Smart manufacturing is realizing the idea and potential of Industry 4.0 in reality. An essential part of smart manufacturing are production facilities that dynamically adapt to changing production needs. This brings completely new challenges to functional safety systems, which are mandatory for the protection of man, machine, and environment. Currently, functional safety systems are designed and certified in a static way. The safety design and the configuration are derived from the risk assessment which is performed during the design of a machine. Once the system is put into operation, the safety configuration is not changed anymore. This approach constitutes an impediment to flexibility which smart manufacturing production facilities require *** paper proposes the design of a self-organizing safety system with the objective to assist an engineer who operates a smart manufacturing facility by discovering all safety-related devices and generating automatically a suitable safety configuration. This configuration will be deployed to the system automatically after adaptation and validation by the safety engineer. The proposed self-organizing safety system, simplifies the safety configuration in a dynamically changing environment. Consequently, it would reduce engineering efforts and decrease machine downtime which improves profitability.

In the era of global digitalization, digital innovation hubs have become essential, as they function as transforming forces. In this paper, we provide an analysis of the Montenegrin Academic Digital Innovation Hub by applying multi-criteria qualitative evaluation over several criteria: process flow of fully digitized operations of the Hub (with aspects of the innovation life-cycle, ethics, and security), resource management, strategic goals, and feasibility. The paper also proposes a model of comprehensive resource management via the perspective of smart specialization priorities of Montenegro.

Continuous-time fitted value iteration for robust policies

Solving the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation is important in many domains including control, robotics and economics. Especially for continuous control, solving this differential equation and its extension the Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs equation, is important as it yields the optimal policy that achieves the maximum reward on a give task. In the case of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Isaacs equation, which includes an adversary controlling the environment and minimizing the reward, the obtained policy is also robust to perturbations of the dynamics. In this paper we propose continuous fitted value iteration (cFVI) and robust fitted value iteration (rFVI). These algorithms leverage the non-linear control-affine dynamics and separable state and action reward of many continuous control problems to derive the optimal policy and optimal adversary in closed form. This analytic expression simplifies the differential equations and enables us to solve for the optimal value function using value iteration for continuous actions and states as well as the adversarial case. Notably, the resulting algorithms do not require discretization of states or actions. We apply the resulting algorithms to the Furuta pendulum and cartpole. We show that both algorithms obtain the optimal policy. The robustness Sim2Real experiments on the physical systems show that the policies successfully achieve the task in the real-world. When changing the masses of the pendulum, we observe that robust value iteration is more robust compared to deep reinforcement learning algorithm and the non-robust version of the algorithm. With the advancement of information technology in the recent decades, digital and online services have become essential components of everyday life in Europe. Montenegro is no different in this regard. However, as digital literacy in the country is still in a developing phase in comparison with most countries of the EU, a higher portion of its citizens may rely on assistive technical communication. In this paper, we provide a case study on the assistive technical communication of Montenegrin eServices. The work addresses the sectors of online banking, healthcare services, higher education, national administrative services, and utilities. Our findings highlight the diversity in terms of implemented assistive technical communication, and distinguish usage contexts on the level of adequacy. Yet as the functionalities of Montenegrin eServices are expected to gradually expand in the upcoming years, assistive technical communication must aim to handle the higher extents of service complexity.

As circuits continue to miniaturize, noise has become a significant obstacle to performance optimization. Stochastic resonance in logic circuits offers an innovative approach to harness noise constructively;however, current implementations are limited to basic logical functions such as OR, AND, NOR, and NAND, restricting broader applications. This paper introduces a three-dimensional (3D) coupling model to investigate the counterintuitive phenomena that arise in nonlinear systems under noise. Compared to the one-dimensional Langevin equation and the two-dimensional Duffing equation, the 3D coupling model features more adjustable parameters and coupling interactions, enhancing the system's dynamic behavior. The study demonstrates that increasing noise intensity triggers reverse aperiodic resonance, leading to signal phase reversal and amplitude amplification. This phenomenon is attributed to the motion of Brownian particles in a bistable potential well. Additionally, reverse aperiodic resonance addresses the lack of logical negation in traditional stochastic resonance systems by introducing noise-driven phase reversal, providing a novel alternative to conventional inverters. © 2024, CC BY.

The digital transformation of production requires new methods of data integration and storage, as well as decision making and support systems that work vertically and horizontally throughout the development, production, and use cycle. In this paper, we propose Data-to-Knowledge (and Knowledge-to-Data) pipelines for production as a universal concept building on a network of Digital Shadows (a concept augmenting Digital Twins). We show a proof of concept that builds on and bridges existing infrastructure to 1) capture and semantically annotates trajectory data from multiple similar but independent robots in different organisations and use cases in a data lakehouse and 2) an independent process that dynamically queries matching data for training an inverse dynamics foundation model for robotic control. The article discusses the challenges and benefits of this approach and how Data-to-Knowledge pipelines contribute efficiency gains and industrial scalability in a World Wide Lab as a research outlook. Autonomous systems use independent decisionmaking with only limited human intervention to accomplish goals in complex and unpredictable environments. As the autonomy technologies that underpin them continue to advance, these systems will find their way into an increasing number of applications in an ever wider range of settings. If we are to deploy them to perform safety-critical or mission-critical roles, it is imperative that we have justified confidence in their safe and correct operation. Verification is the process by which such confidence is established. However, autonomous systems pose challenges to existing verification practices. This paper highlights viewpoints of the Roadmap Working group of the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society Technical Committee for Verification of Autonomous systems, identifying these grand challenges, and providing a vision for future research efforts that will be needed to address them. © 2024, CC BY.

Recently, the performance of Pre-trained Language Models (PLMs) has been significantly improved by injecting knowledge facts to enhance their abilities of language understanding. For medical domains, the background knowledge sources are especially useful, due to the massive medical terms and their complicated relations are difficult to understand in text. In this work, we introduce SMedBERT, a medical PLM trained on large-scale medical corpora, incorporating deep structured semantics knowledge from neighbours of linked-entity. In SMedBERT, the mention-neighbour hybrid attention is proposed to learn heterogeneousentity information, which infuses the semantic representations of entity types into the homogeneous neighbouring entity structure. Apart from knowledge integration as external features, we propose to employ the neighbors of linked-entities in the knowledge graph as additional global contexts of text mentions, allowing themto communicate via shared neighbors, thus enrich their semantic representations. Experiments demonstrate that SMedBERT significantly outperforms strong baselines in various knowledge-intensive Chinese medical tasks.
