This paper presents a new approach, which we call UFL-ELM, to classification using both unsupervised and supervised learning. Unlike traditional approaches in which features are extracted, hand-crafted, and then trained using time consuming, iterated optimization, this proposed method leverages unsupervised feature learning to learn features from the data themselves and then train the classifier using an extreme learning machine to reach the analytic solution. The result is therefore widely and quickly applied to universal data. Experiments on a large dataset of images confirm the ease of use and speed of training of this unsupervised feature learning approach. Furthermore, the paper discusses how to speed up training, using massively parallel programming.

Load tests ensure that software systems are able to perform under the expected workloads. The current state of load test analysis requires significant manual review of performance counters and execution logs, and a high degree of system-specific expertise. In particular, memory-related issues (e.g., memory leaks or spikes), which may degrade performance and cause crashes, are difficult to diagnose. Performance analysts must correlate hundreds of megabytes or gigabytes of performance counters (to understand resource usage) with execution logs (to understand system behaviour). However, little work has been done to combine these two types of information to assist performance analysts in their diagnosis. We propose an automated approach that combines performance counters and execution logs to diagnose memory-related issues in load tests. We perform three case studies on two systems: one open-source system and one large-scale enterprise system. Our approach flags ≤ 0.1% of the execution logs with a precision ≥ 80%.

This work brings two new contributions. First, it introduces the Scaled Minimum Unscented Multiple Hypotheses Mixing Filter, a novel filter for hybrid dynamical systems that 1) uses a new minimum set of sigma points along with the scaled unscented transform in a hybrid framework;2) can estimate the Markovian Transition Probability Matrix in real-time;3) features a pruning step that reduces the filter's computational effort and prevents its estimates from being degraded by very unlikely hypotheses;and 4) has a mixing step with merging depth greater than one. Second, we present a result revealing the conservativeness of one of the scaled unscented transform forms.

The emergency of cloud computing and Generic Enablers (GEs) as the building blocks of Future Internet (FI) applications highlights new requirements in the area of cloud services. Though, due to the current restrictions of various certification standards related with privacy and safety of health related data, the utilization of cloud computing in such area has been in many instances unlawful. Here, we focus on demonstrating a “software to data” provisioning solution to propose a mapping of FI application use case requirements to software specifications (using GEs). The aim is to establish a provider to consumer cloud setting wherein no sensitive data will be exchanged but it will reside at the back-end site. We propose a prototype architecture that covers the cloud management layer and the operational features that manage data and Internet of Things devices. To show a real life scenario, we present the use case of the diabetes care and a FI application that includes various GEs.

In our prior work, we proposed the IQ-ASyMTRe architecture with a measure of information quality to reason about forming coalitions in multirobot tasks. The formed coalitions are guaranteed to be executable, given the current configurations of the robots and environment. A cost and a quality measure are associated with each coalition to further determine its utility for the task. In this paper, we show that IQ-ASyMTRe-like architectures can be utilized to significantly reduce the overall complexity of task allocation by considering only executable coalitions. For implementation, we apply a layering technique such that most existing methods for task allocation can be easily incorporated. Furthermore, we introduce a general process to address situations in which no executable coalitions are available for certain tasks, and integrate it with IQ-ASyMTRe to achieve more autonomy. Such an approach is able to autonomously decompose unsatisfied preconditions of the required task behaviors into satisfiable components, in order to generate partial order plans for them accordingly. We show how this process can be implemented using a market-based approach. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate these techniques.

The task of Chinese word segmentation is to split sequence of Chinese characters into tokens so that the Chinese information can be more easily retrieved by web search engine. Due to the dramatic increase in the amount of Chinese literature in recent years, it becomes a big challenge for web search engines to analyze massive Chinese information in time. In this paper, we investigate a new approach to high-performance Chinese information processing. We propose a CPU-GPU collaboration model for Chinese word segmentation. In our novel model, a dictionary-based word segmentation approach is proposed to fit GPU architecture. Three basic word segmentation algorithms are applied to evaluate the performance of this model. In addition, we present several optimization strategies to fully exploit the potential computing power of GPU. Our experimental results show that our model can achieve significant performance speedups up to 3-fold compared with the implementations on CPU. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

This paper proposes a hierarchical and probabilistic approach for interframe motion estimation to eliminate unwanted camera motions. This approach adopts three hierarchies, local motion estimation, region motion estimation, and global motion estimation. The local motion is described as a probability distribution for randomly selected local patches. The region motion is defined as maximum likelihood solution using the local motions in certain area, and the region motion estimator can reduce the influence of outliers such as moving objects. The global motion is obtained from homography estimation by using the region motions. Through experiments, the effectiveness of the proposed method is shown in the sense of robustness and computation. © 2011 IEEE.

We propose a realtime and direct-touch interaction system for 3D cultural artifact exhibition based on a texture-based haptic rendering technique. In the field of digital archive, it is important to archive and exhibit the cultural artifact at the high-definition. To archive the shape, color and texture of the cultural artifact, it is important to archive and represent not only visual effect but haptic impression. Therefore, multimodal digital archiving, realtime multisensory rendering, and intuitive and immersive exhibition system are necessary. Therefore, we develop a realtime and direct-touch interaction system for the 3D cultural artifact exhibition based on a texture-based haptic rendering technique. In our system, the viewer can directly touch a stereoscopic vision of 3D digital archived cultural artifact with the string-based and scalable haptic interface device "SPIDAR" and vibration motor. © 2011 Springer-Verlag.

Among several techniques proposed for indoor positioning using IEEE 802.11 Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) based networks, those that rely on fingerprinting have been demonstrated to outperform those based on lateration, angulation, and cell of origin in terms of accuracy. We compare and evaluate three Wi-Fi fingerprinting techniques that use the K-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), Naive Bayes Classifier (NBC) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) algorithms. Our experiments show that SVM-based fingerprinting outperformed both k-NN and NBC-based fingerprinting, achieving accuracies of 2 meters or better within our testbed. © 2011 IEEE.
