Performance comparison of discrete-time robust adaptive controllers for grid-tied power converters under unbalanced grids

Renewable energy generation systems largely use grid-tied power converters with LCL filters. A well-known issue in this kind of system is the resonance of the LCL filter, whose frequency is straightforwardly affected by grid condition. Variations on grid impedance tends to make the controller performance poor and until turn the closed-loop unstable. Therefore, some controllers are designed for specific operation ranges to ensure performance and global stability. However, a deep study of Model Reference Adaptive-based Controllers for this kind of issue was not conducted yet. The aim of this paper is to fit this research gap. Thus, this paper presents a performance comparison of feasible discrete-time robust adaptive controllers, based on reduced order reference model, for grid-tied power converters with LCL filter under unbalanced grid conditions, providing an assessment of the benefits and drawbacks of each considered control strategy. The evaluated control laws are: Robust Model Reference Adaptive Controller, Robust Model Reference-based Adaptive Super-Twisting Sliding Mode Controller, Robust Adaptive One Sample Ahead Preview Controller, and Robust Adaptive Proportional-Integral Controller. Through performance comparison, it can be defined what controller is more adequate in face of grid condition, taking into consideration grid-injected currents quality and design complexity of controller. Experimental results of grid-injected current control of a grid-tied 5.8 kW Voltage-Source Inverter with LCL filter considering relevant grid voltage unbalance are presented to corroborate the controllers’ performance and discuss their reference tracking response, robustness to the parametric variation, exogenous disturbance rejection, parameters adaptability, and global stability. The paper presents a piecewise geometric parameterization method and a parametric analysis of uniaxial capacitance accelerometer using a reduced model formulated on the modal superposition method. The extraction of parameters for the macromodel such as modal frequencies, modal masses, modal stiffnesses, strain energy, and capacitances are described. The reduced model consists of the two modes: torsion mode, and transversal mode, three electrodes in the electrostatic domain, and eight master nodes in the geometrical domain located at the edges of the plate. The generation of the discrete macromodels is executed using commercial software. The thickness of the plate has been selected as a design parameter. Linear piecewise interpolation is used for macromodel parameterization which have been done inside VHDL-AMS code. The accelerometer’s dynamic response simulated using of parametrized macromodel considering the mechanical contact phenomena and the nonlinear electrostatic interaction are presented and discussed. The developed approach can be applied for fast system level simulations in view of the variation of the geometric parameters.

Massive volumes of high-frequency and high-volume data are constantly being generated by the vast amount of available tracking sensors of moving objects. This phenomenon can be strongly observed in the maritime domain since most of the vessels transmit their location periodically. Automated methodologies able to extract meaningful information from vessel data is of utmost importance since it can reveal abnormal or illegal vessel activities in due time. Supervised deep learning approaches such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) require a large-scale annotated image dataset. Thus, semi-and unsupervised feature learning algorithms which learn image features from unlabelled data are able to mitigate this problem. To this end, in this work we propose a semi-supervised convolutional autoencoder (CAE) model for trajectory classification which is able to provide high-precision classification of mobility patterns. Experimental results demonstrated that the vessel activity classification performance can reach an F1-score of over 94%. © 2021 ACM.

Many assisting exploration strategies have been proposed to assist grey-box fuzzers in exploring program states guarded by tight and complex branch conditions such as equality constraints. Although they have shown promising results in their original papers, their evaluations seldom follow equivalent protocols, e.g., they are rarely evaluated on identical benchmarks. Moreover, there is a lack of sufficient investigations on the specifics of the program states explored by these strategies which can obfuscate the future application and development of such strategies. Consequently, there is a pressing need for a comprehensive study of assisting exploration strategies on their effectiveness, versatility, and limitations to enlighten their future development. To this end, we perform the first comprehensive study about the assisting exploration strategies for grey-box fuzzers. Specifically, we first collect nine recent fuzzers representing the mainstream assisting exploration strategies as our studied subjects and 21 real-world projects to form our benchmark suite. After evaluating the subjects on the benchmark suite, we then surprisingly find that the dictionary strategy is most promising since it not only achieves similar or even slightly better performance over the other studied assisting exploration strategies in terms of exploring program states but also is more practical to be enhanced. Accordingly, we propose CDFUZZ, which generates a customized dictionary for each seed upon the baseline fuzzer AFL to improve over the original dictionary strategy. The evaluation results demonstrate that CDFUZZ increases the edge coverage by 16.1% on average for all benchmark projects over the best performer in our study (i.e., AFL++ with the dictionary strategy). CDFUZZ also successfully exposed 37 previously unknown bugs, with nine confirmed and seven fixed by the corresponding developers.

We report the theoretical and experimental investigation of pentamer arrangements of nanoholes in a thin Au film arrayed over a large area. The pentamer arrangements support coupled plasmonic resonances localized to the nanoholes that exhibit a high near-field sensitivity and low polarization dependance. The structures are compelling for applications in biosensing and in surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS).

IoT data traffic in future mobile networks is expected to grow significantly and, thus, pose challenges for service providers. IoT traffic is anticipated to be in the form of huge number of small data packets. These packets would consume radio resources inadequately and result in reduced spectral efficiency. This paper proposes a unique application of packet aggregation in mobile networks for enhanced spectral efficiency. Additionally, the timer mechanism for avoiding long delays is also incorporated to further improve the system performance. Results indicate that improvement in spectral efficiency would help in increased system capacity. © 2019 IEEE.

The Cauchy-Schwarz (CS) divergence was developed by Príncipe et al. in 2000. In this paper, we extend the classic CS divergence to quantify the closeness between two conditional distributions and show that the developed conditional CS divergence can be elegantly estimated by a kernel density estimator from given samples. We illustrate the advantages (e.g., rigorous faithfulness guarantee, lower computational complexity, higher statistical power, and much more flexibility in a wide range of applications) of our conditional CS divergence over previous proposals, such as the conditional KL divergence and the conditional maximum mean discrepancy. We also demonstrate the compelling performance of conditional CS divergence in two machine learning tasks related to time series data and sequential inference, namely time series clustering and uncertainty-guided exploration for sequential decision making. Defining and measuring trust in dynamic, multiagent teams is important in a range of contexts, particularly in defense and security domains. Team members should be trusted to work towards agreed goals and in accordance with shared values. In this paper, our concern is with the definition of goals and values such that it is possible to define ‘trust’ in a way that is interpretable, and hence usable, by both humans and robots. We argue that the outcome of team activity can be considered in terms of ‘goal’, ‘individual/team values’, and ‘legal principles’. We question whether alignment is possible at the level of ‘individual/team values’, or only at the ‘goal’ and ‘legal principles’ levels. We argue for a set of metrics to define trust in human-robot teams that are interpretable by human or robot team members, and consider an experiment that could demonstrate the notion of ‘satisficing trust’ over the course of a simulated mission. © 2023, CC BY.

Extended Dynamic Mode Decomposition (EDMD) is a popular data-driven method to approximate the Koopman operator for deterministic and stochastic (control) systems. This operator is linear and encompasses full information on the (expected stochastic) dynamics. In this paper, we analyze a kernel-based EDMD algorithm, known as kEDMD, where the dictionary consists of the canonical kernel features at the data points. The latter are acquired by i.i.d. samples from a user-defined and application-driven distribution on a compact set. We prove bounds on the prediction error of the kEDMD estimator when sampling from this (not necessarily ergodic) distribution. The error analysis is further extended to control-affine systems, where the considered invariance of the Reproducing Kernel Hilbert Space is significantly less restrictive in comparison to invariance assumptions on an a-priori chosen dictionary. © 2023, CC BY.

The performance of a battery pack is greatly affected by an imbalance between the cells. Cell balancing is a very important criterion for Battery Management System (BMS) to operate properly. This paper presents the various cell balancing topologies which have been presented by various researchers in the past years. A novel topology has also been discussed, which improves the overall efficiency of the components being used. Various comparison parameters such as Control, Speed, Efficiency, Power Effects, Manufacturability, Size, and Cost have been considered.
