With the development of emerging technologies such as cloud computing and large AI models (such as LLM), many applications have placed higher demands on the intensive read and write processing of massive data. Addressing the limitations of traditional file systems, we propose PancakeFS, an LSM-Tree-based file system. Leveraging the write-friendly characteristics of LSM-Tree, PancakeFS exhibits efficient write performance. We improve read performance through the design of an inode allocation algorithm based on subtree partitioning and optimization of the disk layout for hot data reconstruction. Our experimental results demonstrate that PancakeFS outperforms Ext4 and TableFS in terms of both read and write performance. © 2024 IEEE.

Research on key technologies of edge cache in virtual data space across WAN

The authors of this paper have previously proposed the global virtual data space system (GVDS) to aggregate the scattered and autonomous storage resources in China’s national supercomputer grid (National Supercomputing Center in Guangzhou, National Supercomputing Center in Jinan, National Supercomputing Center in Changsha, Shanghai Supercomputing Center, and Computer Network Information Center in Chinese Academy of Sciences) into a storage system that spans the wide area network (WAN), which realizes the unified management of global storage resources in China. At present, the GVDS has been successfully deployed in the China National Grid environment. However, when accessing and sharing remote data in the WAN, the GVDS will cause redundant transmission of data and waste a lot of network bandwidth resources. In this paper, we propose an edge cache system as a supplementary system of the GVDS to improve the performance of upper-level applications accessing and sharing remote data. Specifically, we first designs the architecture of the edge cache system, and then study the key technologies of this architecture: the edge cache index mechanism based on double-layer hashing, the edge cache replacement strategy based on the GDSF algorithm, the request routing based on consistent hashing method, and the cluster member maintenance method based on the SWIM protocol. The experimental results show that the edge cache system has successfully implemented the relevant operation functions (read, write, deletion, modification, etc.) and is compatible with the POSIX interface in terms of function. Further, it can greatly reduce the amount of data transmission and increase the data access bandwidth when the accessed file is located at the edge cache system in terms of performance, i.e., its performance is close to the performance of the network file system in the local area network (LAN).

Numerical assessment of the erosion risk for cavitating twisted hydrofoil by three methods

In this paper, the large eddy simulation (LES) method in conjunction with the Zwart cavitation model is adopted for the assessment of the erosion risk on a hydrofoil surface. The numerical results are in good agreement with the experiments. On this basis, three methods, namely the intensity function method (IFM), the time-averaged aggressiveness indicators (TAIs) and the gray level method (GLM), are applied for the assessment of the erosion risk. It is shown that the erosion intensity index of the IFM is extremely sensitive to the artificially selected thresholds, which greatly limits the application of the method. The erosion risk predicted by four indicators in the TAIs does not agree well with the experimental results. Further analysis demonstrates that the GLM using the instantaneous pressure field is relatively satisfactory, which can provide a reasonable assessment of the erosion and is not very sensitive to the artificially selected thresholds. To further improve the accuracy of the GLM for the erosion risk prediction, the time-average pressure field is adopted in the GLM for the erosion evaluation. It is suggested that the erosion assessment by using the time-averaged pressure field is in better agreement with the experimental results when compared with that by using the instantaneous pressure field.

Ultra-low power MoS2 optoelectronic synapse with wavelength sensitivity for color target recognition

Optoelectronic synapses that integrate visual perception and pre-processing hold significant potential for neuromorphic vision systems（NVSs）. However, due to a lack of wavelength sensitivity, existing NVS mainly focuses on gray-scale image processing, making it challenging to recognize color images. Additionally, the high power consumption of optoelectronic synapses, compared to the 10 fJ energy consumption of biological synapses, limits their broader application. To address these challenges, an energy-efficient NVS capable of color target recognition in a noisy environment was developed,utilizing a MoS2optoelectronic synapse with wavelength sensitivity. Benefiting from the distinct photon capture capabilities of 450, 535, and 650 nm light, the optoelectronic synapse exhibits wavelength-dependent synaptic plasticity, including excitatory postsynaptic current（EPSC）, paired-pulse facilitation（PPF）, and long-term plasticity（LTP）. These properties can effectively mimic the visual memory and color discrimination functions of the human vision system. Results demonstrate that the NVS, based on MoS2optoelectronic synapses, can eliminate the color noise at the sensor level, increasing color image recognition accuracy from 50% to 90%. Importantly, the optoelectronic synapse operates at a low voltage spike of0.0005 V, consuming only 0.075 fJ per spike, surpassing the energy efficiency of both existing optoelectronic and biological synapses. This ultra-low power, color-sensitive device eliminates the need for color filters and offers great promise for future deployment in filter-free NVS.

Friedel-Crafts reaction and transition-metal catalysis represent primary methodologies for arene acylation; however, suffer from certain limitations, such as electronic effect-dependent reactivity, regioselectivity issues, the necessity of directing group, and relatively exceptionally limited exploration in meta-and para-acylations. N-heterocyclic carbene(NHC) catalysis has recently emerged as a promising alternative strategy for arene acylation, offering distinct regioselectivity profiles that are challenging to achieve through known methods. Herein, an NHC-mediated photo-catalytic para-selective C–H acylation of aryl alcohols is disclosed. The reaction employs a remote radical-induced temporary spiro cyclization strategy, proceeding via tandem radical dearomatization, radical acylation, rearomatization processes. Combined experimental and computational mechanistic studies support the proposed reaction pathway and observe an exclusive para-selectivity regardless of the nature of the substituents on the substrates. Despite the less satisfactory yields, the current method exhibits non-electronic nature-based reactivity and regioselectivity, enabling quick access to acylated arenes that are difficult or impossible for reported methods.

The rising demand for reliable, high-bandwidth satellite communications in far-reach areas drives the integration of low earth orbit (LEO) satellites into future 6G networks. In this paper, we investigate the deployment of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) technology and rate splitting multiple access (RSMA) within LEO satellite systems to improve communication quality and system capacity. We derive closed-form expressions for outage probability (OP) and reliable throughput that validate the theoretical advantages of these technologies under various signal-to-noise ratio conditions. Numerical results demonstrate that, compared with traditional space division multiple access (SDMA) and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) approaches, our RSMA and RIS-integrated framework significantly can reduce OP and enhance reliable throughput with an appropriate power-splitting factor, showcasing its superiority in RIS-enabled satellite communication scenarios. © 2024 IEEE.

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) has been considered a key feature of next-generation wireless networks. This paper investigates the joint design of the radar receive filter and dual-functional transmit waveform for the multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) ISAC system. While optimizing the mean square error (MSE) of the radar receive spatial response and maximizing the achievable rate at the communication receiver, besides the constraints of full-power radar receiving filter and unimodular transmit sequence, we control the maximum range sidelobe level, which is often overlooked in existing ISAC waveform design literature, for better radar imaging performance. To solve the formulated optimization problem with convex and nonconvex constraints, we propose an inexact augmented Lagrangian method (ALM) algorithm. For each subproblem in the proposed inexact ALM algorithm, we custom-design a block successive upper-bound minimization (BSUM) scheme with closed-form solutions for all blocks of variable to enhance the computational efficiency. Convergence analysis shows that the proposed algorithm is guaranteed to provide a stationary and feasible solution. Extensive simulations are performed to investigate the impact of different system parameters on communication and radar imaging performance. One-step implementation of a nonadiabatic geometric fSim gate in superconducting circuits

Due to their significant application in reducing algorithm depth, fSim gates have attracted a lot of attention. However, during the implementation of quantum gates, fluctuations in control parameters and decoherence caused by the environment may lead to a decrease in the fidelity of the gate. Implementing an fSim gate that is robust to these factors in one step remains an unresolved issue. In this paper, we propose a one-step implementation of a nonadiabatic geometric fSim gate composed of a nonadiabatic holonomic controlled-phase (cp) gate and a nonadiabatic noncyclic geometric iswap gate with parallel paths in a tunable superconducting circuit. Compared to the composite nonadiabatic geometric fSim gate composed of a nonadiabatic holonomic cp gate and a nonadiabatic geometric iswap gate, our scheme takes only half the time and demonstrates robustness to parameter fluctuations, as well as to environmental impacts. Moreover, the scheme does not require complex controls, making it very easy to implement in experiments, and can be achieved in various circuit structures. Our scheme may provide a promising path toward quantum computation and simulation.
