Synthetic Biology aims to create biological systems from scratch that do not exist in nature. An important method in this context is the engineering of DNA sequences such that cells realize Boolean functions that serve as control mechanisms in biological systems, e.g. in medical or agricultural applications. Libraries of logic gates exist as predefined gene sequences, based on the genetic mechanism of transcriptional regulation. Each individual gate is composed of different biological parts to allow for the differentiation of their output signals. Even gates of the same logic type therefore exhibit different transfer characteristics, i.e. relation from input to output signals. Thus, simulation of the whole network of genetic gates is needed to determine the performance of a genetic circuit. This makes mapping Boolean functions to these libraries much more complicated compared to EDA. Yet, optimal results are desired in the design phase due to high lab implementation costs. In this work, we identify fundamental features of the transfer characteristic of gates based on transcriptional regulation which is widely used in genetic gate technologies. Based on this, we present novel exact (Branch-and-Bound) and heuristic (Branch-and-Bound, Simulated Annealing) algorithms for the problem of technology mapping of genetic circuits and evaluate them using a prominent gate library. In contrast to state-of-the-art tools, all obtained solutions feature a (near) optimal output performance. Our exact method only explores 6.5 % and the heuristics even 0.2 % of the design space.

This paper presents the study of the monitoring of student attendance in a Smart Campus using the IoT Motion Detection Sensors, and the implementation of IoT technology in educational institutions. The proposed solution is far more secure than the existing RFID monitoring system. The IoT devices are embedded into the existing campus environment for data to be collected, transmitted through Wi-Fi using MQTT protocol and store data in local server. The collected data is then accessible to the management with real time insights and attendance pattern. The proposed solution was tested in a one UG course in real time over a period of 8 hours (9:00 – 13:00 and 14:00 -18:00).

This paper presents a novel aerial robotics application of instance segmentation-based floating litter collection with a multi-rotor aerial vehicle (MRAV). In the scope of the paper, we present a review of the available datasets for litter detection and segmentation. The reviewed datasets are used to train a Mask-RCNN neural network for instance segmentation. The neural network is off-board deployed on an edge computing device and used for litter position estimation. Based on the estimated litter position, we plan a path based on a quadratic Bezier curve for the litter pickup. We compare different trajectory generation methods for the object pickup. The system is verified in a laboratory environment. Eventually, we present practical considerations and improvements necessary to enable autonomous litter collection with MRAV.

The paper proposes a Fuzzy-I controller for optimal load frequency control (LFC) in a two-area interconnected power system. The proposed controller is composed of a fuzzy logic controller (FLC) and an integral (I) controller. To achieve a better dynamic response for the LFC, the integral controller and frequency bias parameters of the secondary loop are tuned using the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique. To boost the efficiency of the optimization, a proposed objective function using the integral of squared error (ISE) and settling time is used. A comparative study and analysis are conducted between the base system controller, optimized I controller, and the proposed controller under three different scenarios of load disturbances. The robustness of the proposed controller is shown by performing a sensitivity analysis for various system parameters and operating conditions. Moreover, the performance of the proposed controller was compared with the previous LFC approaches published in the literature. The simulation outcomes demonstrate that the proposed method has an outstanding performance. The work results are presented as time-domain simulations using MATLAB/SIMULINK tool.

Non-Terrestrial networks (NTNs) complement their terrestrial counterparts in enabling ubiquitous connectivity globally by serving unserved and/or underserved areas of the world. Supporting enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB) data over NTNs has been extensively studied in the past. However, focus on massive machine type communication (mMTC) over NTNs is currently growing. Evidence for this are the work items included into the 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP) agenda for commissioning standards for Internet-of-Things (IoT) communications over NTNs. Supporting mMTC in non-Terrestrial cellular IoT (C-IoT) networks requires jointly addressing the unique challenges introduced in NTNs and C-IoT communications. In this paper, we tackle one such issue caused due to the extended round-Trip time and increased path loss in NTNs resulting in a degraded network throughput. We propose smarter transport blocks scheduling methods that can increase the efficiency of resource utilization. We conduct end-To-end link-level simulations of C-IoT traffic over NTNs. Our numerical results of throughput show the improvement in performance achieved using our proposed solutions against legacy scheduling methods. © 2020 IEEE.

This paper introduces a novel Sliding Mode-Based Observer tailored for a specific subset of nonlinear systems of order $\boldsymbol n$ featuring Lipschitz nonlinearities. The study establishes stability conditions that ensure convergence of the estimation error (s) in finite time until order $\boldsymbol n$ , thus, providing an accurate state (s) estimation without the necessity for disturbance matching conditions. Furthermore, the study presents an extension of the scope of application of the proposed method to tackle a unique scenario characterized by a time-varying and non-invertible function of the output dynamics of the system model. The effectiveness of the proposed observer is showcased through simulation examples.

Citizen science should adhere as much as possible to the ideas of open science. On the topic of data sharing, the FAIR principles could be applied, making data as open as possible and as closed as necessary. However, it is unclear how open participants want to be with health-related data that is collected as part of a citizen science project. The current study is a first investigation of this topic with a multidisciplinary group of stakeholders and experts in a citizen science for health project. In two focus group discussions we discussed the views and desires regarding the sharing of data and the preferences for the levels of openness when sharing. The results of this study provide preliminary preferences regarding openness;people find sharing of data important yet not all are comfortable with making data completely open. Therefore, it was chosen to share metadata of our projects in repositories, and provide the full, anonymized or pseudonimized, dataset upon reasonable request. The increasing wide popularity of Electro-Adhension actuation through Dielectric Elastomer is credited to their suitability in several bio-inspired applications such as flexible prosthetics, humanoid grasps, bio-mimicking robots etc. Virtually all DEAs suffer from precise positioning challenges due to their inherent strong nonlinear dynamics, namely: creep and hysteresis. As a consequence, there is a necessity to establish control-enabling DEA models and accompanying control strategies that eliminate these undesirable dynamics and allow for precise reference tracking. In this paper, an experimentally validated DEA model is employed to design a simple yet well-performing control strategy based on the Sliding Mode Control (SMC) philosophy. To further enhance the control performance and improve implementability, a technique to eliminate the inherent control input chattering present in typical SMC designs is also described. Extensive closed-loop simulations are performed, and tracking performances are quantified to justify the designed superiority of the control scheme performance.

Moving Target Defense (MTD) is the defensive strat-egy of obscuring an entity by controlled changes in its attack surface. This approach alone does not secure a system but challenges potential attacks with additional complexity. This work presents an MTD solution called “Randomized Host and Service Shuffling in IPv6 (RHSS6)” against network reconnaissance attacks and evaluates its effects on performance and security. To achieve this goal, a Software Defined Networking (SDN) based prototype was developed in which RHSS6 performs two MTD strategies, IP Shuffling and Port Shuffling. Measurements on TCP and UDP traffic are made to evaluate the performance impact of RHSS6. An MTD network with both IP Shuffling and Port Shuffling had similar performance results compared to a baseline network; however, the video stream bit rate was significantly lower when Port Shuffling was enforced. Regarding the security gain, RHSS6 was effective in increasing the average number of scan attempts needed to identify a targeted host in a network with a fixed address range. We conclude that a defender using RHSS6 can adjust the probability of an attacker locating targeted hosts in a network by selecting a suitable address space and port range. Such parameters and shuffling trigger time can be optimized to maximize the benefits for different scenarios while minimizing the operational overhead.

The study of volcanoes is of primary importance due to the great impact that eruptions can have on the economy, safety, air traffic, and several other human activities. A main indicator of volcanic activities, crucial to predicting events, is based on the analysis of gases emitted from a volcano's vents. Acquisition of gas samples is, however, challenging due to extreme working conditions and safety precautions. A further challenge is also locating and relocating volcanic gas measurement devices, as plume density and direction can quickly change. In this paper, we propose to use an open-path gas analyzer mounted on a Pan-Tilt Unit that tracks a multirotor equipped with suitable mirrors. This allows to autonomously perform gas measurement missions in volcanic environments via Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy. The great advantage brought by such a multirotor-based approach is the rapid and accurate measurement of gases, which makes monitoring and prediction activities safer, timely, and cost-effective. The effectiveness and accuracy of the proposed approach has been tested in a real application.
