Variational mode decomposition (VMD) and its extensions like Multivariate VMD (MVMD) decompose signals into ensembles of band-limited modes with narrow central frequencies. These methods utilize Fourier transformations to shift signals between time and frequency domains. However, since Fourier transformations span the entire time-domain signal, they are suboptimal for non-stationary time series. We introduce Short-Time Variational Mode Decomposition (STVMD), an innovative extension of the VMD algorithm that incorporates the Short-Time Fourier transform (STFT) to minimize the impact of local disturbances. STVMD segments signals into short time windows, converting these segments into the frequency domain. It then formulates a variational optimization problem to extract band-limited modes representing the windowed data. The optimization aims to minimize the sum of the bandwidths of these modes across the windowed data, extending the cost functions used in VMD and MVMD. Solutions are derived using the alternating direction method of multipliers, ensuring the extraction of modes with narrow bandwidths. STVMD is divided into dynamic and non-dynamic types, depending on whether the central frequencies vary with time. Our experiments show that non-dynamic STVMD is comparable to VMD with properly sized time windows, while dynamic STVMD better accommodates non-stationary signals, evidenced by reduced mode function errors and tracking of dynamic central frequencies. Dubbed "the successor to the mobile Internet", the concept of the Metaverse has grown in popularity. While there exist lite versions of the Metaverse today, they are still far from realizing the full vision of an immersive, embodied, and interoperable Metaverse. Without addressing the issues of implementation from the communication and networking, as well as computation perspectives, the Metaverse is difficult to succeed the Internet, especially in terms of its accessibility to billions of users today. In this survey, we focus on the edge-enabled Metaverse to realize its ultimate vision. We first provide readers with a succinct tutorial of the Metaverse, an introduction to the architecture, as well as current developments. To enable ubiquitous, seamless, and embodied access to the Metaverse, we discuss the communication and networking challenges and survey cutting-edge solutions and concepts that leverage next-generation communication systems for users to immerse as and interact with embodied avatars in the Metaverse. Moreover, given the high computation costs required, e.g., to render 3D virtual worlds and run data-hungry artificial intelligence-driven avatars, we discuss the computation challenges and cloud-edge-end computation framework-driven solutions to realize the Metaverse on resource-constrained edge devices. Next, we explore how blockchain technologies can aid in the interoperable development of the Metaverse, not just in terms of empowering the economic circulation of virtual user-generated content but also to manage physical edge resources in a decentralized, transparent, and immutable manner. Finally, we discuss the future research directions towards realizing the true vision of the edge-enabled Metaverse. © 2022, CC BY.

An Event-Driven Approach To Genotype Imputation On A Custom RISC-V FPGA Cluster

This paper proposes an event-driven solution to genotype imputation, a technique used to statistically infer missing genetic markers in DNA. The work implements the widely accepted Li and Stephens model, primary contributor to the computational complexity of modern x86 solutions, in an attempt to determine whether further investigation of the application is warranted in the event-driven domain. The model is implemented using graph-based Hidden Markov Modeling and executed as a customized forward/backward dynamic programming algorithm. The solution uses an event-driven paradigm to map the algorithm to thousands of concurrent cores, where events are small messages that carry both control and data within the algorithm. The design of a single processing element is discussed. This is then extended across multiple FPGAs and executed on a custom RISC-V NoC FPGA cluster called POETS. Results demonstrate how the algorithm scales over increasing hardware resources and a 48 FPGA run demonstrates a 270X reduction in wall-clock processing time when compared to a single-threaded x86 solution. Optimisation of the algorithm via linear interpolation is then introduced and tested, with results demonstrating a wall-clock reduction time of ∼5 orders of magnitude when compared to a similarly optimised x86 solution. Inelastic quantum mechanical tunneling of electrons across plasmonic tunnel junctions can lead to surface plasmon polariton(SPP)and photon *** far,the optical properties of such junctions have been controlled by changing the shape,or the type of the material,of the electrodes,primarily with the aim to improve SPP or photon emission *** we show that by tuning the tunneling barrier itself,the efficiency of the inelastic tunneling rates can be improved by a factor of *** exploit the anisotropic nature of hexagonal boron nitride(hBN)as the tunneling barrier material in Au//hBN//graphene tunnel junctions where the Au electrode also serves as a plasmonic strip *** this junction constitutes an optically transparent hBN–graphene heterostructure on a glass substrate,it forms an open plasmonic system where the SPPs are directly coupled to the dedicated strip waveguide and photons outcouple to the far *** experimentally and analytically show that the photon emission rate per tunneling electron is significantly improved(~×3)in Au//hBN//graphene tunnel junction due to the enhancement in the local density of optical states(LDOS)arising from the hBN *** the dedicated strip waveguide,SPP outcoupling efficiency is quantified and is found to be∼80%stronger than the radiative outcoupling in Au//hBN//graphene due to the high LDOS of the SPP decay channel associated with the inelastic *** new insights elucidated here deepen our understanding of plasmonic tunnel junctions beyond the isotropic models with enhanced LDOS.

The Coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)outbreak was rst discovered in Wuhan,China,and it has since spread to more than 200 *** World Health Organization proclaimed COVID-19 a public health emergency of international concern on January 30,***,a quickly spreading infection that could jeopardize the well-being of countless individuals requires prompt action to forestall the malady in a timely ***19 is a major threat worldwide due to its ability to rapidly *** vaccines are yet available for *** objective of this paper is to examine the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic,specically studying Hubei Province,China;Taiwan;South Korea;Japan;and Italy,in terms of exposed,infected,recovered/deceased,original conrmed cases,and predict conrmed cases in specic countries by using the susceptible-exposed-infectious-recovered model to predict the future outbreak of *** applied four differential equations to calculate the number of conrmed cases in each country,plotted them on a graph,and then applied polynomial regression with the logic of multiple linear regression to predict the further spread of the *** also compared the calculated and predicted cases of conrmed population and plotted them in the graph,where we could see that the lines of calculated and predicted cases do intersect with each other to give the perfect true results for the future spread of the *** study considered the cases from 22 January 2020 to 25 April 2020.

Filtering and signal extraction are essential ap-plications in some areas such as medical, electrical, pattern recognition, and other disciplines. For example, in regions of automatic detection, it is necessary to isolate specific signals to study them or accomplish the training process to reach a high detection rate. This paper proposes a new technique of signal extraction based on sparse representation and the Orthogonal Matching Pursuit algorithm, using discrete sine transform and discrete cosine transform to generate the dictionaries. Then, the signal is represented in the base of the given dictionary and limited to the desired bandwidth, extracting the desired information with almost no changes in phase and amplitude, reaching almost vertical slopes in lateral bands.

Many domains require scalable algorithms that help to determine diagnoses efficiently and often within predefined time limits. Anytime diagnosis is able to determine solutions in such a way and thus is especially useful in real-time scenarios such as production scheduling, robot control, and communication networks management where diagnosis and corresponding reconfiguration capabilities play a major role. Anytime diagnosis in many cases comes along with a trade-off between diagnosis quality and the efficiency of diagnostic reasoning. In this paper we introduce and analyze FLEXDIAG which is an anytime direct diagnosis approach. We evaluate the algorithm with regard to performance and diagnosis quality using a configuration benchmark from the domain of feature models and an industrial configuration knowledge base from the automotive domain. Results show that FLEXDIAG helps to significantly increase the performance of direct diagnosis search with corresponding quality tradeoffs in terms of minimality and accuracy. The Dunkl deformation of the Dirac operator is part of a realisation of an orthosymplectic Lie superalgebra inside the tensor product of a rational Cherednik algebra and a Clifford algebra. The Dunkl total angular momentum algebra (TAMA) occurs as the supercentraliser, or dual partner, of this Lie superalgebra. In this paper, we consider the case when the reflection group associated with the Dunkl operators is a product of two dihedral groups acting on a four-dimensional Euclidean space. We introduce a subalgebra of the total angular momentum algebra that admits a triangular decomposition and, in analogy to the celebrated theory of semisimple Lie algebras, we use this triangular subalgebra to give precise necessary conditions that a finite-dimensional irreducible representation must obey, in terms of weights. Furthermore, we construct a basis for representations of the TAMA with explicit actions. Examples of these modules occur in the kernel of the Dunkl–Dirac operator in the context of deformations of Howe dual pairs. © 2023, CC BY.

One of the key issues in human-robot collaboration is the development of computational models that allow robots to predict and adapt to human behavior. Much progress has been achieved in developing such models, as well as control techniques that address the autonomy problems of motion planning and decision-making in robotics. However, the integration of computational models of human behavior with such control techniques still poses a major challenge, resulting in a bottleneck for efficient collaborative human-robot teams. In this context, we present a novel architecture for human-robot collaboration: Adaptive Robot Motion for Collaboration with Humans using Adversarial Inverse Reinforcement learning (ARMCHAIR). Our solution leverages adversarial inverse reinforcement learning and model predictive control to compute optimal trajectories and decisions for a mobile multi-robot system that collaborates with a human in an exploration task. During the mission, ARMCHAIR operates without human intervention, autonomously identifying the necessity to support and acting accordingly. Our approach also explicitly addresses the network connectivity requirement of the human-robot team. Extensive simulation-based evaluations demonstrate that ARMCHAIR allows a group of robots to safely support a simulated human in an exploration scenario, preventing collisions and network disconnections, and improving the overall performance of the task. © 2024, CC BY-SA.

Incremental dissipativity based control of discrete-time nonlinear systems via the LPV framework

Unlike for Linear Time-Invariant (LTI) systems, for nonlinear systems, there exists no general framework for systematic convex controller design which incorporates performance shaping. The Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) framework sought to bridge this gap by extending convex LTI synthesis results such that they could be applied to nonlinear systems. However, recent literature has shown that naive application of the LPV framework can fail to guarantee the desired asymptotic stability guarantees for nonlinear systems. Incremental dissipativity theory has been successfully used in the literature to overcome these issues for Continuous-Time (CT) systems. However, so far no solution has been proposed for output-feedback based incremental control for the Discrete-Time (DT) case. Using recent results on convex analysis of incremental dissipativity for DT nonlinear systems, in this paper, we propose a convex output-feedback controller synthesis method to ensure closed-loop incremental dissipativity of DT nonlinear systems via the LPV framework. The proposed method is applied on a simulation example, demonstrating improved stability and performance properties compared to a standard LPV controller design. Copyright © 2021, The Authors.
