In practical applications, noise is more appropriately modelled as an a-stable random process than as a Gaussian process. To cope with a-stable noise, a fractional-order stochastic gradient descent (SGD) method is invented to adaptive filtering (AF) algorithms. When both input signal and noise follow α-stable random processes, the AF algorithms based on mean square error (MSE) criteria can be affected. Nevertheless, the fractional-order AF (FoAF) algorithm can effectively address this issue. For the purpose of better stability performance of the FoAF algorithm, different cost functions (CFs) are introduced into fractional-order SGD method. Based on the fractional-order derivative of a logarithmic CF (LCF), a fractional-order logarithmic adaptive filtering (FoLAF) algorithm is formed in this condition. Trials show that the FoLAF algorithm achieves faster convergence, excellent steady-state performance and superior tracking performance.

A simple broadband slotted circularly-polarized (CP) antenna (SBS-CP) is presented, which mainly consists of a ground structure with a modified slot and an asymmetric feeding structure. The two structures can give different CP characteristics in low and high frequencies. By etching rectangular slots in the ground structure, the coupling effect between feeding and ground structure will be improved and the bandwidth will be broadened. By modeling and optimizing the antenna, the proposed antenna impedance bandwidth (IBW) and axial ratio bandwidth (ARBW) are 113% (2.08~7.46 GHz) and 97% (2.5~7.24 GHz), respectively.

This work presents a high isolation UWB-MIMO antenna with a bandwidth up to 8.6 GHz based on a Minkowski fractal structure. The proposed antenna is fed by microstrip and comprises two orthogonal monopole antennas, which delivers a decent isolation effect. Moreover, the ground is designed as two separated blocks with an I-shaped branch for improving the isolation degree between the units. The resultant isolation degree of this antenna is greater than 25 dB. Besides, the electromagnetic interference in the partial frequency band (such as Wi-Max band (3.45–4.45 GHz), WLAN band (5.1– 5.8 GHz), and X-band (7.25–7.75 GHz)) is further prevented through etching a split-ring resonator (SRR) and C-slot on the unit. The antenna reflection coefficient of the UWB-MIMO antenna at the notch is 3.5 dB, which indicates that the antenna has a conspicuousness anti-interference effect. Through the above judicious design, the proposed UWB-MIMO antenna possesses a relative bandwidth of 113% (up to 8.6 GHz). The envelope correlation coefficient between antenna units is less than 0.005, and the antenna radiation efficiency is up to 80%. Representation Purification for End-to-End Speech Translation

Speech-to-text translation (ST) is a cross-modal task that involves converting spoken language into text in a different language. Previous research primarily focused on enhancing speech translation by facilitating knowledge transfer from machine translation, exploring various methods to bridge the gap between speech and text modalities. Despite substantial progress made, factors in speech that are not relevant to translation content, such as timbre and rhythm, often limit the efficiency of knowledge transfer. In this paper, we conceptualize speech representation as a combination of content-agnostic and content-relevant factors. We examine the impact of content-agnostic factors on translation performance through preliminary experiments and observe a significant performance deterioration when content-agnostic perturbations are introduced to speech signals. To address this issue, we propose a Speech Representation Purification with Supervision Enhancement (SRPSE) framework, which excludes the content-agnostic components within speech representations to mitigate their negative impact on ST. Experiments on MuST-C and CoVoST-2 datasets demonstrate that SRPSE significantly improves translation performance across all translation directions in three settings and achieves preeminent performance under a transcript-free setting. Investigation on a quantum algorithm for linear differential equations

Ref. [BCOW17] introduced a pioneering quantum approach (coined BCOW algorithm) for solving linear differential equations with optimal error tolerance. Originally designed for a specific class of diagonalizable linear differential equations, the algorithm was extended by Krovi in [Kro23] to encompass broader classes, including non-diagonalizable and even singular matrices. Despite the common misconception, the original algorithm is indeed applicable to non-diagonalizable matrices, with diagonalisation primarily serving for theoretical analyses to establish bounds on condition number and solution error. By leveraging basic estimates from [Kro23], we derive bounds comparable to those outlined in the Krovi algorithm, thereby reinstating the advantages of the BCOW approach. Furthermore, we extend the BCOW algorithm to address time-dependent linear differential equations by transforming non-autonomous systems into higher-dimensional autonomous ones, a technique also applicable for the Krovi algorithm. © 2024, CC BY-NC-ND.

Investigation of double-gyroid grain boundaries beyond twinning

We study four double-gyroid (DG) grain boundaries (GBs) with different orientations numerically using the Landau–Brazovskii free energy, including the (422) twin boundary studied recently, a network switching GB, and two tilt GBs. Topological variations and geometric deformations are investigated. It is found that deviations in strut lengths and dihedral angles from the bulk DG substantially exceed changes in strut angles and nodal coplanarity. We also examine the spectra along the contact plane of two grains and utilize them to evaluate the GB widths. Of the four GBs we study, the network switching GB changes to the least extent topologically and geometrically, meanwhile has the lowest energy and the smallest GB width. Nonreciprocity with Structured Light Using Optical Pumping in Hot Atoms

Nonreciprocal transmission of structured light has possible applications in high-capacity optical communication and high-dimensional signal processing. Here, we demonstrate the magnet-free and cavity-free optical nonreciprocity of an orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) beam using optical-pumping technology with the assistance of the Doppler effect in hot atoms. By using optical pumping to induce a direction-dependent population transfer of the ground-state atoms, we realize optical nonreciprocity for the signal laser that is carrying OAM. Interestingly, an isolation ratio close to 30 dB and maximum transmission over 0.86 can be achieved simultaneously without the use of an optical cavity. Due to the unique amplitude and helical phase profile of the structured light, our proposal may open an avenue for exploring the singularity characteristics of optical nonreciprocity using structured light.

A spatial light modulator based on inf-wavelength gold grating structure, named GLCoS by us, has been devised and tested to meet the challenge of the high space-bandwidth product in holographic video display. A sample GLCoS has been made and its display color appears green. However, if it is to be a device of a display system, its color characteristics must be further investigated, that is, its ability to display RGB color and its color purity. There are two MIM (Metal-Insulator-Metal) in the GLCoS, inf-wavelength gold grating plus liquid crystal cell and aluminum electrode forms a hybridized MIM and inf-wavelength gold grating itself is a MIM acting as an open-end TM-FP (TM-Fabry-Pérot) resonator. Based on our previous study involving GLCoS theoretical model, simulation software platform (FDTD plus CST Studio Suite) and an experimentally verified sample of single color, we seek an engineering way with simplicity and compatibility in the sense of the technique to investigate the red-green-blue (RGB) color display with GLCoS. Among the huge parameter space including the geometry and size of the structure, material, wavelength and light incident angle. We choose to change width of the slit, incident angle, LC (liquid crystal) birefringence to find the appropriate GLCoS spectral characteristics. The simulation results show that the dynamic modulation of the RGB phase can be achieved in the visible light band, and its amount of phase modulation is close to 2π and high chromatographic purity. © COPYRIGHT SPIE. Few-shot font generation (FFG) aims to learn the target style from a limited number of reference glyphs and generate the remaining glyphs in the target font. Previous works focus on disentangling the content and style features of glyphs, combining the content features of the source glyph with the style features of the reference glyph to generate new glyphs. However, the disentanglement is challenging due to the complexity of glyphs, often resulting in glyphs that are influenced by the style of the source glyph and prone to artifacts. We propose IF-Font, a novel paradigm which incorporates Ideographic Description Sequence (IDS) instead of the source glyph to control the semantics of generated glyphs. To achieve this, we quantize the reference glyphs into tokens, and model the token distribution of target glyphs using corresponding IDS and reference tokens. The proposed method excels in synthesizing glyphs with neat and correct strokes, and enables the creation of new glyphs based on provided IDS. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method greatly outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both one-shot and few-shot settings, particularly when the target styles differ significantly from the training font styles. Variable projection algorithms with sparse constraint for separable nonlinear models

Separable nonlinear models are widely used in various fields such as time series analysis, system modeling, and machine learning, due to their flexible structures and ability to capture nonlinear behavior of data. However, identifying the parameters of these models is challenging, especially when sparse models with better interpretability are desired by practitioners. Previous theoretical and practical studies have shown that variable projection (VP) is an efficient method for identifying separable nonlinear models, but these are based on \(L_2\) penalty of model parameters, which cannot be directly extended to deal with sparse constraint. Based on the exploration of the structural characteristics of separable models, this paper proposes gradient-based and trust-region-based variable projection algorithms, which mainly solve two key problems: how to eliminate linear parameters under sparse constraint;and how to deal with the coupling relationship between linear and nonlinear parameters in the model. Finally, numerical experiments on synthetic data and real time series data are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.
