Demand response (DR) programs can benefit electricity consumers, distribution network service providers (DNSPs), system operators and the energy market. However, the complexity and characteristics associated with loads connected to customer premises, utilisation of backup generators for DR and the baseline calculation process still require considerable research to optimise and further unlock the capabilities of DR programs. This paper analyses the barriers to using backup generators in medium voltage (MV) networks in DR programs. Two representative Australian MV networks (e.g., Urban-NSW1 network, Urban-VIC network) are analysed in DIgSILENT PowerFactory under different scenarios, such as variation in locations, power export limits, and dynamic export limits of backup generators. The study has found that a backup generator located at the end of the network can achieve better performance in supporting the network voltage. Moreover, the voltage limit and thermal limit of the power network mainly constrain the export limits of backup generators. Furthermore, a backup generator with a dynamic export limit can export 1 to 5 times more energy than the static export limit. © 2023 IEEE.

A novel signal denoising method is proposed based on variational mode decomposition (VMD) and Anderson-Darling statistics. The VMD method expands a signal into its frequency components, i.e., time series corresponding to a narrow range frequencies, termed intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) of the input signal. While initial IMFs contain most of the signal, the challenge remains the identification of these IMFs and presence of noise in the IMFs corresponding to signal. We propose to address this problem using the Anderson-Darling (AD) test. To that end, we compare the empirical distribution function (EDF) of the local coefficients of the VMD with the EDF of noise using AD statistics under the framework of goodness-of-fit (GoF) test. The coefficients exhibiting noise-like distribution are set to zero for noise removal. We demonstrate the effectiveness of proposed VMD-AD-GoF method using simulations on wide variety of signals. © 2024 IEEE.

The global prevalence of arm amputations, particularly transradial or below-elbow amputations, presents a pressing challenge due to the high costs of commercially available prosthetic hands. This issue is particularly acute in developing countries, where financial constraints hinder access to functional prosthetic solutions. Addressing this gap, this research introduces an innovative approach that merges electromyography (EMG) signal recognition and machine learning to develop an affordable and versatile bionic below-elbow prosthetic hand. The integration of EMG signals for control, coupled with machine learning algorithms, enables accurate classification of hand movements, resulting in enhanced movement precision and a broader range of gestures. This solution overcomes limitations in existing prosthetic hands, offering advanced EMG-based control and comprehensive movement capabilities, empowering users to perform intricate tasks and regain functional autonomy. The study undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the developed system's performance, encompassing hardware, software, and machine learning components. Results show promising accuracy levels for movement classification using the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) machine learning method. Execution time variations are observed among subjects and gestures, influenced by factors such as subject sensitivity and gesture complexity. Energy consumption analysis reveals disparities in power usage among different movements, emphasizing the impact of movement complexity on power requirements. A cost analysis demonstrates the affordability of the prototype, positioning it as a cost-effective alternative to existing prosthetic hand options. Comparing this solution to other research and commercial prosthetic hands highlights its uniqueness, particularly its emphasis on affordability. © 2023 Owner/Author.

This paper proposes a method enabling mobile LoRa gateways to support mobile end devices. The approach utilizes trilateration and similar approaches based on RSSI to estimate the position of end devices and specify the movement of the gateways to maintain contact. The evaluation of the proposed method tests various parameters such as speed and number of end devices, and it shows that it is able to retain contact even with speeds up to 12 mps. Moreover, the evaluation shows that the ADR-MIN algorithm performs better in this scenario than the default ADR. © 2024 IEEE.

In this paper, we have utilized deep learning approaches to detect cloud intrusion for the Internet of Things (IoT). The emerging growth of IoT and cloud environments has revolutionized many industries by allowing real-time data sharing and storage. Cloud platforms offer the essential infrastructure for managing the massive volumes of data produced by IoT devices. However, due to several flaws, including insufficient encryption, insecure APIs, and weak authentication, intruders can exploit the vulnerabilities to interrupt services and obtain unauthorized access. Therefore, deep learning can be an effective solution to detect cloud intrusion in IoT. In this research, we have developed individual convolutional neural network (CNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM) models, along with a hybrid CNN-LSTM model for multiclass classification and binary classification to detect cloud intrusion. In addition, we have examined which models perform the best for cloud intrusion detection for IoT among the individual and hybrid models. The proposed models are effective in detecting cloud intrusion, as CNN can extract spatial features, and LSTM can capture temporal dependencies from network traffic data. Furthermore, we have utilized one of the most recent and comprehensive datasets for IoT, the ToN-IoT dataset, containing real-world data. In multiclass classification, the hybrid CNN-LSTM has given the best performance, achieving an accuracy of 97.65%, precision of 97.72%, recall of 97.65%, f1 score of 97.67%, and AUC of 99.93%. In binary classification, all CNN, LSTM, and hybrid CNN-LSTM have demonstrated high performance, where LSTM has achieved the highest accuracy of 99.97%. Moreover, we have evaluated the performance of multiclass classification for detecting nine distinct kinds of attacks. In this instance, CNN has shown better performance in detecting backdoor attacks. Thus, this research can make the IoT platform more secure by efficiently detecting cloud intrusion. © 2025

Telecom carriers have announced new content services by making a partnership with content providers and offered popular video streaming to customers. Via the integration with edge networks, telecom carriers can procure various contents from content providers and place them on edge servers proximate to end users to serve real-time requests with high bandwidth and ultra-low latency. Nevertheless, it is challenging to consider the content procurement, placement, and services jointly due to the user preference, user distribution, storage capacity of edge server, economic costs, etc. Telecom carriers would like to balance the procuring, placing, and transfer costs. To address this problem, the paper formulates an optimization problem and then proposes an approximation algorithm. Finally, the simulation results manifest that our algorithm outperforms other baselines. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper aims to investigate a system that uses various machine-learning algorithms to predict symptoms and deep-learning techniques for image processing that leads to early disease prediction, an essential aspect of today's healthcare industry. The main objective of this system is to enable both the healthcare professionals and the patients to interpret the results at a faster rate. Existing systems provide results based on only symptoms which is not very effective in real-time but our system works well with both symptoms and image-based specifications. This investigation explores several algorithms like Random Forest, Decision tree, XGBoost, Logistic regression, Long-term short memory (LSTM), and Naïve Bayes for symptom-based prediction [14]. CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) deep learning techniques, notably DenseNet121, are used for image processing. The use of image processing bridges the gap between the user who feels symptom-based prediction to be a bit difficult. Furthermore, diverse experiments are done on multiple datasets to establish more accurate results. This system also ensures the safeguarding of sensitive information. The proposed disease prediction system helps empower healthcare professionals and individuals with proactive insights into potential health risks by giving accurate predictions for early intervention of the disease. © 2024 IEEE.

This paper introduces an innovative approach to Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) for video question answering (VideoQA) through the development of an adaptive chunking methodology and the creation of a bilingual educational dataset. Our proposed adaptive chunking technique, powered by CLIP embeddings and SSIM scores, identifies meaningful transitions in video content by segmenting educational videos into semantically coherent chunks. This methodology optimizes the processing of slide-based lectures, ensuring efficient integration of visual and textual modalities for downstream RAG tasks. To support this work, we gathered a bilingual dataset comprising Persian and English mid- to long-duration academic videos, curated to reflect diverse topics, teaching styles, and multilingual content. Each video is enriched with synthetic question-answer pairs designed to challenge pure large language models (LLMs) and underscore the necessity of retrieval-augmented systems. The evaluation compares our CLIP-SSIM-based chunking approach against conventional video slicing methods, demonstrating significant improvements across RAGAS metrics, including Answer Relevance, Context Relevance, and Faithfulness. Furthermore, our findings reveal that the multimodal image-text retrieval scenario achieves the best overall performance, emphasizing the importance of integrating complementary modalities. This research establishes a robust framework for video RAG pipelines, expanding the capabilities of multimodal AI systems for educational content analysis and retrieval. © 2025 IEEE.

When integrated, blockchain technology and cloud computing (EC) may improve security and protect data. However, when data is sent to EC, the Internet of Things (IoT) device layer cannot guarantee data security. As a result, in the IoT ecosystem, end users and IoT devices are susceptible to assaults. Additionally, as the number of IoT devices rises and generates a large quantity of data, especially in mobile IoT devices, security concerns rise dramatically. High security and privacy standards are necessary for industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) applications in order to safeguard data and guarantee that IoT devices may seamlessly switch to another network. By utilising its decentralised structure, consensus process, and encryption features, blockchain technology can offer a solution. However, because IIoT devices have limited resources, the encryption procedure might be complicated. Actually, in order to secure communication between IIoT devices and EC, this research suggests a new security mechanism built on blockchain technology. Additionally, two security tiers will be used by the Elastic Blockchain Security Solution (EBC) to create a dynamic system for mobile IIoT devices. To evaluate the EBC solution's effectiveness, scalability, and performance, as well as its consensus method and encryption capabilities, it was put into practice and tested in a number of scenarios © 2024 IEEE.

In a convolutional neural network (CNN), the output is produced by passing the input through an activation function (AF). The traditional AFs like sigmoid and tanh suffer from disappearing gradient problems. The disappearing gradient issue was solved by the ReLU AF, but the negative region issue still exists. This study introduces a non-monotonic, nonlinear AF dubbed the Linear Irrational Unit (LIU). The function is continuously differentiable in both the positive and negative regions, which overcomes the disappearing gradient problem. As the proposed function has a non-zero value in the negative region, it does not suffer from the negative region problem. The effectiveness of the proposed LIU activation function was assessed using MNIST, CIFAR-10 and Chest X-ray datasets. With our proposed CNN model, the LIU activation function can reach an accuracy of 85.26% on the Chest X-ray dataset, 99.52% on the MNIST dataset, and 83.15% on the CIFAR dataset, which is better than the performance of other modern activation functions. © 2024 IEEE.
