TCP can perform badly in high speed networks with large delays because of its slow response with large congestion windows. In this paper, we propose time based TCP (TBTCP for short), a simple and novel time based technique, wherein, the congestion window increase rate is adaptively adjusted based on time intervals between two consecutive losses instead of current window size or sending rate. We first provide general framework for TBTCP protocol. Then, a simplified design is given and the scalability of TBTCP is illustrated. We analyze the RTT unfairness with the chosen design and show that the RTT unfairness of TBTCP can be firmly guaranteed to be no worse than that of unmodified TCP. A whole class of design options is provided by this flexible framework to improve the performance of TCP in high speed networks with large delays

Today, we witness a transformation of radio access network topologies from strictly tree-structured towards meshed architectures. Yet, these edge networks follow mostly circuit-switched paradigms to support quality of service applications such as voice or video communication. In this work, we develop a novel quality of service aware routing framework to optimize the performance of edge networks in the packet-switched domain. Starting from the Internet's best-effort routing paradigm and building on related work, we formulate a near-optimal multiclass minimum-delay routing algorithm. Our algorithm optimizes network-wide end-to-end delay and allows for differentiation of service. We exploit two orthogonal dimensions namely multipath routing and class-based service prioritization. We provide a precise description of our algorithm and a detailed experimental analysis against state of the art routing algorithms. Our algorithm is able to achieve excellent performance while maintaining the simplicity of a decentralized and distributed routing algorithm, thus matching the requirements for future radio access networks. © 2005 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a new multimedia data mining framework for the extraction of soccer goal events in soccer videos by using combined multimodal analysis and decision tree logic. The extracted events can be used to index the soccer videos. We first adopt an advanced video shot detection method to produce shot boundaries and some important visual features. Then the visual/audio features are extracted for each shot at different granularities. This rich multi-modal feature set is filtered by a pre-filtering step to clean the noise as well as to reduce the irrelevant data. A decision tree model is built upon the cleaned data set and is used to classify the goal shots. Finally, the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework for soccer goal extraction.

This work proposes a new kind of evolutionary algorithm inspired in the principles of quantum computing. This algorithm is an extension of a proposed model for combinatorial optimization problems which uses a binary representation for the chromosome. This extension uses probability distributions for each free variable of the problem, in order to simulate the superposition of solutions, which is intrinsic in the quantum computing methodology. A set of mathematical operations is used as implicit genetic operators over those probability distributions. The efficiency and the applicability of the algorithm are demonstrated through experimental results using the F6 function. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

This paper is about the optimization of beamforming weights in the nonlinear array antenna system. We consider the multi-objective optimization using the evolutionary algorithm. First, we constrain two variables - the width of the main-lobe, the level of the side-lobe. Second, we constrain an additional variable, the energy of beamforming weights, on the former system. In each case, we compute the costs of beamforming weights in each generation. At the end of generations, we can get the Pareto frontier which means the optimal solution set. To demonstrate the performance of the proposed optimization, we compare the results between the proposed algorithm and the conventional window method.

To make the transition from a technological curiosity to productive tools, humanoid robots will require key advances in many areas, including, mechanical design, sensing, embedded avionics, power, and navigation. Using the NASA Johnson Space Center's Robonaut as a testbed, the DARPA mobile autonomous robot software (MARS) humanoids team is investigating technologies that will enable humanoid robots to work effectively with humans and autonomously work with tools. A novel learning approach is being applied that enables the robot to learn both from a remote human teleoperating the robot and an adjacent human giving instruction. When the remote human performs tasks teleoperatively, the robot learns the salient sensory-motor features to executing the task. Once learned, the task may be carried out fusing the skills required to perform the task, guided by on-board sensing. The adjacent human takes advantage of previously learned skills to sequence the execution of these skills. Preliminary results from initial experiments using a drill to tighten lug nuts on a wheel are discussed.

This paper reviews research on multi-lingual conversational systems conducted during the five-year collaboration between NTT and MIT. It describes the development of Mokusei, a telephone-based Japanese conversational system in the weather domain, and Japanese SpeechBuilder, a toolkit that enables nonexperts to build Japanese conversational systems. Both are based on the Galaxy conversational systems architecture. The experience gained by developing these systems demonstrates that the Galaxy architecture is a viable framework for multi-lingual conversational system research.

Faraway engineers are able to sketch direct the shape of engineering components by the browser, and the recognition system will proceed with search for the component database of company by the Internet. In this paper, component patterns are stored in the database system. Component patterns with the approach of database system will be able to improve the capacity of recognition system effectively. In our approach, the recognition system adopts distributed compute, and it will raise the recognition rate of system. The system uses a recurrent neural network (RNN) with associative memory to perform the action of training and recognition. The final phase joins the technology of database match in process of the recognition except distributed compute, and it will solve the problem of spurious state. In this paper, our system will be carried out in the Yang-Fen Automation electrical engineering Company. The plan of experiment has gone through four months, and their engineers are also used to take advantage of the way of Web-Based pattern recognition. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

This paper describes several methods for using the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) as the visualization integration technology for manufacturing simulation systems. One of our goals was to develop an integration methodology based on the Web-Elased Manufacturing translators to produce reusable VRML assembly components and Simulation. Virtual Reality {VR) can be handled as improved animation operated by a simulation system. Manufacturing basically comprises some basic classes of engineering tasks, these tasks could benefit from the application of VR through the high-fidelity visualizations, providing model and situation representation in the 3D space, and the power of interactive handling of large data sets in real-time or near real-time. The underlying principles of VR via VRML are described and applications in design and manufacturing tasks are illustrated by assembly planning and intelligent robotic examples. The final, we propose Robotic-Simulator software design and a framework for the Web-Based Manufacturing Simulation. © 2002 IEEE.
