Underfrequency load shedding (UFLS) schemes are traditionally implemented in two ways. One approach is based on manual load shedding implemented by system operators. The second approach is automatic load shedding, implemented through underfrequency relays. The main limitation of traditional load shedding schemes is that they are reactive and leave little room for optimized corrective actions. This work presents a proactive and automatic underfrequency load shedding framework for power systems. Measurements are captured via phasor measurement units (PMUs) at relatively low rates of 30 fps. These measurements are then processed by a particle filter which predicts the future state of frequency. Based on these predictions excess loading is determined and shed. Comparative case studies are performed via simulations. Easy-to-implement models, without hard-to-derive parameters, highlight the potential for real-life implementation.

The effects of multipath on the statistical cell-edge user service quality is for the first time investigated for mm-wave multi-user communication systems. The focus is given on setting the user spacing constraints and the transmit array topology via thinning, which can be used to enhance wireless security or decrease analog/digital complexity. A hybrid line-of-sight/non-line-of-sight channel is created by using a statistical model following the communication standards. The multipath signal components are included in the model by using non-coherent or coherent modes of operation. It is shown in simulation that selection, by the medium access control layer, of large angular spacings between the simultaneously served users and application of antenna array thinning at the array edges improves the system performance.

In this study, the thermal management problem of the modern communication systems with small array sizes is addressed. A novel dual-functional active antenna design strategy is introduced for adjustable frequency of operation and cooling extension at millimeter-wave bands. The concept is based on placing different types of heatsinks on the same patch antenna. The electromagnetic and thermal behavior of the proposed heatsink structures are presented via simulations. Reconfigurable operation at 24, 26, and 28 GHz frequencies with 23 to 28 degrees of extra cooling in the chip as compared to the conventional patch is achieved.

The problem of single-snapshot direction of arrival (DoA) estimation with antenna arrays has been considered. A sectorized approach based on Bayesian Compressive Sensing (BCS) has been proposed. In this method, the angular space is discretized, defining many non-overlapping small grids which cover the desired large angular space. First, a BCS estimation is run in each of the sectors to estimate the DoA of the signals. Then, a second stage is performed to correct the inconsistencies at the edges due to signal leaking between sectors. The performance of the method has been analyzed via extensive Monte-Carlo simulations in which the number of targets, their Radar Cross Section (RCS), and their location have been varied in a large extent, and the targets were observed by a Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar with an 86-element Uniform Linear Array (ULA). The results are compared with state-of-the-art methods in terms of estimation accuracy and resolution. Moreover, an analysis of the computational time, critical for many real-time applications, is presented, which shows a reduction of 20 times in the computational time compared with the standard BCS. Finally, the method has also been validated using experimental data collected with a commercial automotive radar.

Critical nonlinear aspects of hopping transport for reconfigurable logic in disordered dopant networks

Nonlinear behavior in the hopping transport of interacting charges enables reconfigurable logic in disordered dopant network devices, where voltages applied at control electrodes tune the relation between voltages applied at input electrodes and the current measured at an output electrode. From kinetic Monte Carlo simulations we analyze the critical nonlinear aspects of variable-range hopping transport for realizing Boolean logic gates in these devices on three levels. First, we quantify the occurrence of individual gates for random choices of control voltages. We find that linearly inseparable gates such as the xor gate are less likely to occur than linearly separable gates such as the and gate, despite the fact that the number of different regions in the multidimensional control voltage space for which and or xor gates occur is comparable. Second, we use principal-component analysis to characterize the distribution of the output current vectors for the (00,10,01,11) logic input combinations in terms of eigenvectors and eigenvalues of the output covariance matrix. This allows a simple and direct comparison of the behavior of different simulated devices and a comparison to experimental devices. Third, we quantify the nonlinearity in the distribution of the output current vectors necessary for realizing Boolean functionality by introducing three nonlinearity indicators. The analysis provides a physical interpretation of the effects of changing the hopping distance and temperature and is used in a comparison with data generated by a deep neural network trained on a physical device.

Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are being increasingly established for autonomous contacted-based inspection of industrial assets, reducing the risk of errors by human operators. However, challenges remain in the navigation under unreliable Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) signals, or in the detection and interaction with the inspection surface, which limits the autonomy level of current UAV industrial technologies. This paper presents a semi-autonomous framework which combines automated target detection and interaction in GNSS-denied environments, with supervision commands by a human operator, to increase both safety and reliability. Our framework is composed of: (i) a camera-based onboard odometry solution for positioning the UAV in GNSSdenied conditions, (ii) a target-detection and filtering algorithm which estimates the orientation and position of the interaction target and (iii) a visual servoing strategy for approaching and contacting the target. The proposed framework is developed completely in ROS, and can be used with any commercial UAV. The framework is validated through outdoor flights, where a UAV detects and contacts a target on a vertical pipe.

Distributed consensus-based voltage and frequency control for isolated microgrids with fault-induced delayed voltage recovery mitigation

This paper presents a distributed consensus-based voltage and frequency control (VFC) strategy for isolated microgrids with distributed energy resources (DERs) and induction motor loads. The proposed controller coordinates the DERs to regulate microgrid frequency and voltage while mitigating fault-induced delayed voltage recovery (FIDVR), a phenomenon where system voltage remains depressed for several seconds after fault clearance due to induction motor stalling. The VFC loop adjusts DER voltage setpoints based on frequency deviation and voltage level to regulate voltage and mitigate FIDVR events, while the active power control loop maintains frequency stability by coordinating active power sharing among DERs and compensating for the constant power load behavior of stalled induction motors. A proximity-based reactive power support prioritization and a distributed voltage estimator enhance the controller’s response to FIDVR events. Coordination between the VFC and active power control loops is achieved through adaptive gain adjustment and a voltage recovery coordination term. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed controller in maintaining microgrid stability, ensuring fast voltage recovery, and providing robust performance under various operating conditions, including communication delays and different fault durations. With the ubiquitous and distributed nature of the Internet-of-Things (IoT), various qualities of traditional communication methods for end devices and their verifiers prove insufficient in solving the challenges this new paradigm faces. Many new hardware and software technologies are proposed in an attempt to provide IoT systems with desired security properties while meeting performance requirements. Physically Unclonable Functions (PUFs) are one such technology receiving particular interest from the wider research community by promising to provide low-cost and highly secure key data to enable lightweight authentication protocols for devices operating over publicly accessible networks. PUFs have been the target of Machine Learning Modelling Attacks (ML-MA), which aim to clone the intrinsic behaviour of the PUF to undermine their security. While many PUF-based schemes have been proposed to defend against adversaries who are guaranteed to be dishonest, an area which has not seen significant consideration is one where a normal communication participant cannot always be assumed to act honestly. To the best of our knowledge, this work is the first to consider the concept of ‘semi-honest verifier’ for PUFbased authentication, taking initial steps to shed light on this prominent issue in IoT by proposing a privacy-preserving mutual authentication protocol which considers security against MLMA in the presence of such verifiers. Furthermore, this work describes hardware-level considerations for PUF obfuscation by utilising a combination of strong PUF, configurable One-Way Function (OWF) and secure DRAM-PUF and is, therefore, one of the first to integrate PUF obfuscation comprehensively at the protocol level.

Normally, the electrocardiogram (ECG) signal artifacts are removed in a particular sequence starting with baseline wander removal at the beginning. In this work, a methodology has been proposed using a novel algorithm called the Normalized Leaky Sign Regressor Least Mean Mixed Norm (NLSRLMMN) algorithm to remove multiple ECG artifacts such as baseline wander, motion artifacts, muscle artifacts, and power line interference randomly without following a particular sequence. Through rigorous simulations we have shown that if we remove multiple ECG artifacts randomly using our proposed approach then an improvement in signal to noise ratio and mean square error is observed as opposed to a conventional method that employs the Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm in all the cascaded adaptive noise canceller stages.

LGBTQ+ individuals are increasingly turning to chatbots powered by large language models (LLMs) to meet their mental health needs. However, little research has explored whether these chatbots can adequately and safely provide tailored support for this demographic. We interviewed 18 LGBTQ+ and 13 non-LGBTQ+ participants about their experiences with LLM-based chatbots for mental health needs. LGBTQ+ participants relied on these chatbots for mental health support, likely due to an absence of support in real life. Notably, while LLMs offer prompt support, they frequently fall short in grasping the nuances of LGBTQ-specific challenges. Although fine-tuning LLMs to address LGBTQ+ needs can be a step in the right direction, it isn't the panacea. The deeper issue is entrenched in societal discrimination. Consequently, we call on future researchers and designers to look beyond mere technical refinements and advocate for holistic strategies that confront and counteract the societal biases burdening the LGBTQ+ community. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s)
