Using agents in virtual environments to assist controllers to manage multiple assets

Search and rescue operations often require complex coordination of a range of resources, including human and robotic resources. This paper discusses a proposed new framework that allows agent technology to be used in conjunction with a virtual environment to provide a human controller with an effective visualisation of the distribution of a collection of autonomous objects, in our case, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) so that they can be managed in a way that allows them to successfully complete the task in the minimum possible time. It is our contention that to do this effectively there needs to be two-way initiation of verbal conversations, but that it is not necessary for the system to completely understand the conversations required. An example scenario is presented that illustrates how such a system would be used in practice, illustrating how a single human can communicate with a swarm of semi-autonomous actors verbally and envisage their activities in a swarm based on the visual cues provided within the virtual environment. An agent-based solution is proposed that meets the requirements and provides a command station that can manage a search using a collection of UAVs effectively. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

This paper deals with the problem of designing a robust fault detection methodology for a class of input-output, uncertain dynamical distributed parameter systems, namely mechanical elastodynamic systems, which are representative of a whole class of problems related to on-line health monitoring of mechanical and civil engineering structures. The proposed approach does not require full state measurements and is robust to measuring, modeling and numerical errors, thanks to a time varying detection threshold. In order to avoid the problems associated with classical discretization techniques for distributed parameter systems, which can lead to numerical errors difficult to bound a priori, and thus higher thresholds, a suitable structure-preserving algebraic approach, called Cell Method, will be employed. This method consists in writing the equations of a distributed parameter system directly in discrete form, avoiding the usual discretization process and leading to a symplectic, that is energy preserving, numerical scheme.

This paper presents the age-group classification based on facial images. We perform agegroup classification by dividing ages into five age groups according to the lows of age growth. Features are extracted from face images through energy Active Appearance Model (AAM), which describe the shape and gray value variation of face images. Then, the faces are divided into small regions from which the LBP histograms are extracted and concatenated into a feature vector to be used as a face descriptor. Principle Component Analysis (PCA) is adopted to reduce the dimensions and Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier with Gaussian Radian Basis Function (RBF) kernel is trained. Experimental results demonstrate that energy AAM can improve the performance of age estimation. © Sila Science.

This paper proposes a delay compensation strategy for a distributed fault detection architecture, allowing to manage delays and packet losses in the communication network between the Local Fault Diagnosers. A novel consensus-based estimator with time-varying weights is introduced, permitting to improve detectability in the case of variables shared among more than one subsystem. In the consensus protocol, at each step each agent uses only the information given by the agent and the communication link which are more reliable at that time. The convergence of the proposed estimator is demonstrated and analytical conditions for detectability are derived.

Mathematical modeling of power electronic converters is a historical problem. Numerous efforts have been documented in literature to model different converter topologies and their control schemes since the 1940s. Traditional modeling approaches avoid transfer function derivation due to high degree of nonlinearity involved with the power converter's switched operation. In this paper, a simple transfer functions for a grid connected PV system is derived. First an ideal transfer function is derived from the steady state input and output relationship of ideal converters. Then, it is compared with the non-ideal model of a practical converter. Using this technique, it is possible to find generalized modules to represent a complex power converter, and it is possible to deduce new converter topologies using the reverse mapping.

We propose a novel model to mine and derive class-specific codebook for categorical object detection and classification. In particular, the codebook is built from a pool of heterogeneous local descriptors using an effective feature selection scheme. The resulting class-specific codebook strengthens the class discriminability by learning the most discriminative part codewords constructed from their preferable local descriptors. The advantage of our class-specific codebook comes from two aspects. 1). As we collect a variety of heterogeneous descriptors during the learning of local codebook, each target object class can always be represented by its most preferable descriptors. Moreover, even each part codeword can also find its suitable descriptors. 2). The feature selection process further picks out the most discriminative object parts that separate the target object class from background and other classes. Experimental results on several widely used datasets show that benefits from our class-specific object codebook which fuses complementary visual cues remarkably improve the detection and classification performance for both rigid and non-rigid articulated objects.

Recent PV faults and subsequent fire-hazards on April 5, 2009, in Bakersfield, California, and April 16, 2011, in Mount Holly, North Carolina provide evidence of a lack of knowledge among PV system manufacturers and installers about different PV faults. The conducted survey within the scope of this paper describes various faults in a PV plant, and explains the limitations of existing detection and suppression techniques. Different fault detection techniques proposed in literatures have been discussed and it was concluded that there is no universal fault detection technique that can detect and classify all faults in a PV system. Moreover, this digest proposes a transmission line model for PV panels that can be useful for interpreting faults in PV using different refelectomery methods.

This paper focuses on the improvement of the Petzval field curvature aberration that is induced by the lens curvature and refractive index. Most primary aberrations can be effectively corrected by using aspherical lens while the Petzval filed curvature regarded as intrinsic to an optical system cannot easy be corrected through the high order coefficient of aspherical lens. With the global optimization of the genetic algorithm (GA), this study applies the basic selection, crossover and mutation operator to optimize a group of lens curvatures and thicknesses so that not only the Petzval field curvature aberration is effectively improved but also the specification requirement is met in a projector system. © 2012 IEEE.

A non-interfering measurement technique has been proposed in this paper to identify aging in various components in a power converter circuit. Several power MOSFETs and IGBTs were aged in a controlled environment, and spread spectrum time domain reflectometry (SSTDR) technique was applied to these components to determine the associated level of electrical degradation while they were connected in an energized circuit. Multiple impedance matrices have been created based on the measured reflection across multiple node pairs of the circuit, and these reflections are the true representations of the impedance across those node pairs. Therefore, these matrices provide key information about the level of electrical degradation associated to the core power components in the power circuit, and it is possible to predict the remaining life of the power converter by using this impedance matrices.
