LPV modeling of nonlinear systems: A multi-path feedback linearization approach

This paper introduces a systematic approach to synthesize linear parameter-varying (LPV) representations of nonlinear (NL) systems which are described by input affine state-space (SS) representations. The conversion approach results in LPV-SS representations in the observable canonical form. Based on the relative degree concept, first the SS description of a given NL representation is transformed to a normal form. In the SISO case, all nonlinearities of the original system are embedded into one NL function, which is factorized, based on a proposed algorithm, to construct an LPV representation of the original NL system. The overall procedure yields an LPV model in which the scheduling variable depends on the inputs and outputs of the system and their derivatives, achieving a practically applicable transformation of the model in case of low order derivatives. In addition, if the states of the NL model can be measured or estimated, then a modified procedure is proposed to provide LPV models scheduled by these states. We investigate the problem of controller synthesis for hyperproperties specified in the temporal logic HyperLTL. Hyperproperties are system properties that relate multiple execution traces. Hyperproperties can elegantly express information-flow policies like noninterference and observational determinism. The controller synthesis problem is to automatically design a controller for a plant that ensures satisfaction of a given specification in the presence of the environment or adversarial actions. We show that the controller synthesis problem is decidable for HyperLTL specifications and finite-state plants. We provide a rigorous complexity analysis for different fragments of HyperLTL and different system types: tree-shaped, acyclic, and general graphs.

With the increasing demand for intelligent services, the sixth-generation (6G) wireless networks will shift from a traditional architecture that focuses solely on a high transmission rate to a new architecture that is based on the intelligent connection of everything. Semantic communication (SemCom), a revolutionary architecture that integrates user as well as application requirements and the meaning of information into data processing and transmission, is predicted to become a new core paradigm in 6G. While SemCom is expected to progress beyond the classical Shannon paradigm, several obstacles need to be overcome on the way to a SemCom-enabled smart wireless Internet. In this paper, we first highlight the motivations and compelling reasons of SemCom in 6G. Then, we provide an overview of SemCom-related theory development. After that, we introduce three types of SemCom, i.e., semantic-oriented communication, goal-oriented communication, and semantic-aware communication. Following that, we organize the design of the communication system into three dimensions, i.e., semantic information (SI) extraction, SI transmission, and SI metrics. For each dimension, we review existing techniques and discuss their benefits and limitation, as well as the remaining challenges. Then, we introduce the potential applications of SemCom in 6G and portray the vision of future SemCom-empowered network architecture. Finally, we outline future research opportunities. In a nutshell, this paper provides a holistic review of the fundamentals of SemCom, its applications in 6G networks, and the existing challenges and open issues with insights for further in-depth investigations. Synthesizing controllers directly from frequency-domain measurement data is a powerful tool in the linear time-invariant framework. Ever-increasing performance requirements necessitate extending these approaches to account for plant variations. The aim of this paper is to develop frequency-domain analysis and synthesis conditions for local internal stability and H∞-performance of single-input single-output linear parameter-varying systems. The developed synthesis procedure only requires frequency-domain measurement data of the system and does not need a parametric model of the plant. The capabilities of the synthesis procedure are demonstrated on an unstable nonlinear system. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. All rights reserved.

A Network Intrusion Detection System (NIDS) is a network security technology for detecting intruder attacks. However, it produces a great amount of low-level alerts which makes the analysis difficult, especially to construct the attack scenarios. Attack scenario construction (ASC) via Alert Correlation (AC) is important to reveal the strategy of attack in terms of steps and stages that need to be launched to make the attack successful. In most of the existing works, alerts are correlated by classifying the alerts based on the cause-effect relationship. However, the drawback of these works is the identification of false and incomplete correlations due to infiltration of raw alerts. To address this problem, this work proposes an effective ASC model to discover the complete relationship among alerts. The model is successfully experimented using two types of dataset, which are DARPA 2000, and ISCX2012. The primary goal of any company is to increase its profits by improving both the quality of its products and how they are advertised. In this context, neuromarketing seeks to enhance the promotion of products and generate a greater acceptance on potential buyers. Traditionally, neuromarketing studies have relied on a single biosignal to obtain feedback from presented stimuli. However, thanks to new devices and technological advances studying this area of knowledge, recent trends indicate a shift towards the fusion of diverse biosignals. An example is the usage of electroencephalography for understanding the impact of an advertisement at the neural level and visual tracking to identify the stimuli that induce such impacts. This emerging pattern determines which biosignals to employ for achieving specific neuromarketing objectives. Furthermore, the fusion of data from multiple sources demands advanced processing methodologies. Despite these complexities, there is a lack of literature that adequately collates and organizes the various data sources and the applied processing techniques for the research objectives pursued. To address these challenges, the current paper conducts a comprehensive analysis of the objectives, biosignals, and data processing techniques employed in neuromarketing research. This study provides both the technical definition and a graphical distribution of the elements under revision. Additionally, it presents a categorization based on research objectives and provides an overview of the combinatory methodologies employed. After this, the paper examines primary public datasets designed for neuromarketing research together with others whose main purpose is not neuromarketing, but can be used for this matter. Ultimately, this work provides a historical perspective on the evolution of techniques across various phases over recent years and enumerates key lessons learned. © 2022, CC BY-NC-SA.

Intelligent surface optimization in Terahertz under two manifestations of molecular re-radiation

The operation of Terahertz (THz) communication can be significantly impacted by the interaction between the transmitted wave and the molecules in the atmosphere. In particular, it has been observed experimentally that the signal undergoes not only molecular absorption, but also molecular re-radiation. Two extreme modeling assumptions are prevalent in the literature, where the re-radiated energy is modeled in the first as additive Gaussian noise and in the second as a scattered component strongly correlated to the actual signal. Since the exact characterization is still an open problem, we provide in this paper the first comparative study of the performance of a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted THz system under these two extreme models of re-radiation. In particular, we employ an RIS to overcome the large pathloss by creating a virtual line-of-sight (LOS) path. We then develop an optimization framework for this setup and utilize the block-coordinate descent (BCD) method to iteratively optimize both RIS configuration vector and receive beamforming weight resulting in significant throughput gains for the user of interest compared to random RIS configurations. Our results reveal that a slightly better throughput is achieved under the scattering assumption for the molecular re-radiation than the noise assumption. Copyright © 2021, The Authors. A joint research project “real-time lightning 3D imaging and forecasting project for sustainable and reliable supply of energy and storm disaster early warning” has been selected for Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS) program. Held in the coastal area of the Straits of Malacca in Malaysia, which suffers from serious lightning disasters with more than 200 lightning days per year, this research aims to contribute to disaster prevention by forecasting lightning strikes by constructing the world’s highest lightning observation network. This research project is to conduct the field campaigns associated with artificial rocket-triggered lightning in the coastal area of the Straits of Malacca, where the thunderstorm activity is very high and there are many positive cloud-to-ground flashes that may damage electric, communication and other equipments. Measurements of radio waves in various frequency bands and high-energy radiations, and several Rogowski coils are set up surrounding the strike points. It is planned to realize an electromagnetic field observation network in VHF and LF bands to observe the entire progression of each lightning in detail in a wide area. 3D charge distribution in the thundercloud and the amounts of neutralized charges estimated from the information where the lightning discharge begins, how it progresses, and where it terminates. Then, it is examined by the lightning current waveform measured directly with the high structure and rocket-triggered lightning. By comprehensively grasping the charge behavior in the air related to lightning discharge, it is possible to estimate the charge distribution in the cloud and to predict lightning strike. In addition, promoting the control of electric power equipment using IoT, and the early warning system of severe weather disasters to be implemented in the society.
