MESSI: Task Mapping and Scheduling Strategy for FPGA-based Heterogeneous Real-Time systems

Continuous demands for improved performance within constrained resource budgets are driving a move from homogeneous to heterogeneous processing platforms for the implementation of today's Real-Time (RT) embedded systems. The applications executing on such systems are typically represented as a Precedence Task Graph (PTG), where a node represents a task or algorithm for one functionality and edges represent the complex interactions between multiple functionalities. Due to RT constraints, the task graph needs to be executed within a specified deadline. Although some existing studies have looked into solving this challenge, comprehensive studies that combine the theoretical features of RT task-graph mapping and scheduling with practical runtime architectural characteristics have mostly been ignored to date. Hence, in this article, we consider the challenge of scheduling an RT application modeled as a single PTG, with the objective of minimizing the overall execution time under Hardware (HW) resource and deadline constraints for heterogeneous Central Processing Unit (CPU) + Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) architectures. First, we introduce an optimal solution using Integer Linear Programming (ILP). However, this ILP-based optimal solution suffers from computational complexity and does not scale well even for moderately large problem sizes. Hence, we additionally propose heuristic algorithms for task mapping and scheduling. The efficiency of the proposed scheme, named MESSI, has been evaluated through experiments using PTG on a practical CPU+FPGA system regarding current technology restrictions. Our experiments demonstrate that performance gains of 55.6% and area usage reductions of 46.3% are possible compared to full Software (SW) and HW execution, respectively. © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s). The goal of this paper is to review the first projects for building automatic computing machines during the first half of the 20th century. The presented timeline shows that 85 years ago - in October 1939 - the first breadboard proof-of-concept prototype of an electronic digital computer became operational. The credit for this revolutionary invention goes to John Vincent Atanasoff at Iowa State College. Using fresh insights and some nearly forgotten facts, we also review the origins of the IEEE computer Society and the role of organized professional activities, as well as the customer demand for spreading new ideas and design solutions for the fast-growing computer industry. The paper recognizes and explains the contribution of John Vincent Atanasoff to the invention and early development of electronic digital computing and the design of the modern computers that changed the world. © 2024 IEEE.

Smart autonomous vehicles can cooperatively drive as platoons offering benefits like enhanced safety, traffic efficiency, and fuel conservation. While traditionally platoons have followed a single-lane, train-like structure they face challenges when scaling that include communication range limitations and lane-change difficulties. In this article, we propose a new paradigm of multi-lane platoons that spreads platoons across multiple lanes. We explore the characteristics of multi-lane platoons particularly focusing on communication parameters. Additionally, we propose a cross-layer mechanism to seamlessly integrate this concept within the existing communication standard, ETSI. Our work significantly enhances platoon communication performance in mixed traffic scenarios and we propose optimizations to improve its effectiveness. © 2024 IEEE.

Secure Batch Deduplication without Dual Servers in Backup System

Cloud storage provides highly available and low cost resources to users. However, as massive amounts of outsourced data grow rapidly, an effective data deduplication scheme is necessary. This is a hot and challenging field, in which there are quite a few researches. However, most of previous works require dual-server fashion to be against brute-force attacks and do not support batch checking. It is not practicable for the massive data stored in the cloud. In this paper, we present a secure batch deduplication scheme for backup system. Besides, our scheme resists the brute-force attacks without the aid of other servers. The core idea of the batch deduplication is to separate users into different groups by using short hashes. Within each group, we leverage group key agreement and symmetric encryption to achieve secure batch checking and semantically secure storage. We also extensively evaluate its performance and overhead based on different datasets. We show that our scheme saves the data storage by up to 89.84%. These results show that our scheme is efficient and scalable for cloud backup system and can also ensure data confidentiality. IEEE

Registration of point clouds is a fundamental task in robotic SLAM pipelines. Typically this task is performed only on point clouds of the same sensor or at least the same sensing modality. However, robots designed for challenging environments are often equipped with redundant sensors for the same task where some sensors are more accurate and others are more robust against disturbing environmental conditions. Being able to register the data across the modalities is an important step to more fault-tolerant localization and mapping. We therefore propose a learning framework, which describes the points in the point cloud invariant of their modality. This description is then used in a transformer-like model to find point matches for the registration process. We demonstrate our results using a scanning lidar and radar sensor on our own and publicly available datasets. © 2024 IEEE.

Deep neural network for emojis-based sentiment classification

Sentiment classification using emojis on social media has become increasingly crucial in recent years. Social media commonly uses emojis to convey feelings, emotions, and moods. Hence, in this article, a Jellyfish Algorithm based on a Deep Convolution Neural Network (JA-DCNN) is developed for the sentiment classification of the emojis. Initially, the emoji images are collected from the open-source system. The proposed sentiment classification process uses a Jellyfish Algorithm (JA) optimized Deep Convolution Neural Network (DCNN). In DCNN, the hyperparameters are selected with the help of JA to improve accuracy and efficiency. The proposed method aims to improve the training features, maintain the resolution, reduce memory consumption, and improve the system’s accuracy. The proposed method decreases the computation cost and memory consumption, which empowers the system’s performance in emojis-based sentiment classification. The proposed method is implemented in MATLAB, and performance metrics of similarity and quality measurements evaluate performances. To validate the performance of the proposed methodology, it is compared with conventional methods such as MobilenetV2, ResNet18, and ResNet50, which have been proven to obtain better performance metrics. © Bharati Vidyapeeth's Institute of computer Applications and Management 2025.

Large language models (LLMs) have demonstrated remarkable performance across various machine learning tasks. Yet the substantial memory footprint of LLMs significantly hinders their deployment. In this paper, we improve the accessibility of LLMs through BitMoD1, an algorithm-hardware co-design solution that enables efficient LLM acceleration at low weight precision. On the algorithm side, BitMoD introduces fine-grained data type adaptation that uses a different numerical data type to quantize a group of (e.g., 128) weights. Through the careful design of these new data types, BitMoD is able to quantize LLM weights to very low precision (e.g., 4 bits and 3 bits) while maintaining high accuracy. On the hardware side, BitMoD employs a bitserial processing element to easily support multiple numerical precisions and data types;our hardware design includes two key innovations: First, it employs a unified representation to process different weight data types, thus reducing the hardware cost. Second, it adopts a bit-serial dequantization unit to rescale the per-group partial sum with minimal hardware overhead. Our evaluation on six representative LLMs demonstrates that BitMoD significantly outperforms state-of-the-art LLM quantization and acceleration methods. Since the early 2000s, Model-driven engineering has aimed to accomplish executable UML models. With fUML and PSCS, the Object Management group (OMG) published standardized specifications of precise semantics for certain parts of UML in the form of metamodels, which form an execution environment. A certain characteristic of these environments is that static information about a model is analyzed and evaluated during runtime. With composite structures being a concept for describing structural properties of a model, the majority of execution semantics specified by PSCS concern analysis and processing of such static information about the model’s fine-grained structure. Thus, the PSCS specification appears suitable for a generative realization approach. Using Model-To-Text-Transformation to generate source code, which serves as an input for the actual execution environment, the runtime level of model executions can be relieved by outsourcing analysis and processing of static information to the level of code generation. By inserting this preprocessing step, the performance of the actual model execution at runtime can be improved. This paper introduces an implementation of the PSCS specification for C++ based on code generation using Model-to-Text-Transformation. This also includes a generative approach to realize an extension mechanism of the fUML and PSCS execution environments by introducing user-defined semantic execution strategies. The proposed PSCS implementation was developed as a part of the MDE4CPP project. Moreover, this paper presents a set of test models validating the correct functionality of the implementation as well as a performance benchmark. Cancers have emerged as a significant concern due to their impact on public health and society. The examination and interpretation of tissue sections stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) play a crucial role in disease assessment, particularly in cases like gastric cancer. Microsatellite instability (MSI) is suggested to contribute to the carcinogenesis of specific gastrointestinal tumors. However, due to the nonspecific morphology observed in H&E-stained tissue sections, MSI determination often requires costly evaluations through various molecular studies and immunohistochemistry methods in specialized molecular pathology laboratories. Despite the high cost, international guidelines recommend MSI testing for gastrointestinal cancers. Thus, there is a pressing need for a new diagnostic modality with lower costs and widespread applicability for MSI detection. This study aims to detect MSI directly from H&E histology slides in gastric cancer, providing a cost-effective alternative. The performance of well-known deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) and a proposed architecture are compared. Medical image datasets are typically smaller than benchmark datasets like ImageNet, necessitating the use of off-the-shelf DCNN architectures developed for large datasets through techniques such as transfer learning. Designing an architecture proportional to a custom dataset can be tedious and may not yield desirable results. In this work, we propose an automatic method to extract a lightweight and efficient architecture from a given heavy architecture (e.g., well-known off-the-shelf DCNNs) proportional to a specific dataset. To predict MSI instability, we extracted the MicroNet architecture from the Xception network using the proposed method and compared its performance with other well-known architectures.
