Honorary Member of the A.S.N.E. has the B.S. in E.E. M.S. in E.E. and E.E. degrees. He was National Coffin Foundation Fellow of the General Electric Company National Tau Beta Pi Fellow and National Sigma Tau Fellow at the Moore School of Electrical Engineering University of Pennsylvania and at M.I.T. prior to World War II. He was also awarded a National Gordon McKay Fellowship by Harvard University and received the A. Atwater Kent Award in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania. A licensed radio amateur at 12 Mr. Herr first worked summers at RCA and Bell Laboratories and was with the General Electric Company in 1939 and 1940 as development engineer before volunteering for over five years of active Naval duty. He served as Officer-in-Charge Electrical Minesweeping Group Bureau of Ships December 1940 to April 1943 as Acting Design Superintendent and Officer-in-Charge

Office of Naval Research to January 1946 returning to inactive duty as lieutenant commander U.S.N.R. Mr. Herr received two Navy letters of commendation. Since 1946 he was assistant to vice president in charge of the engineering division of Control Instrument Company Brooklyn New York and is project engineer at the Reeves Instrument Corporation responsible for new servo and computer component developments. Mr. Herr has been associated with Dean Harold Pender and Professor Ernst Guillemin in advanced network theory and has specialized for 12 years in development and design of servomechanisms differential analyzers computers and fire control systems utilizing advanced network analysis and synthesis methods. He has contributed frequently to the JournalOF THE AmericanSocietyOF NavalEngineersand was the Society's 1945 Prize Essayist on the subject: “Engineering in the Navy as seen by an Active Reserve Officer.” He is senior member of the I.R.E

The SAMOS workshop is an international gathering of highly quali?ed researchers from academia and industry, sharing in a 3-day lively discussion on the quiet and - spiring northern mountainside of the Mediterranean island of Samos. As a tradition, the workshop features workshop presentations in the morning, while after lunch all kinds of informal discussions and nut-cracking gatherings take place. The workshop is unique in the sense that not only solved research problems are presented and discussed but also (partly) unsolved problems and in-depth topical reviews can be unleashed in the sci- ti?c arena. Consequently, the workshop provides the participants with an environment where collaboration rather than competition is fostered. The earlier workshops, SAMOS I–IV (2001–2004), were composed only of invited presentations. Due to increasing expressions of interest in the workshop, the Program Committee of SAMOS V decided to open the workshop for all submissions. As a result the SAMOS workshop gained an immediate popularity; a total of 114 submitted papers were received for evaluation. The papers came from 24 countries and regions: Austria (1), Belgium (2), Brazil (5), Canada (4), China (12), Cyprus (2), Czech Republic (1), Finland (15), France (6), Germany (8), Greece (5), Hong Kong (2), India (2), Iran (1), Korea (24), The Netherlands (7), Pakistan (1), Poland (2), Spain (2), Sweden (2), T- wan (1), Turkey (2), UK (2), and USA (5). We are grateful to all of the authors who submitted papers to the workshop.

This volume of the Lecture Notes in computer Science series contains the papers accepted for presentation at the Third International Conference on Autonomous - frastructure, Management and Security (AIMS 2009). The conference took place in Enschede, The Netherlands, hosted by the University of Twente. AIMS 2009 was - ganized and supported by the EC IST-EMANICS Network of Excellence (#26854) and co-sponsored by IFIP WG 6.6 and the Strategic Research Orientation of the University of Twente on Dependable systems and Networks (DSN). AIMS 2009 constituted the Third edition of a single-track and standalone c- ference on management and security aspects of distributed and autonomous systems, which took place initially in Oslo, Norway in June 2007, followed by AIMS 2008 in Bremen, Germany. The theme of the AIMS 2009 conference was “Scalability of Networks and S- vices,” focusing on how scalable networked systems can be monitored, managed, and protected in an ef cient and autonomous way. The research papers that have been - lected for publication in the present proceedings have approached this theme from d- ferent perspectives, covering topics such as network resource management, overlays andpeer-to-peernetworks,networkcon gurationandoptimization,andmonitoringand visualization.

HUMM, PFTHE AUTHOR is the Head of the Interior Communications Section in the Naval Ship Engineering Center
NAVSHIPS. He holds a BS degree in physics from St. Francis College Loretto Pa. and has taken graduate work in electronic engineering at the University of Delaware and John Hopkins University. Mr. Humm was a physicist at Aberdeen Proving Ground Maryland until 1959 when he accepted a position of Project Engineer in the Ship Systems Branch at Naval Ship Research and Development Center Annapolis. Mr. Humm came to the Bureau of Ships Interior Communications Navigation Control and Computer Systems Branch as Project Engineer for submarine systems in Ship Control and Indicating Group then head of the Integrated Ship Systems Group and later head of the Voice Communications Group. He assumed his present position in January 1969.

The First International Workshop on Traffic Monitoring and Analysis (TMA 2009) was an initiative from the COST Action IC0703 "Data Traffic Monitoring and Analysis: Theory, Techniques, Tools and Applications for the Future Networks" (***). The COST program is an intergovernmental framework for European Cooperation in Science and Technology, allowing the coordination of nationally funded research on a European level. Each COST Action contributes to reducing the fragmentation in research and opening the European Research Area to cooperation worldwide. Traffic monitoring and analysis (TMA) is now an important research topic within the field of networking. It involves many research groups worldwide that are coll- tively advancing our understanding of the Internet. The importance of TMA research is motivated by the fact that modern packet n- works are highly complex and ever-evolving objects. Understanding, developing and managing such environments is difficult and expensive in practice. Traffic monitoring is a key methodology for understanding telecommunication technology and improving its operation, and the recent advances in this field suggest that evolved TMA-based techniques can play a key role in the operation of real networks. Moreover, TMA offers a basis for prevention and response in network security, as typically the det- tion of attacks and intrusions requires the analysis of detailed traffic records. On the more theoretical side, TMA is an attractive research topic for many reasons.
