Local image descriptors have proved themselves as useful tools for many computer vision tasks such as matching points between multiple images of a scene and object recognition. Current descriptors, such as SIFT, are designed to match image features with unique local neighborhoods. However, the interest point detectors used with SIFT often fail to select perceptible local structures in the image, and the SIFT descriptor does not directly encode the local neighborhood shape. In this paper we propose a symmetry based interest point detector and radial local structure descriptor which consistently captures the majority of basic local image structures and provides a geometrical description of the structure boundaries. This approach concentrates on the extraction of shape properties in image patches, which are an intuitive way to represent local appearance for matching and classification. We explore the specificity and sensitivity of this local descriptor in the context of classification of natural patterns. The implications of the performance comparison with standard approaches like SIFT are discussed.

This paper presents a hybrid approach towards self-localization of tiny autonomous mobile robots in a known but highly dynamic environment. The proposed algorithm is intended for two-wheeled differential drive robots which are equipped with a pivoted stereo vision system, two digital encoders, a gyro sensor, two 10g accelerometers and a magnetic compass. The global position of the robot can be estimated by extracting two distinct landmarks from the robot environment and measuring their range and orientation using the stereo vision system. However, distinct landmarks are not available through the entire state space and it is required to track the robot position once a global estimate is available. Tracking of the globally estimated position is performed within the framework of extended Kalman filter. Constant monitoring of the robot observation enables it to detect any unexpected situation. Simulation results show that robot can successfully localize itself at startup and is capable of detecting and recovering from localization failures.

Osteoarthritis is a chronic and crippling disease affecting an increasing number of people each year. With no known cure, it is expected to reach epidemic proportions in the near future. Accurate segmentation of knee cartilage from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans facilitates the measurement of cartilage volume present in a patient's knee, thus enabling medical clinicians to detect the onset of osteoarthritis and also crucially, to study its effects. This paper compares four model-based segmentation methods popular for medical data segmentation, namely Active Shape Models (ASM) (Cootes et al., 1995), Active Appearance Models (AAM) (Cootes et al., 2001), Patch-based Active Appearance Models (PAAM) (Faggian et al., 2006), and Active Feature Models (AFM) (Langs et al., 2006). A comprehensive analysis of how accurately these methods segment human tibial cartilage is presented. The results obtained were benchmarked against the current "gold standard" (cartilage segmented manually by trained clinicians) and indicate that modeling local texture features around each landmark provides the best results for segmenting human tibial cartilage.

This paper describes a real-time multi-camera surveillance system that can be applied to a range of application domains. This integrated system is designed to observe crowded scenes and has mechanisms to improve tracking of objects that are in close proximity. The four component modules described in this paper are (i) motion detection using a layered background model, (ii)object tracking based on local appearance, (iii) hierarchical object recognition, and (iv) fused multisensor object tracking using multiple features and geometric constraints. This integrated approach to complex scene tracking is validated against a number of representative real-world scenarios to show that robust, real-time analysis can be performed. We formulate single-image multi-label segmentation into regions coherent in texture and color as a MAX-SUM problem for which efficient linear programming based solvers have recently appeared. By handling more than two labels, we go beyond widespread binary segmentation methods, e.g., MIN-CUT or normalized cut based approaches. We show that the MAX-SUM solver is a very powerful tool for obtaining the MAP estimate of a Markov random field (MRF). We build the MRF on superpixels to speed up the segmentation while preserving color and texture. We propose new quality functions for setting the MRF, exploiting priors from small representative image seeds, provided either manually or automatically. We show that the proposed automatic segmentation method outperforms previous techniques in terms of the global consistency error evaluated on the Berkeley segmentation database.

The endovascular repair of a traumatic rupture of the thoracic aorta - that would otherwise lead to the death of the patient - is performed by delivering a stent-graft into the vessel at the rupture location. The age range of the affected patients is large and the stent-graft will stay in the body for the remaining life. The technique is relatively new, and no experience with regard to long-term effects, and durability exists. To predict long-term complications, such as ruptures or destructive interactions with surrounding tissue during the life of the patient, it is important to understand the - rather intense and constant - movement of the stent- graft during the cardiac cycle. A computed tomography with heart gating (gated CT) acquires sequences that show the region of the stent-graft at different time points. We analyze the motion of stent-grafts with a model based approach. Stent-grafts are represented as sparse sets of axis points extracted from the gated CT, and motion patterns are captured by a minimum description length based group-wise registration of the stent-graft at different time points. No parameterization or a priori definition of the topology is necessary, and highly variable elasticity properties in the data volume can by accounted for by the sparse statistical model, that captures correlations and motion components of the stent-graft. We report results for deformation models and registration accuracy for 5 patients.

Motivated by the requirements of the present archaeology, we are developing an automated system for archaeological classification and reconstruction of ceramics. This paper shows a method to answer archaeological questions about the manufacturing process of ancient ceramics, which is important to determine the technological advancement of ancient culture. The method is based on the estimation of the profile lines of ceramic fragments, which can also be applied to complete vessels. With the enhancements shown in this paper, archaeologists get a tool to determine ancient manufacturing techniques.

We present a method that partitions a single image into two layers, requiring that one layer has similar properties in terms of pixel colour variation to a provided template patch. First the paper provides a new view on defining a similarity function for a pixel with its small neighbourhood to be part of the texture described by the template patch. This results in better description of pixels near the texture boundary. Second, it is shown how the Maximally Stable Extremal Regions (MSERs), originally designed for wide baseline stereo matching, can be used to locally merge pixels having the same intensity and thus reduce the dimension of the graph representing the image. The MSERs help in texture description and yield significant reduction of memory and computation time. Finally the graph is fed into the ***/*** algorithm to cut the graph into two parts. Performance of the method is presented on some images from the Berkeley database. Finally, restrictions in using the method are discussed.

Cognitive Vision has to represent, reason and learn about objects in its environment it has to manipulate and react to. There are deformable objects like humans which cannot be described easily in simple geometric terms. In many cases they are composed of several pieces forming a "structured subset" of n or n. We introduce the potential topological representations for structured objects: plane graphs, combinatorial and generalized maps. They capture abstract spatial relations derived from geometry and enable reconstructions through attributing the relations by e.g. coordinates. In addition they offer the possibility to combine both topology and geometry in a hierarchical framework: irregular pyramids. The basic operations to construct these hierarchies are edge contraction and edge removal. We show preliminary results in using them to hold a whole set of segmentations of an image that enable reasoning and planning actions at various levels of detail down to a single pixel in a homogeneous way. We further speculate that the higher levels map the inherent structure of objects and can be used to integrate (and "learn") the specific object properties over time by up-projecting individual measurements. The construction of the hierarchies follows the philosophy to reduce the data amount at each higher level of the hierarchy by a reduction factor > 1 while preserving important topological properties like connectivity and inclusion. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2006.
