Reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) has emerged as a cost-effective and promising solution to extend the wireless signal coverage and improve the performance via passive signal reflection. Different from existing works which do not account for the cooperation between RISs or do not provide full space coverage, we propose the marriage of cooperative double-RIS with simultaneously transmitting and reflecting RIS (STAR-RIS) technologies denoted as RIS/STAR-RIS under correlated Rayleigh fading conditions to assist the communication in a massive multiple-input multiple-output (mMIMO) setup. The proposed architecture is superior since it enjoys the benefits of the individual designs. We introduce a channel estimation approach of the cascaded channels with reduced overhead. Also, we obtain the deterministic equivalent (DE) of the downlink achievable sum spectral efficiency (SE) in closed form based on large-scale statistics. Notably, relied on statistical channel state information (CSI), we optimise both surfaces by means of the projected gradient ascent method (PGAM), and obtain the gradients in closed form. The proposed optimization achieves to maximise the sum SE of such a complex system, and has low complexity and low overhead since it can be performed at every several coherence intervals. Numerical results show the benefit of the proposed architecture and verify the analytical framework. In particular, we show that the RIS/STAR-RIS architecture outperforms the conventional double-RIS or its single-RIS counterparts. © 2023, CC BY.

Obtaining models that can be used for control is of utmost importance to ensure the guidance and navigation of spacecraft, like a Generic Parafoil Return Vehicle (GPRV). In this paper, we convert a nonlinear model of the atmospheric flight dynamics of an GPRV to a Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) description, such that the LPV model is suitable for navigation control design. Automated conversion methods for nonlinear models can result in complex LPV representation, which are not suitable for controller synthesis. We apply several state-of-the-art techniques, including learning based approaches, to optimize the complexity and conservatism of the LPV embedding for an GPRV. The results show that we can obtain an LPV embedding that approximates the complex nonlinear dynamics sufficiently well, where the balance between complexity, conservatism and model performance is optimal. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

Optical fiber transmission systems form the back-bone of today’s communication networks and will be of high importance for future networks as well. Among the prominent noise effects in optical fiber is phase noise, which is induced by the Kerr effect. This effect limits the data transmission capacity of these networks and incurs high processing load on the receiver. At the same time, quantum information processing techniques offer more efficient solutions but are believed to be inefficient in terms of size, power consumption and resistance to noise. Here we investigate the concept of an all-optical joint detection receiver. We show how it contributes to enabling higher baud-rates for optical transmission systems when used as a pre-processor, even under high levels of noise induced by the Kerr effect.

Unlike for Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) systems, for nonlinear systems, there exists no general framework for systematic convex controller design which incorporates performance shaping. The Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) framework sought to bridge this gap by extending convex LTI synthesis results such that they could be applied to nonlinear systems. However, recent literature has shown that naive application of the LPV framework can fail to guarantee the desired asymptotic stability guarantees for nonlinear systems. Incremental dissipativity theory has been successfully used in the literature to overcome these issues for Continuous-Time (CT) systems. However, so far no solution has been proposed for output-feedback based incremental control for the Discrete-Time (DT) case. Using recent results on convex analysis of incremental dissipativity for DT nonlinear systems, in this paper, we propose a convex output-feedback controller synthesis method to ensure closed-loop incremental dissipativity of DT nonlinear systems via the LPV framework. The proposed method is applied on a simulation example, demonstrating improved stability and performance properties compared to a standard LPV controller design.

Recently, many KB-to-text generation tasks have been proposed to bridge the gap between knowledge bases and natural language by directly converting a group of knowledge base triples into human-readable sentences. However, most of the existing models suffer from the off-topic problem, namely, the models are prone to generate some unrelated clauses that are somehow involved with certain input terms regardless of the given input data. This problem seriously degrades the quality of the generation results. In this paper, we propose a novel dynamic topic tracker for solving this problem. Different from existing models, our proposed model learns a global hidden representation for topics and recognizes the corresponding topic during each generation step. The recognized topic is used as additional information to guide the generation process and thus alleviates the off-topic problem. The experimental results show that our proposed model can enhance the performance of sentence generation and the off-topic problem is significantly mitigated. © 2020 COLING 2020 - 28th International Conference on Computational Linguistics, Proceedings of the Conference. Spatial computing is a technological advancement that facilitates the seamless integration of devices into the physical environment, resulting in a more natural and intuitive digital world user experience. Spatial computing has the potential to become a significant advancement in the field of computing. From GPS and location-based services to healthcare, spatial computing technologies have influenced and improved our interactions with the digital world. The use of spatial computing in creating interactive digital environments has become increasingly popular and effective. This is explained by its increasing significance among researchers and industrial organisations, which motivated us to conduct this review. This review provides a detailed overview of spatial computing, including its enabling technologies and its impact on various applications. Projects related to spatial computing are also discussed. In this review, we also explored the potential challenges and limitations of spatial computing. Furthermore, we discuss potential solutions and future directions. Overall, this paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of spatial computing, its enabling technologies, their impact on various applications, emerging challenges, and potential solutions. © 2024, CC BY.

The ProCAncer-I project, an important initiative in the field of prostate cancer research, is exploiting the power of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to advance prostate cancer diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment. The success of AI in prostate cancer imaging within this context relies on meticulous data preparation, especially when dealing with clinical data that need to be integrated with imaging data. This paper explores the importance of data preparation to implement AI tools for prostate cancer imaging, and outlines the approach followed and challenges needed to be addressed in the context of ProCAncer-I, for ensuring data quality, privacy, and reliability. © 2023 IEEE.

The downlink channel estimation is currently a critical bottleneck for IRS-assisted cell-free multiple input multiple output communication. Conventionally, most studies have employed deep learning methods to estimate the high-dimensional, complex cascaded channels generated by IRS, necessitating data collection from all users for centralized model training, which results in excessively large overheads, and data privacy problems. To tackle this challenge, a federated learning (FL)-based channel estimation framework incorporates coalition formation to guide the formation of FL user groups. We propose a coalition formation-enabled federated learning framework for channel estimation, utilizing a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) approach to intelligently group users into multiple coalitions, thereby improving channel estimation accuracy. Moreover, considering that nodes with similar distances to the base station and similar received signal power have a strong likelihood that they experience similar channel fading, we designed a transfer learning method that incorporates both received reference signal power and distance similarity metrics. The transfer learning technique is designed to accelerate the convergence of DRL-federated learning process. Simulations reveal that the proposed algorithms significantly reduce communication overhead for local users and improve data privacy while maintaining commendable channel estimation accuracy. © 2025 IEEE.

Technology brings different benefits to society and involves challenges and ethical dilemmas that must be considered during any technology development. In this sense, graduates must recognise the social, legal, ethical and cultural issues inherent to the discipline of computer science. However, there is a lack of integration of computer ethics in the computer science curriculum in Spanish universities. This work introduces a pilot experience to develop a Small Private Open Course (SPOC) to introduce computer ethics as an extracurricular activity in the Bachelor's Degree of computer engineering at the University of Salamanca. © 2021 IEEE.

Minimal realizations of input-output behaviors by LPV state-space representations with affine dependency

The paper makes the first steps towards a behavioral theory of LPV state-space representations with an affine dependency on scheduling, by characterizing minimality of such state-space representations. It is shown that minimality is equivalent to observability, and that minimal realizations of the same behavior are isomorphic. Finally, we establish a formal relationship between minimality of LPV state-space representations with an affine dependence on scheduling and minimality of LPV state-space representations with a dynamic and meromorphic dependence on scheduling. © 2023, CC BY.
