This paper presents a low cost, less computational pulse width modulation scheme for a modular multilevel converter (MMC). In the present control approach, the reference output voltage is generated by averaging the two nearest voltage levels. The switching states corresponding to the two nearest voltage levels and their duty cycles are obtained from the instantaneous value of reference output voltage. The proposed modulation scheme is easily extended to any number of submodules per arm without any modifications. In addition, a voltage balancing algorithm is proposed for the balancing of submodule capacitors voltage. The performance of the proposed modulation scheme and voltage balancing algorithm is evaluated on the 2MVA/6kV MMC system with three-level flying capacitor submodules. Also, the proposed modulation scheme is compared with the conventional phase-shifted carrier pulse width modulation (PSC-PWM) scheme and the results are presented.

As an important branch of computational photography, light field photography combines the hardware design of optical system with key algorithm of signal processing quite well. Unlike traditional photography which can only record light ray's two-dimensional position, light field photography system can record four-dimensional position and direction. Therefore, much more image information can be obtained from light field photography. With the development of 3D display technology, light field based autofocus and 3D display technology is becoming more and more popular. In this paper, a light field based new 3D reconstruction algorithm for buildings and office environment is proposed by applying Wavelet Transform and SVM (Support Vector Machine) model to obtain the image focusing quality assessment, along with the Mean Shift Algorithm and Random Field Model to get the dept. map of the scene. Firstly, light field image is captured by using a light field camera. Secondly, we use frequency domain digital refocus algorithm to manipulate light field image and obtain several serialized refocused images with different focus. Thirdly, wavelet features are extracted from each refocused image, and then an image focusing quality assessment is conducted by using RBF (Radial Basis Function) kernel based SVM model. Finally, we use Mean Shift algorithm to realize color clustering of the original light field image, and then build MRF (Markov Random Field) Model with color nodes. By iterating the likelihood dept. result obtained from real scenario dept. calibrations according to image focusing quality assessment, finally the dept. map of the scene is reconstructed. Experiments are conducted to prove the feasibility of the proposed 3D reconstructed algorithm based on light field. And the experimental results on real datasets demonstrate good performance of this algorithm.

This paper proposes a multi-objective optimization formulation to design a hybrid wind-photovoltaic-storage system to supply the demand. This design problem aims to minimize the annual cost of the overall system as well as the CO2 emissions, and is solved by Artificial Bee Colony (ABC) algorithm. Solar irradiation, wind speed, and load data are assumed deterministic. Prices are all empirical and components of hybrid system are commercially available. A test system in the Northwestern Iran is investigated. The presented technique yields the optimal number of system devices such that the economic and environmental profits are maximized. A fuzzy decision making (FDM) method is applied for finding the best compromise solution from the set of Pareto-optimal solutions obtained by ABC.

This paper presents a new seven-level voltage source converter (VSC) for high-power medium-voltage (MV) motor drives. The proposed topology is composed of H-bridge connection of two nested neutral-point-clamped (NNPC) converters called 7L-HNNPC converter. This converter has interesting features such as operating over a wide-range of output voltages particularly for a range of (10kV-15kV) without the need for connecting power semiconductor in series, high quality output voltage, less number of components in compare to other classical seven-level topologies. A novel SPWM technique has been developed for the proposed 7L-HNNPC converter to control and balance of the flying capacitors. The outstanding property of the control strategy is that the control can be applied independently to each leg of the converter that reduces the complexity of the controller significantly. The performance of the proposed converter is studied under different operating conditions in the MATLAB/Simulink environment. The feasibility of the proposed converter is evaluated experimentally on a scale-down prototype. © 2014 IEEE.

Real time in situ medical monitoring has become increasingly common in the past few decades, driven by the development of a wide variety of affordable sensors and power autonomous, energy efficient microcontroller platforms. Portable and unobtrusive multi-sensor data acquisition is considered routine, including real-time data processing and alerting based on measurements within or around the human body. Project MAIA has developed an intelligent baby cot system capable of monitoring sleeping infants and remotely notifying their carers under pre-programmed circumstances. It aims to add a layer of protection for infants during the first 6 months of their life, primarily targeting medical emergencies such as choking, suffocation and the elusive Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The MAIA system also aims to contribute to current paediatric medical knowledge by providing rare in situ research data. Copyright 2014 ACM.

Network-wide local unambiguous failure localization (NL-UFL) [1] has been demonstrated as an interesting scenario of monitoring trails (m-trails). It attempts to enable every node to autonomously localize any failure event in the network in a distributed and all-optical manner by inspecting a set of m-trails traversing through the node. This paper investigates the m-trail allocation problem under the NL-UFL scenario by taking each link and node failure event into consideration. Bound analysis is performed using combinatorial group testing (CGT) theory and this is followed by the introduction of a novel heuristic on general topologies. Extensive simulation is conducted to examine the proposed heuristic in terms of the required cover length and the number of m-trails to achieve NL-UFL. © 2014 IEEE.

Piezoelectric microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) resonators on Si can be a potential candidate to replace discrete L-C components in series resonant converters. In this paper, ring shaped piezoelectric (AlN) micro-resonators on Si are reported. Having vibration in contour mode, these resonators can achieve resonant frequency as low as 87.28 MHz. Recently, we have fabricated high Q (>1000) piezoelectric resonator using a CMOS compatible fabrication process, and experimental characteristics of these devices are included in this paper. Contour mode AlN MEMS resonator with moderately low resonant frequency and motional resistance has been reported for the first time (the resonant frequency and motional resistance of the fabricated device is 87.28 MHz and 36.728 μ respectively). Finally, an efficiency analysis of the series resonant topology has been performed using the equivalent electrical circuit model of the resonator. © 2014 IEEE.

A district heating grid is a hot water pipeline grid used to transmit waste heat from CHP (Combined Heat and Power) production plants to buildings, where it is used for service water and space heating. Currently, broad use of district heating is limited to Northern Europe and some regions in Central Europe, but the European Union Energy Efficiency Directive 2012/27/EU and Energy Performance of Buildings Directive 2010/31/EU drive the widespread adoption of this technology in member states. Further, these directives push the introduction of significant renewable local energy production into these grids, creating a need for a smart district heating grid that is in many ways analogous to the smart electric grid. One major difference is that in a hot water pipeline grid, there are significant delays in energy propagation, so algorithms developed for the smart electric grid are not directly applicable. In this paper, an auction based heat trade mechanism is proposed between an auctioneer agent representing the CHP plant operator and prosumer agents representing end users with local solar thermal generation capacity. A predictive simulation is used by an auctioneer to account for the said delays in energy production and to determine the market price that best satisfies the performance indicators defined by the CHP plant operator. The proposed multi-agent system is demonstrated by co-simulating it against a model of a part of a Finnish municipality's district heating grid.

In this paper, a new software tool is presented for the simulation of electrical networks under steady-state conditions. Its distinct advantage is the robust integration of distributed generation droop controls, while offering the ability to simulate extended networks fast and reliably. The proposed simulation tool is based on the combination of two well-known software products, namely MATLAB and OpenDSS. The latter is employed as an unbalanced power flow solver, whereas the former implements the droop control of DG units. Simulation results for a simple and extended low-voltage network show the effectiveness of the proposed tool and mainly the reduction in the execution times over other conventional time-domain-based software products.

This paper presents an application of an adaptive notch filter (ANF) for resonance suppression in industrial servo systems. An on-line frequency estimator is utilized for estimating the resonant frequency. The current command of the servo system is an input to the frequency estimator. The ANF automatically changes its notch frequency according to the estimated resonant frequency values and suppress the resonance. Experiments are performed using an industrial servo system with a belt-drive type load for various load conditions. Results show that the controller with the developed ANF identifies the changes in the resonant frequency well and therefore successfully suppresses the resonance. © 2014 Institute of Control, Robotics and Systems (ICROS).
