Industrial Cyber-Physical Systems (ICPSs) are an integral component of modern manufacturing and industries. By digitizing data throughout product life cycles, Digital Twins (DTs) in ICPSs enable a shift from current industrial infrastructures to intelligent and adaptive infrastructures. Thanks to data process capability, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) can drive the construction and update of DTs to improve predictive accuracy and prepare for diverse smart manufacturing. However, mechanisms that leverage Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) devices to share sensing data for DT construction are susceptible to adverse selection problems. In this paper, we first develop a GenAI-driven DT architecture in ICPSs. To address the adverse selection problem caused by information asymmetry, we propose a contract theory model and develop a sustainable diffusion-based soft actor-critic algorithm to identify the optimal feasible contract. Specifically, we leverage dynamic structured pruning techniques to reduce parameter numbers of actor networks, allowing sustainability and efficient implementation of the proposed algorithm. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme and the algorithm, enabling efficient DT construction and updates to monitor and manage ICPSs. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper introduces Robotic Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (rCBT) as a novel approach to overcoming the limitations of traditional Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) in treating emotional and psychological issues. After a brief overview of CBT and its inherent challenges, this paper explores the innovative application of physical robots in therapy, building on the success of technology-based CBT methods that have effectively treated various mental health conditions. The proposed rCBT solution is a compact, portable, and cost-effective 3D-printed robot designed to aid individuals with anxiety or depression. This robot includes interactive features such as a diary, health questionnaires, daily mood monitoring, to-do lists, mindfulness exercises, and a crisis helpline, enabling users to track their emotional states and activities. These functions support healthcare professionals and users in identifying emotional patterns and triggers. The robot can monitor physiological signals like heart rate. This research aims to enhance the accessibility and effectiveness of CBT, suggesting that rCBT could significantly broaden the therapy’s reach and improve mental health outcomes for a larger population. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

This paper investigates the barriers hindering the effective transition from theoretical knowledge to practical application in a Sino-New Zealand double-degree undergraduate computing programme. In this unique educational setting, students study at a campus in China but complete both Chinese and New Zealand courses taught jointly by lecturers from both countries. Through a questionnaire administered to these students, we identify critical obstacles such as insufficient foundational knowledge, language barriers, cultural and pedagogical differences, and difficulties adapting to distinct educational systems. Our analysis reveals that these barriers significantly affect students’ academic performance, engagement, and skill development. Based on the findings, we propose targeted interventions, including specialized bridging courses, enhanced language support, refined teaching methods, and improved resource allocation. Cross-Modal Knowledge Diffusion-Based Generation for Difference-Aware Medical VQA

Multimodal medical applications have garnered considerable attention due to their potential to offer comprehensive and robust support for medical assistance. Specifically, within this domain, difference-aware medical Visual Question Answering (VQA) has emerged as a topic of increasing interest that enables the recognition of changes in physical conditions over time when compared to previous states and provides customized suggestions accordingly. However, it is challenging because samples usually exhibit characteristics of complexity, diversity, and inherent noise. Besides, there is a need for multimodal knowledge understanding of the medical domain. The difference-aware setting requiring image comparison further intensifies these situations. To this end, we propose a cross-Modal knowlEdge diffusioN-baseD gEneration netwoRk (MENDER), where the diffusion mechanism with multi-step denoising and knowledge injection from global to local level are employed to tackle the aforementioned challenges, respectively. The diffusion process is to gradually generate answers with the sequence input of questions, random noises for the answer masks and virtual vision prompts of images. The strategy of answer nosing and knowledge cascading is specifically tailored for this task and is implemented during forward and reverse diffusion processes. Moreover, the visual and structure knowledge injection are proposed to learn virtual vision prompts to guide the diffusion process, where the former is realized using a pre-trained medical image-text network and the latter is modeled with spatial and semantic graph structures processed by the heterogeneous graph Transformer models. Experiment results demonstrate the effectiveness of MENDER for difference-aware medical VQA. Furthermore, it also exhibits notable performance in the low-resource setting and conventional medical VQA tasks. © 1992-2012 IEEE.

The evolution from 1G to 6G networks has transformed global communication, progressing from basic voice calls in 1G to the immersive, AI-enabled experiences of 6G. As emerging AI-driven applications like autonomous systems, the Internet of Everything (IoE), and immersive technologies demand unprecedented capabilities, 7G networks are set to redefine connectivity by overcoming the limitations of earlier generations. This paper comprehensively reviews the innovations and challenges in 7G networks, focusing on integrating advanced AI and machine learning paradigms such as meta-learning, incremental learning, distributed intelligence, and reinforcement learning to enhance adaptability, resource allocation, and edge performance. The review also examines the role of Large Language Models (LLMs) in enabling real-time actionable intelligence and optimizing edge devices within 7G. The paper highlights the use of technologies, including blockchain for decentralized security, quantum computing for robust encryption, terahertz communication for ultra-fast data transfer, zero-energy solutions for sustainability, and generative AI for intelligent network optimization and automation. By addressing these challenges and exploring cutting-edge strategies, this paper envisions 7G networks as the foundation for a secure, intelligent, and sustainable digital future, equipped to combat emerging cyber warfare threats, enhance resilience against technological disruptions, and support innovations across smart cities, autonomous systems, healthcare, and industrial IoT. © 2020 IEEE.

Capsule network is a new type of neural network encoding features into capsules and constructing the part-whole relationships, which demonstrated good performance in image classification. However, it has some issues such as weak feature extraction ability and large number of training parameters, leading to performance decline when processing images with complex background. To address these issues, this article proposes a novel capsule network structure called STB-GraCapsNet, with key improvements as follows: 1) It uses Swin Transformer Block with the shift window attention mechanism for data preprocessing to obtain richer features;2) the features are then processed through Linear Embedding and passed into the Primary Capsule Layer to generate high-dimension feature capsules, which reduces primary capsules number and improves feature extraction ability of the network. Ablation and comparative experiments based on multiple datasets show that STB-GraCapsNet performs better on complex datasets: 77.8% and 36.2% reduction in parameters number of capsule structure, and 12.07% and 5.22% improvement in model accuracy, as compared to CapsNet and GraCapsNet, respectively. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Salient Object Detection (SOD) aims to identify and segment the most striking elements within an image. Salient object detection methods can be differentiated into several types according to the input data, such as RGB-D (Depth) and RGB-T (Thermal). Previous research primarily focused on saliency detection for single data types. However, forcing an RGB-D SOD model to process RGB-T data will degrade its performance significantly. In addition, current methods still face challenges in detecting fine edge details of salient objects and achieving end-to-end training. To address these issues, we introduce diffSOD, which leverages stable diffusion and cross-modal feature rectification and fusion module for saliency detection by transforming salient object detection into a denoising process from a noisy mask to an object mask. It offers a unified solution for salient object detection that seamlessly spans both RGB-D SOD and RGB-T SOD. Extensive experiments validate the effectiveness of the proposed diffSOD, demonstrating its ability to efficiently detect salient objects across both RGB-D and RGB-T data, while achieving superior performance over state-of-the-art methods. © 2025 IEEE.

There is growing research interest in measuring the statistical heterogeneity of clients’ local datasets. Such measurements are used to estimate the suitability for collaborative training of personalized federated learning (PFL) models. Currently, these research endeavors are taking place in silos and there is a lack of a unified benchmark to provide a fair and convenient comparison among various approaches in common settings. We aim to bridge this important gap in this paper. The proposed benchmarking framework currently includes six representative approaches. Extensive experiments have been conducted to compare these approaches under five standard non-IID FL settings, providing much needed insights into which approaches are advantageous under which settings. The proposed framework offers useful guidance on the suitability of various data divergence measures in FL systems. It is beneficial for keeping related research activities on the right track in terms of: (1) designing PFL schemes, (2) selecting appropriate data heterogeneity evaluation approaches for specific FL application scenarios, and (3) addressing fairness issues in collaborative model training. Background: The automated classification of videos through artificial neural networks is addressed in this work. To explore the concepts and measure the results, the data set UCF101 is used, consisting of video clips taken from YouTube to recognize actions. The study is carried out with the authors' resources to determine the feasibility of independent research in the area. Methods: This work was developed in the Python programming language using the Keras library with Tensorflow as the back-end. The objective is to develop a network that presents performance compatible with the state of the art in terms of classifying videos according to the actions taken. Results: Given the hardware limitations, there is considerable distance between the implementation possibilities in this work and what is known as the state-of-the-art. Conclusion: Throughout the work, some aspects in which this limitation influenced the development are presented, but it is shown that this realization is feasible and that obtaining expressive results is possible 98.6% accuracy is obtained in the UCF101 data set, compared to the 98 percentage points of the best result ever reported, using, however, considerably fewer resources. In addition, the importance of transfer learning in achieving expressive results as well as the different performances of each architecture are reviewed. Thus, this work may open doors to carry patent-based outcomes. © 2025 Bentham science Publishers.

ReflexGest: Recognizing Hand Gestures under VLC-Capable Lamps

As a main approach towards touch-free human-computer interaction, hand gesture recognition (HGR) has long been a research focus for both academia and industry. Meanwhile, visible light communication (VLC) has become increasingly popular with VLC-ready commercial products (e.g., Philips lamps) available on the market. These facts provoke us to ask: can we leverage a VLC-ready lamp to realize integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) by conducting both HGR and VLC simultaneously? To this end, we propose ReflexGest as our answer to this question. ReflexGest is implemented upon a table lamp for the sake of practicality;this VLC-ready lamp is equipped with a ring-shaped light-emitting diode (LED) array and a photodiode (PD, for light intensity sensing) originally aiming for up/down-link VLCs. Demanding hand gestures to be performed between the lamp and a table surface, ReflexGest exploits the variation of the reflection and their unique correlation with the corresponding hand gestures to achieve HGR. In particular, ReflexGest first handles the limited sensing ability of the PD by enhancing the LED lamp and thus diversifying the light emission patterns. Moreover, ReflexGest combats the reflection interference from varying table surfaces via an adversarial learning technique to distill only the features relevant to hand gestures. Our extensive evaluations demonstrate that ReflexGest is able to deliver accurate HGR under realistic VLC traffic. © 2002-2012 IEEE.
