This paper describes the model reduction framework for single-input single-output (SISO) discrete-time systems based on the preservation parameters such as Markov properties of the original system by applying a Frequency-Limited Impulse Response Gramian based Balanced Truncation method. This proposed method extends the Frequency-Limited Impulse Response Gramians model reduction method for continuous systems described in the recent paper in [20] to be applicable for discrete time systems. A numerical example is provided to compare the performances between various frequency limited model reduction methods at an arbitrarily selected frequency range within the passband of a digital filter. The stability of the reduced order models are also checked for each scenario.

This paper presents design considerations of indoor and outdoor navigation techniques proposed for unmanned vehicles (UV). In this paper, we mainly investigate the use and the advantages of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) for indoor navigation, and Global Positioning System (GPS) for outdoor navigation. The system primarily uses laser range finder (LRF) measurements for indoor navigation, and is based on Extended Kalman Filter (EKF). For outdoor navigation the system uses Inertial Navigation System (INS) measurements. At periodical intervals the system integrates the measurements of an absolute sensor to improve estimations. The absolute sensor is a WSN interface for indoor navigation, and a GPS receiver for outdoor navigation. Simulation studies were conducted using Unified System for automation and Robot Simulation (USARSim) and Player/Stage. The results of USARSim based simulations prove the advantages of integrating GPS measurements. Player/Stage based simulations show the advantages of integrating Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) measurements obtained from WSN interfaces. In addition to the simulation studies, field tests with a custom-built Corobot autonomous robot platform will be realized to prove the effectiveness of the methods. © 2012 IEEE.

In this paper, a series resonant converter and a LED driver have been implemented by using a film bulk acoustic resonators (FBAR) in place of the inductor. This MEMS device can offer very high inductance density with excellent Q factor and can be conveniently fabricated in a CMOS compatible process. FBARs are smaller in size and weight compared to an inductor offering the same inductance per volume and quality factor, and therefore,, FBAR based power converters can offer higher power density. Simulation and experimental results with zero voltage switching (ZVS) and zero current switching (ZCS) have been provided to validate the use of FBARs in power converter circuits. The EMI of a discrete inductor based converter has been compared to that of an FBAR based converter, and the FBAR based converter showed better EMI performance. To the knowledge of the authors, the use of FBAR in power converter circuits has not been reported in the literature yet.

This paper presents a mobile robot aided self deploying wireless sensor network aiming to detect radiation leaks and to measure radiation levels, and explains design considerations to prolong network life. Special attention is given to the factors which are important for the specific requirements of radiation leak detection. Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) provide numerous benefits to applications with low duty cycle, such as environmental monitoring, event detection, etc. However, the realization of these potential benefits directly depends on energy efficient and reliable communication and coordination capabilities of the deployed system. In this study, challenges of WSNs, deployment strategies using mobile robots, and energy harvesting techniques to maximize lifetime of WSNs are discussed. Also, a comparison of two different exploration strategies is shown with the results of our own application developed in C#. Main contributions of this study are discussions on mobile robot aided WSN deployment strategies and energy harvesting techniques to maximize WSN lifetime. © 2012 IEEE.

Data clustering is a common technique for statistical data analysis, which is used in many fields, including machine learning and data mining. Clustering is grouping of a data set or more precisely, the partitioning of a data set into subsets (clusters), so that the data in each subset (ideally) share some common trait according to some defined distance measure. In this paper we present the genetically improved version of particle swarm optimization algorithm which is a population based heuristic search technique derived from the analysis of the particle swarm intelligence and the concepts of genetic algorithms (GA). The algorithm combines the concepts of PSO such as velocity and position update rules together with the concepts of GA such as selection, crossover and mutation. The performance of the above proposed algorithm is evaluated using some benchmark datasets from Machine Learning Repository. The performance of our method is better than k-means and PSO algorithm. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Data clustering groups data so that data which are similar to each other are in the same group and data which are dissimilar to each other are in different groups. Since generally clustering is a subjective activity, it is possible to get different clusterings of the same data depending on the need. This paper attempts to find the best clustering of the data by first carrying out feature selection and using only the selected features, for clustering. A PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization)has been used for clustering but feature selection has also been carried out simultaneously. The performance of the above proposed algorithm is evaluated on some benchmark data sets. The experimental results shows the proposed methodology outperforms the previous approaches such as basic PSO and Kmeans for the clustering problem. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

Nowadays, online and real-time pattern classification applications are required in many areas. Most classification algorithms are suitable only for off-line applications. Using the concept of evolving intelligent systems, this paper proposes an evolving fuzzy classifier capable of creating the rule base in online mode and real-time. The proposed evolving fuzzy classifier is based on a new clustering algorithm that consists of an improved version of the Evolving Clustering Method (ECM). Experiments with well-known benchmark classification problems indicated that the proposal is promising. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

The paper investigates a novel monitoring trail (m-trail) scenario that can enable any shared protection scheme for achieving all-optical and ultra-fast failure restoration. Given a set of working (W-LPs) and protection (P-LPs) lightpaths, we firstly define the neighborhood of a node, which is a set of links whose failure states should be known to the node in restoration of the corresponding W-LPs. A set of m-trails is routed such that each node can localize any failure in its neighborhood according to the ON-OFF status of the traversing m-trails. Bound analysis is performed on the minimum bandwidth required for the m-trails. Extensive simulation is conducted to verify the proposed scheme.

Recently issues about cyber-war have gained relevant attention, especially because of gravity of damages that could be caused by cyber attacks to strategic targets, mining security of citizens. Examples of targets might include national civil and military airports, command and control systems of civil and military transportation means electronic military systems for national defense, national infrastructures for water and electricity distribution, industries and also hospitals or firefighters informatics systems. The risk of cyber attacks for the mentioned systems and infrastructures has grown because of the introduction of general-purpose and open (not proprietary)communication protocols, widely interconnecting systems and services. With this regard, it is of great importance the problem of evaluating the impact that cyber attacks could generate and to select effective countermeasures to protect military and civil heterogeneous and interconnected systems. In this paper the Mixed Holistic Reductionist (MHR) model is proposed as a conceptual methodology to evaluate the impact of a set of cyber attacks to military and civil infrastructures of strategic interest. The reductionist approach allows modeling of heterogeneous systems using the simplest elements and then coming to assess the interaction of basic components. The holistic paradigm instead allows to analyze complex systems by evaluating their behavior in complex and thus as a monolithic unit. This model allows combining the holistic method with the reductionist, trying to maintain the benefits of both paradigms. The two methods are linked together through an additional layer which is an intermediate level of abstraction, usually represented by the services of any infrastructure. Services are defined as logical objects, in order to obtain useful functionality to the customer, or other infrastructure.
