi-definite programming (SDP) formulation of finding a Lyapunov function for the switching linear model is presented in order to guarantee stability of the switching control scheme.

Environmental monitoring is one of the most classic applications of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). Itaipu hydroelectric dam creates a unique scenario for the develop ment of this type of WSN with more than 200 square kilometers of natural forests. In this context, FLORA project is aimed at developing a habitat monitoring WSN to be deployed in the Zoo of Itaipu and in the Tati Yupi Biological Refuge. The de ployment includes more that 50 nodes. The paper describes the two scenarios of this ambitious and challenging application and presents the routing and topology control protocol developed in the framework of FLORA. The protocol was designed to fulfil the requirements of the application, extend the lifetime of the network, and to adapt to continuous nodes deployment and potential failures. It is based in several protocols already reported in the literature. The novel proposal is a reliable and lightweight routing protocol for wireless sensor network based on vector distance, collection tree, and energy aware distance vector protocols. The main idea is that each node of the network finds the shortest path to the sink with the best link quality, in order to guarantee the delivery of data to the sink despite the dynamic and lossy nature of wireless transmissions. The functionality of this novel protocol is presented as well as the results based on a TinyOS implementation and traditional WSN nodes (motes) including a CC2420 radio.
