Towards a Deep Learning Pain-Level Detection Deployment at UAE for Patient-Centric-Pain Management and Diagnosis Support: Framework and Performance Evaluation

The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic revealed the criticality of timely intervention in a situation exacerbated by a shortage in medical staff and equipment. Pain-level screening is the initial step toward identifying the severity of patient conditions. Automatic recognition of state and feelings help in identifying patient symptoms to take immediate adequate action and providing a patient-centric medical plan tailored to a patient's state. In this paper, we propose a framework for pain-level detection for deployment in the United Arab Emirates and assess its performance using the most used approaches in the literature. Our results show that a deployment of a pain-level deep learning detection framework is promising in identifying the pain level accurately.

The rapid evolution of artificial intelligence, big data, and generative AI models has ushered in significant transformations across various sectors, including education. Digital Human Technique, an innovative technology grounded in advanced computer science and artificial intelligence, is reshaping educational paradigms by enabling virtual humans to simulate human behavior, express emotions, and interact with users. This paper explores the application of Digital Human Technique in education reform, focusing on creating immersive, intelligent classroom experiences that foster meaningful interactions between teachers and students. We define Digital Human Technique and delve into its key technical components such as character modeling and rendering, natural language processing, computer vision, and augmented reality technologies. Our methodology involves analyzing the role of educational digital humans created through these technologies, assessing their impact on educational processes, and examining various application scenarios in educational reform. Results indicate that Digital Human Technique significantly enhances the learning experience by enabling personalized teaching, increasing engagement, and fostering emotional connections. Educational digital humans serve as virtual teachers, interactive learning aids, and facilitators of emotional interaction, effectively addressing the challenges of traditional educational methods. Multi-label learning has received much attention due to its wide range of application domains. Multi-label data often has high-dimensional features, which brings more challenges to classification algorithms. Feature selection based on sparse learning is one of the most important approaches, which can select discriminative features to alleviate the curse of dimensionality. However, most of these methods do not consider feature redundancy and label correlation simultaneously. In this work, we propose a multi-label feature selection method that takes feature redundancy and label correlation into account. Specifically, the proposed method first divides features into groups according to feature correlation and then encourages competition within each group but relaxes competition between groups to eliminate redundant and irrelevant features. Moreover, we propose an approach to capture label correlation and exploit it to improve the feature selection. Finally, an iterative optimization algorithm is designed to obtain the feature weights for multi-label feature selection. Extensive experiments on various multi-label datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method compared with some state-of-the-art multi-label feature selection methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2023.

DAMPER: A Dual-Stage Medical Report Generation Framework with Coarse-Grained MeSH Alignment and Fine-Grained Hypergraph Matching

Medical report generation is crucial for clinical diagnosis and patient management, summarizing diagnoses and recommendations based on medical imaging. However, existing work often overlook the clinical pipeline involved in report writing, where physicians typically conduct an initial quick review followed by a detailed examination. Moreover, current alignment methods may lead to misaligned relationships. To address these issues, we propose DAMPER, a dual-stage framework for medical report generation that mimics the clinical pipeline of report writing in two stages. In the first stage, a MeSH-Guided Coarse-Grained Alignment (MCG) stage that aligns chest X-ray (CXR) image features with medical subject headings (MeSH) features to generate a rough keyphrase representation of the overall impression. In the second stage, a Hypergraph-Enhanced Fine-Grained Alignment (HFG) stage that constructs hypergraphs for image patches and report annotations, modeling high-order relationships within each modality and performing hypergraph matching to capture semantic correlations between image regions and textual phrases. Finally,the coarse-grained visual features, generated MeSH representations, and visual hypergraph features are fed into a report decoder to produce the final medical report. Extensive experiments on public datasets demonstrate the effectiveness of DAMPER in generating comprehensive and accurate medical reports, outperforming state-of-the-art methods across various evaluation metrics. Metamorphic Relation (MR) plays a crucial role in Metamorphic Testing (MT), which can be regarded as the implication relation from the input pattern to the output pattern. Based on MR's properties, the identification of Metamorphic Relations (MRs) can be from its input pattern and output pattern, respectively. However, the finding of the effective input pattern is very first and important. Especially for complicated mathematical function includes more than two input variables, we systematically analyze the structural model of input pattern in MR, propose the concept of the class of basic input pattern, as well as prove that any one input pattern can be expressed as a combination of basic input patterns in scientific computing programs. Moreover, the structural model of input pattern in MR is established based on previous proof. Finally, we put forward an identification algorithm framework and analysis its complexity. The core contribution of our method is to decompose the input pattern identification problem in multi-dimensional space into a single one-dimensional. For this reason, the examples show that the complexity of the algorithm is reduced significantly. © 2022 IEEE.

—To accurately predict the risk of recurrence and metastasis of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients, an image-encoded risk prediction model was proposed. 752 patients (training vs. testing: 527 vs. 225) were retrospectively collected, and the plasma EBV DNA copies were tested 13 times during treatment. Based on 13 times plasma EBV DNA copies, three kinds of image encoding methods were employed to characterize the linear and nonlinear dynamic change of longitudinal EBV DNA, i.e. Gramian Angular Summation Field (GASF), Gramian Angular Difference Field (GADF), and Recurrence Plot (RP). The Cox proportional hazard regression model was constructed by incorporating both image and clinical features as covariates to determine the risk factors and prediction models for disease-free survival (DFS). On the test set, the proposed model combining image and clinical features achieved C-index and AUC of 0.777 and 0.776, respectively outperforming the model relying solely on clinical features (C-index = 0.667, AUC = 0.675). In conclusion, the dynamic risk prediction model with image encoding can monitor changes in plasma EBV DNA copies during treatment, aiding doctors in assessing whole-body tumor burden, accurately predicting the dynamic risk of recurrence and metastasis, and planning individualized treatments in NPC patients. © VDE VERLAG GMBH.

Fence Theorem: Towards Dual-Objective Semantic-Structure Isolation in Preprocessing Phase for 3D Anomaly Detection

3D anomaly detection (AD) is prominent but difficult due to lacking a unified theoretical foundation for preprocessing design. We establish the Fence Theorem, formalizing preprocessing as a dual-objective semantic isolator: (1) mitigating cross-semantic interference to the greatest extent feasible and (2) confining anomaly judgements to aligned semantic spaces wherever viable, thereby establishing intra-semantic comparability. Any preprocessing approach achieves this goal through a two-stage process of Semantic-Division and Spatial-Constraints stage. Through systematic deconstruction, we theoretically and experimentally subsume existing preprocessing methods under this theorem via tripartite evidence: qualitative analyses, quantitative studies, and mathematical proofs. Guided by the Fence Theorem, we implement Patch3D, consisting of Patch-Cutting and Patch-Matching modules, to segment semantic spaces and consolidate similar ones while independently modeling normal features within each space. Experiments on Anomaly-ShapeNet and Real3D-AD with different settings demonstrate that progressively finer-grained semantic alignment in preprocessing directly enhances point-level AD accuracy, providing inverse validation of the theorem’s causal logic. Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) are widely applied on graph-level tasks, such as node classification, link prediction and graph generation. Existing GNNs mostly adopt a message-passing mechanism to aggregate node information with their neighbors, which often makes node information similar after rounds of aggregations and leads to oversmoothing. Although recent works have made improvements by combining different message aggregation methods or introducing semantic encodings as priors, these message-passing based GNNs still fail to combat oversmoothing after multiple iterations of node aggregation. Besides, the feature extraction ability of these methods is restricted because of the graph sparsity that hinders the aggregation of node information. To deal with the above two issues, we propose Neighborhood-based and Label-enhanced Graph Transformer (NLGT), a novel and effective framework for graph learning. Specifically, we present a label-enhanced feature fusion mechanism that integrate the shallow node features and label embeddings as enhanced features. Moreover, we design a neighborhood-based mask attention mechanism to alleviate the negative effects caused by the sparsity of the graph. In the predicting stage, we aggregate the prediction results from multiple sampled sub-graphs and apply voting mechanisms to enhance the accuracy and robustness of our framework. Finally, extensive experiments are conducted on four open benchmark datasets, which demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of our proposed framework compared with existing state-of-the-art methods. Recently, the textual adversarial attack models become increasingly popular due to their successful in estimating the robustness of NLP models. However, existing works have obvious deficiencies. (1) They usually consider only a single granularity of modification strategies (e.g. word-level or sentence-level), which is insufficient to explore the holistic textual space for generation;(2) They need to query victim models hundreds of times to make a successful attack, which is highly inefficient in practice. To address such problems, in this paper we propose MAYA, a MultigrAnularitY Attack model to effectively generate high-quality adversarial samples with fewer queries to victim models. Furthermore, we propose a reinforcement-learning based method to train a multi-granularity attack agent through behavior cloning with the expert knowledge from our MAYA algorithm to further reduce the query times. Additionally, we also adapt the agent to attack black-box models that only output labels without confidence scores. We conduct comprehensive experiments to evaluate our attack models by attacking BiLSTM, BERT and RoBERTa in two different black-box attack settings and three benchmark datasets. Experimental results show that our models achieve overall better attacking performance and produce more fluent and grammatical adversarial samples compared to baseline models. Besides, our adversarial attack agent significantly reduces the query times in both attack settings. INNSE: Invertible neural network-based DNA image storage with self-correction encoding

DNA storage has become an alternative to silicon-based storage of media. However, when used to store multimodal data such as images, it fails to take full advantage of the characteristics of high correlation and variability present in such data, and currently remains inferior in terms of encoding density and time complexity. It also has the shortcoming of weak performance in terms of error correction methods to address insertion and deletion errors caused by error crosstalk. Therefore, we proposed an invertible neural network-based DNA image storage self-correction encoding method (INNSE) that uses the invertibility of network to perform up-down sampling processing on image and video data, thereby greatly reducing the number of DNA sequences required for data storage. A codebook generator was then designed to encode low-dimensional vectors into DNA sequences that meet various constraints. Finally, a self-correction method was constructed to achieve DNA sequence error correction at the base level without adding any redundant information. Our experimental results showed that, compared to the Yin-Yang algorithm, the encoding density of INNSE was increased by 3×, encoding time complexity was reduced by 95.26%. Under a simulated error rate of 2%, PSNR and SSIM were raised by 80.88% and 63.82%, respectively, proving that INNSE has significant advantages in encoding performance and error correction ability. © 2025
