Three dimensional integration technology introduces new complexities to design and particularly codesign. Additional complexity is added when one considers that the design needs to be "future-proof". How do you ensure that the 3D chip stack will work for future chips within the stack, whose parameters are yet to be fully anticipated. This paper proposes that this be managed through an Interface IP approach Design blocks with associated properties that not only supports signaling and power delivery but also constraints that must be managed between chips both during design but also in-situ and as part of physical verification. © 2011 IEEE.

In this paper, we present our effort in developing an open-source GPU (graphics processing units) code library for the MATLAB Image Processing Toolbox (IPT). We ported a dozen of representative functions from IPT and based on their inherent characteristics, we grouped these functions into four categories: data independent, data sharing, algorithm dependent and data dependent. For each category, we present a detailed case study, which reveals interesting insights on how to efficiently optimize the code for GPUs and highlight performance-critical hardware features, some of which have not been well explored in existing literature. Our results show drastic speedups for the functions in the data-independent or data-sharing category by leveraging hardware support judiciously;and moderate speedups for those in the algorithm-dependent category by careful algorithm selection and parallelization. For the functions in the last category, fine-grain synchronization and data-dependency requirements are the main obstacles to an efficient implementation on GPUs. Copyright© 2010 ACM.

Social network services are becoming increasingly popular, and people are using these networks to obtain and share information. The application of social network and social media to the collection, storage and review of personal information presents opportunities for improved personal health management. This paper presents a survey of the literature on the models for the use of online social networks and models for health behavior change. These are then combined to present a framework for health behavior change through social media. This framework is then used to develop a prototype for the system design.

Human Endogenous RetroViruses(HERVs) are suggested that they have a function of regulating the activity of human genes and could produce protein in some conditions. So it is crucial to examine the physical layout relationship between HERVs and genes in the whole genome scale. In this paper we present RetroScope, a new Web-based comparative visualization system for HERV over 4 whole primate genomes including Human, Chimpanzee, Orangutan and Rhesus monkey. So RetroScope enables us to find the retro element which is very close to a specified gene in the form of exonoverlapping or promotor, primer overlapping. Thus our system enables biologist to provide global understanding by comparing the linear configuration of several HERVs in the whole chromosome scales by using a fast HERV alignment algorithm. Also by alignment of HERVs, we can find the most similar pair of chromosomes with respect to the configuration of HERV elements, which would be another clues to construct phylogenetics based on HERV. Short internet-based chat is typical of modern communication, especially for on-line game players. Improved chat tools are available to avatar agents in virtual space (e.g., Second Life) thanks to the fast-evolving 3D internet. The most common plain text chat is easy to use, but it is hard to understand who talks to whom. Advanced chat with 2D word balloons in 3D virtual space is difficult or unfamiliar, since it does not consider real world constraints. We propose a human-cognition based chat system for virtual avatars using geometric information. In our chat framework, if an agent (avatar) wants to talk with other people, then that agent should approach within an "audible distance" to read the text, as would be required in the real world to participate in a conversation. Additionally we propose a new model to manage the virtual chat social network over our cognition-based chatting system. Our experiment showed that the number of chat agents is saturated regardless of the number of chat agents, as occurs in real-world chat. Thus, the social-graph for chat agents is always of a manageable size in our cognition-based chat system. © 2008 ACM.

We propose AVACHAT, a new comic-stylized communication interface for avatar agents. We show that the 3-D word balloon could be successfully exploited to depict chat dialogues and the atmosphere of groups talking, such as cheerful laughing or loud quarrelling without adding any multimedia functions. Finally, we propose a new data structure to manage the chat dialogues among virtual avatars. It can be used to reconstruct the social-graph for chat agents in a virtual world. Copyright 2008 ACM.

Determining the influence of an object on other objects in a database, based on proximity, is important in many applications. Abstractly, we wish to pre-process a set, P, of points in d-space so that the points of P that are assigned a new query point q as a Euclidean nearest neighbor can be reported quickly. These are the reverse nearest neighbors of q and are the ones most influenced by q. This generalizes to bichromatic reverse nearest neighbors, in which two sets, clients and servers, are given, where each client is influenced by some server, and of interest are the clients that are assigned a new server q as a nearest neighbor. Both extend to higher orders k > 1, where we seek the points that are assigned q as one of their k nearest neighbors, indicating varying degrees of influence. Each version also has a counterpart where "nearest" is replaced by "farthest", signifying low influence. We present a general approach that solves such reverse proximity query problems in an efficient and unified way, in any dimension, using well-known geometric transformations. We also give simple approximation algorithms in two and three dimensions (the primary domain of GIS applications) that report points that are "close to"being the desired true reverse proximity neighbors, as determined by a user-specified error parameter. This is based on approximating the proximity loci of the points by suitable convex polytopes that are amenable to simple and efficient querying. Theoretical analyses show that our solutions are fast and provably accurate, and this is further confirmed by experiments. Copyright 2008 ACM.

As CMOS feature size scales down to 65nm and below, challenges for device and circuit manufacturability are emerging. As commonly seen in real designs, devices with distorted gate shapes and rough line-edges are manufactured despite the applications of aggressive resolution enhancement techniques (RET). It has been shown that such irregular gates could introduce significant extra leakage current. Existing tools and device models cannot handle non-rectangular geometries. Therefore, it is critical that a modeling flow capable of handling such irregular devices is developed and smoothly integrated into the post-lithography delay and leakage circuit analysis process. Previously proposed methods either model an irregular transistor as two different rectangular devices, one for on and the other for off state analyses;or they are difficult to be implemented. In this paper, we propose a new modeling approach that serves as a fast and simple solution to this problem and overcomes these drawbacks. We found that by adjusting both gate length and width of the equivalent device, a single equivalent rectangular device can be determined. Through TCAD and SPICE simulation experiments, we demonstrate that our model can accurately capture both on and off currents of the modeled nonrectangular gate device. The average error of our modeling approach is 1.6% for Ion and 7.5% for I off. © 2008 SPIE.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic and crippling disease affecting an increasing number of people each year. With no known cure, it is expected to reach epidemic proportions in the near future. Accurate segmentation of knee cartilage from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans facilitates the measurement of cartilage volume present in a patient's knee, thus enabling medical clinicians to detect the onset of osteoarthritis and also crucially, to study its effects. This paper compares four model-based segmentation methods popular for medical data segmentation, namely Active Shape Models (ASM) (Cootes et al., 1995), Active Appearance Models (AAM) (Cootes et al., 2001), Patch-based Active Appearance Models (PAAM) (Faggian et al., 2006), and Active Feature Models (AFM) (Langs et al., 2006). A comprehensive analysis of how accurately these methods segment human tibial cartilage is presented. The results obtained were benchmarked against the current "gold standard" (cartilage segmented manually by trained clinicians) and indicate that modeling local texture features around each landmark provides the best results for segmenting human tibial cartilage.

In this paper, we propose a novel architecture for a reconfigurable Networks on Chip (NoC)-based platform called OperaNP. In this platform, Intellectual Property (IP) cores can be embedded on an array of programmable logic blocks while the data routing is done using another array of configurable routers. A programmable switch fabric is designed to connect the IP cores to the routers to build any desired network topology. This new design addresses the fixed topology problem in other platforms and the problem of updating the running system with new IP cores without shutting down or restarting the system. This paper introduces basic ideas behind the OperaNP project, surveys the work done in this area, and explores the art of research when designing NoC-based platform. ©2007 IEEE.
