An urban-scale spatiotemporal optimization of rooftop photovoltaic charging of electric vehicles

Solar photovoltaic (PV) farming is increasingly being used to power electric vehicles (EVs). Although many studies have developed dynamic EV charging prediction and scheduling models, few of them have coupled rooftop PV electricity generation with the spatiotemporal EV charging demands at an urban scale. Thus, this study develops a research framework containing three interconnected modules to investigate the feasibility of EV charging powered by rooftop PVs. The framework is constructed by the statistics of time serial EV charging demands at each station, the planning of rooftop PV installations associated with all charging stations, and the development of a dynamic dispatching algorithm to transmit surplus electricity from one station to another. The algorithm can maximize the overall balance between supply and demand, maximize the total PV electricity generation while minimising the total PV area, minimize the number of PV charging stations used as the suppliers for dynamic dispatch, and minimize the total electricity transmission distance between stations given the same power supply. The experiment utilizes a complete EV charging dataset containing 5574 charging piles with more than 9.7 million records in June and July in Guangzhou, China. The results show that rooftop PVs can supply more than 90% of the charging demand. The results encourage and inspire us to generalize and promote such a solution in other cities. Future work can refine the algorithm by adapting different PV sizes into various charging stations to further improve the electricity generation capability and the dynamic dispatching efficiency.

Delay tolerant networks may become unexpectedly partitioned due to node mobility or variation in signal strength. However, most widely used models in some relative works are generally very simplistic. In order to exploit intelligent forwarding algorithms, a novel nodal mobile model of delay tolerant networks is presented to map reality with more accuracy. And several approaches are introduced to analyze the network structure, such as n-cliques, n-clans, degree, closeness and betweenness. Our research results showed that the centralizations became smaller when the wireless connections were concerned. It meant that quite a number of nodes became potential relays because of the new structure of networks.

Precise measurements of chronic wound areas are very important for measuring the efficacy of different treatments, since it provides a clear picture of the chosen treatment evolution. The most used techniques still in use for measuring the wound areas involve manual measuring, paper scales and/or acetate tracing, with each health professional possibly measuring the wounds in slightly different ways, specially when dealing with the wound's depth. Thus, it is common to observe inconsistent wound area estimations by different health workers on the same wounds. Moreover, the measuring process requires direct contact with the wound, increasing the contamination and infection risks, besides possibly causing discomfort for the patient. An alternative that has already been proved successful is the use of Structure from Motion (SfM) to recover three-dimensional representations of a wound's surface and estimate that area. In this work, we analyze the effectiveness of several widely used point descriptors (BRIEF, DRINK, FREAK, ORB, SIFT and SURF) in the SfM wound reconstruction task when applied to real images of realistic synthetic wounds made of latex placed on different areas of the body. The results showed that SIFT, SURF and DRINK produced better area estimates. Since the execution time is a factor, we selected DRINK as the standard descriptor for our system, since it is approximately 9.3 and 4.9 times faster than SIFT and SURF, respectively.

Refactoring is a common software maintenance practice. The literature defines standard code modifications for each refactoring type and popular IDEs provide refactoring tools aiming to support these standard modifications. However, previous studies indicated that developers either frequently avoid using these tools or end up modifying and even reversing the code automatically refactored by IDEs. Thus, developers are forced to manually apply refactorings, which is cumbersome and error-prone. This means that refactoring support may not be entirely aligned with practical needs. The improvement of tooling support for refactoring in practice requires understanding in what ways developers tailor refactoring modifications. To address this issue, we conduct an analysis of 1,162 refactorings composed of more than 100k program modifications from 13 software projects. The results reveal that developers recurrently apply patterns of additional modifications along with the standard ones, from here on called patterns of customized refactorings. For instance, we found customized refactorings in 80.77% of the Move Method instances observed in the software projects. We also investigated the features of refactoring tools in popular IDEs and observed that most of the customization patterns are not fully supported by them. Additionally, to understand the relevance of these customizations, we conducted a survey with 40 developers about the most frequent customization patterns we found. Developers confirm the relevance of customization patterns and agree that improvements in IDE's refactoring support are needed. These observations highlight that refactoring guidelines must be updated to reflect typical refactoring customizations. Also, IDE builders can use our results as a basis to enable a more flexible application of automated refactorings. For example, developers should be able to choose which method must handle exceptions when extracting an exception code into a new method.

Interactive Whiteboard (IWB) systems are increasingly being used to replace traditional whiteboards in educational activities, making them more efficient and interesting for both teachers and students. However, no studies have been conducted to investigate how age, educational level, and employment status can impact the adoption and usage of IWB systems in the educational setting. The study aims to analyze the acceptance and the influencing factors on faculty members’ intention and usage behavior towards IWB systems in teaching, utilizing the Modified-Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology 2 (UTAUT2) model. 135 faculty members from various colleges and departments across Batangas State University ARASOF-Nasugbu Campus were surveyed and data was analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) through SmartPLS software for hypotheses testing. The results of the study indicate that faculty members’ behavioral intention to use interactive whiteboard systems in teaching is positively influenced by performance expectancy and social influence. Moreover, facilitating conditions and habit positively impact usage behavior. This study, therefore, concludes that there is significant roles of performance expectancy and social influence as well as the moderating effect of age on the behavioral intention to use interactive whiteboard (IWB) systems in education. Furthermore, the study confirms that effort expectancy, hedonic motivation, and status as moderating variables significantly influence faculty members’ usage behavior when using IWB systems in teaching.

Information technology (IT) plays an important role in the education field, with ubiquitous computing technology the ubiquitous learning (U-Iearning) is now a practical possibility. Cloud computing can offer many benefits to the learning field, as it provides all resources such as software (SaaS), platforms (PaaS), and infrastructure (IaaS) as a service. The multi-agent systems approach is an excellent way to implement flexible systems whose structure evolves dynamically. Based on the discussion of the benefits of cloud computing and the multi-agent systems approach to support adaptive and personalized learning content, the paper presents a hybrid approach based on cloud computing that uses the multi-tenant architecture where tenants share the system software. Multi-agent system is used in this approach to support a ubiquitous learning system. A multi-tenant SaaS application addresses the unique requirements of each tenant by enabling customization at the tenant level with the adoption of the concept ofvirtualization (virtual machines). This paper explores the challenges of achieving performance isolation in the context of multi-tenant SaaS applications. As an output of this study, U- learning on the cloud-based multi-agent system architecture has been proposed. To achieve lower cost of resources and server allocation and provide isolation among learners in the ubiquitous learning environment. © 2022 IEEE.

Multi-objective optimization algorithms might struggle in finding optimal dominating solutions, especially in real-case scenarios where problems are generally characterized by non-separability, non-differentiability, and multi-modality issues. An effective strategy that already showed to improve the outcome of optimization algorithms consists in manipulating the search space, in order to explore its most promising areas. In this work, starting from a Pareto front identified by an optimization strategy, we exploit Local Bubble Dilation Functions (LBDFs) to manipulate a locally bounded region of the search space containing non-dominated solutions. We tested our approach on the benchmark functions included in the DTLZ and WFG suites, showing that the Pareto front obtained after the application of LBDFs is most of the time characterized by an increased hyper-volume value. Our results confirm that LBDFs are an effective means to identify additional non-dominated solutions that can improve the quality of the Pareto front.

Reasoning over sports videos for question answering is an important task with numerous applications, such as player training and information retrieval. However, this task has not been explored due to the lack of relevant datasets and the challenging nature it presents. Most datasets for video question answering (VideoQA) focus mainly on general and coarse-grained understanding of daily-life videos, which is not applicable to sports scenarios requiring professional action understanding and fine-grained motion analysis. In this paper, we introduce the first dataset, named Sports-QA, specifically designed for the sports VideoQA task. The Sports-QA dataset includes various types of questions, such as descriptions, chronologies, causalities, and counterfactual conditions, covering multiple sports. Furthermore, to address the characteristics of the sports VideoQA task, we propose a new Auto-Focus Transformer (AFT) capable of automatically focusing on particular scales of temporal information for question answering. We conduct extensive experiments on Sports-QA, including baseline studies and the evaluation of different methods. The results demonstrate that our AFT achieves state-of-the-art performance. The Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) field has grown significantly over the past few decades. Websites are now crucial tools for the distribution of digital material. In order to compete worldwide and give everyone the information they need. Therefore, websites need to be usable and accessible. The usability of a website is related to how simple it is to use, while accessibility is required for successful and efficient web use. The author uses the School of Information systems website as an object for this research. This research will concentrate on using an automated tool to assess websites. The research objectives are to examine the usability and performance of the website, including information delivery methods and the utilization of every aspect the website offers visitors. The research uses automated tools to evaluate websites such as WAVE, Tenon, Google Lighthouse, and Pingdom. The results of this research could assist stakeholders in improving the quality of the website in order to boost user satisfaction and experience.

This paper proposes an algorithm, named HWK-Sets, based on K-Means, suited for clustering data which are variable-sized sets of elementary items. Clustering sets is difficult because data objects do not have numerical attributes and it is not possible to use the classical Euclidean distance upon which K-Means is normally based. An adaptation of the Jaccard distance between sets is used, which exploits application-sensitive information. More in particular, the Hartigan and Wong variation of K-Means is adopted which uses medoids as cluster representatives, can work with several seeding methods and can favor the fast attainment of a careful solution. The paper introduces HWK-Sets which is implemented in Java by parallel streams. Then, the efficiency and accuracy of HWK-Sets are demonstrated by simulation experiments.
