Infrared image simulation plays an important role in many fields. This paper presents a method for dynamic infrared image simulation under various natural conditions. Firstly, we analyze the infrared imaging rationale, considering various affected factors of temperature, radiance filed and atmospheric attenuation based on the heat transfer equation. Secondly, we present a reasonable simulation procedure based on the Vega Application Interface (API). Especially, a hybrid simulation idea is put forward and an improved strategy for different objects is carried out. The performance of this approach is evaluated by simulating two kinds of targets. Results show that the method proposed is valid compared with the real images under the same condition. In addition, this approach has relatively low calculation complexity but high fidelity, and satisfies the requirement of real time. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) is an important tool in digital signal processing. In this paper, a new algorithm to compute DWT is proposed: first, based on the previous work of performing discrete Fourier transform (DFT) via linear sums of discrete moments, we introduce a multiplierless DFT by performing appropriate bit operations and shift operations in binary system;then by convolution theorem, the computation is transformed to the computation of DFT. In addition, a efficient systolic array is designed to implement the DWT which is a demonstration of the locality of dataflow in the algorithms. The approach is also applicable to multi-dimensional DWT. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

A fast algorithm was proposed to decrease the computational cost of the contour extraction approach based on quantum mechanics. The contour extraction approach based on quantum mechanics is a novel method proposed recently by us, which will be presented on the same conference by another paper of us titled "a statistical approach to contour extraction based on quantum mechanics". In our approach, contour extraction was modeled as the locus of a moving particle described by quantum mechanics, which is obtained by the most probable locus of the particle simulated in a large number of iterations. In quantum mechanics, the probability that a particle appears at a point is equivalent to the square amplitude of the wave function. Furthermore, the expression of the wave function can be derived from digital images, making the probability of the locus of a particle available. We employed the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) method to estimate the square amplitude of the wave function. Finally, our fast quantum mechanics based contour extraction algorithm (referred as our fast algorithm hereafter) was evaluated by a number of different images including synthetic and medical images. It was demonstrated that our fast algorithm can achieve significant improvements in accuracy and robustness compared with the well-known state-of-the-art contour extraction techniques and dramatic reduction of time complexity compared to the statistical approach to contour extraction based on quantum mechanics. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

Research on the location of sea-sky line under infrared complicated sea-sky background has the important value to improve the capability of far target recognition. In a real sea-sky background infrared image, the sky and the sea normally appear in the form of different changes of grey-level on account of their different infrared radiation and reflection characteristics. So we can use the background complex degree to differentiate between the sky region and the sea region. In our method, an operator is employed to calculate the background complex degree of image. By filtering original infrared image with the operator, the grey-level contrast between the sky region and the sea region can be stronger than original image. After the complex degree calculation, the edge detection with only row directional gradient and Hough transform are utilized in succession, the sea-sky line can be located. Some typical sea-sky background infrared images are selected to validate our proposed method. The experimental results indicate that our sea-sky line location method is robust. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

The recent increase of space threats yields the idea of using the existing star trackers to perform surveillance of space objects from space. In the missions, due to the observer attitude dynamics, smearing affects the observed stars on the image in space surveillance. Besides, the reflecting flying space objects or debris as spurious stars affects the attitude determination. These are devastating for most star identification algorithms in star trackers. To resolve the problems, this paper defines a star pattern, called Flower code, which is composed of angular distances and circular angles as the characteristics of the pivot star. The angular distances are used for initial lookup table match. Moreover, the circular angles are used for the cyclic dynamic match between the sensor pattern and the pattern candidates from the initial match. The focus of the results is the evaluation of the influence of the reflecting flying spacecraft or debris as spurious stars and the attitude dynamics of the observer spacecraft, on the performance of the algorithms. A number of experiments are carried out on simulated images. The inertial navigation system (INS) is an efficient navigation method but it can occur accumulative errors. To correct this error in the INS, this paper presents a novel optical-flow aided navigation method by studying the terrain aided navigation, which can implement the continuous error estimation of the INS by employing the extended kalman filter that regards optical-flow as its measurement parameter. Therefore, this aided method is similar to the terrain aided navigation except that the measurement parameter and equation are both derived from optical-flow instead of terrain height. Experiments with some actual aerial image sequences have proven the efficiency of this aided navigation method. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

An autonomous star pattern recognition algorithm is proposed herein that is effectively stable against the higher level noise than other algorithms. In simulations using an 8×8 degree field of view (FOV), the algorithm identifies the correct section of sky on 99.5% of the sensor orientations where spatial accuracy of the imaged star is 2 pixels (0.03 degree) in standard deviation and the apparent brightness deviate by 0.5 units' stellar magnitude. The achievable performance comes from the generation of the Flower-code pattern, which includes angular distances and circular angles as the characteristics of the pivot star. The angular distances are used for initial lookup table match. Moreover, the circular angles are adopted for the cyclic dynamic match between the sensor pattern and the pattern candidates from the initial match. A novel algorithm is proposed in this paper to detect dim moving point target with several pixels size in infrared image sequence, taken by line scan camera in high speed moving platform, with heavy background clutter and distortion. In the algorithm, the regional information of candidate points, which are extracted from the images after background suppression by spatial filter, is employed to track candidate points. After tracking candidate points, the velocity of every candidate points can be calculated easily, and false candidate points which are extracted from clutter background, can be find out by velocity classification and removed. Then, Double Hough Transform is applied on associating the remnant candidate points in multi-frame sequence to detect the target. The algorithm can get a high detection probability and reduce false alarm rate dramatically. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

The 3-D moment invariants are introduced to solve the problem of recognition of 3-D objects independent of size, position, and orientation. In this paper, based on our previous systolic array for fast computation of 3-D moment, we propose a new global systolic array for fast computation of 3-D moment invariants. The systolic sarray mostly consists of adders with area complexity O(n) and are highly regular and structurally very simple, resulting in simple hardware implementation. The method is suitable for both binary images and gray level images and is also suitable for image sequence moments. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.

In this paper, a semi-fragile watermark solution based on quantization index modulation in the wavelet region was proposed. The algorithm employs a compressed halftoned binary image as watermark and embeds it in the wavelet domain through quantization index modulation, which can not only identify the authenticity of the content of digital image, but also recover the tampered image approximately. Because the watermark is a low-resolution original image, which carries the original image information, so the original image is not required when authenticating, and the tampered region can be recovered according to the watermark. The method can tolerate a certain degree of compression distortion or noise. Beside, a secret key is used to select the embedded watermark bits and their embedded positions to increase the security of watermarking. Experimental results show this semi-fragile watermarking algorithm is effective and practical for content authentication. © 2009 Copyright SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering.
