In 2012, a study looking back 35 years indicated that 90% of all aircraft losses in battle were caused by infrared (IR) guided missiles. Man portable air defense systems are a cheap and prolific resource for both state and non-state actors that enables the employment of IR guided missiles. As such, significant time is required to be invested in developing effective countermeasures to ensure a fast jet can attain and sustain air superiority in operations. This article will provide a summary of the thesis by Glover (Glover ***-optic countermeasure modelling in a fast jet environment: rosette scanning seekers with an ultraviolet guard band. Thesis, Cranfield University, 2019) that aimed to develop a myriad of IR-based countermeasure techniques. Specifically, when pseudo imaging, a rosette scan IR seeker is employed against a fast jet with an ultraviolet guard band counter-countermeasure. A series of seven trials was simulated using Chemring's CounterSim program to produce a spread of results based on the developed technique's effectiveness. Several of these trials produced outcomes with a probability of escaping hit greater than 97% across a range of altitudes. The successful techniques involve an assortment of concepts, including employment of spectral flares, aircraft maneuvering, multi-flare patterns, and the notion of masking.

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) have been extensively investigated to improve the efficiency, economy, and stability of modern power systems and electric vehicles (EVs). However, it is still challenging to widely deploy BESS in commercial and industrial applications due to the concerns of battery aging. This paper proposes an integrated battery life loss modeling and anti-aging energy management (IBLEM) method for improving the total economy of BESS in EVs. The quantification of BESS aging cost is realized by a multifactorial battery life loss quantification model established by capturing aging characteristics from cell acceleration aging tests. Meanwhile, a charging event analysis method is proposed to deploy the built life loss model in vehicle BESS management. Two BESS active anti-aging vehicle energy management models: vehicle to grid (V2G) scheduling and plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) power distribution, are further designed, where the battery life loss quantification model is used to generate the aging cost feedback signals. The performance of the developed method is validated on a V2G peak-shaving simulation system and a hybrid electric vehicle. The work in this paper presents a practical solution to quantify and mitigate battery aging costs by optimizing energy management strategies and thus can further promote transportation electrification.

The radar equation is the fundamental mathematical model of the basic function of a radar system. Moreover, there are many versions of the radar equation, which correspond to particular radar operations, like low pulse repetition frequency (PRF), high PRF, or surveillance mode. In many cases, all these expressions of the radar equation exist in their combined forms, giving little information to the actual physics and signal geometry between the radar and the target involved in the process. In this case study, we divide the radar equation into its major steps and present a descriptive mathematical modelling of the radar and other related equations utilizing the free space loss and target gain concepts to simulate the effect of a white noise jammer on an adversary radar. We believe that this work will be particularly beneficial to instructors of radar courses and to radar simulation engineers because of its analytical block approach to the main equations related to the fields of radar and electronic warfare. Finally, this work falls under the field of predictive dynamics for radar systems using mathematical modelling techniques.

This study investigates underwater acoustic propagation and localization in the southwestern waters of Taiwan, aiming to enhance maritime safety and vessel tracking capabilities. Utilizing a combination of numerical modeling and field experiments, the research examined sound transmission characteristics, optimized acoustic sensor placement, and evaluated the effectiveness of localization algorithms. Numerical simulations employing the Bellhop model [1] revealed efficient sound propagation patterns, guiding the design of field experiments. Field experiments involving both stationary and towed acoustic systems demonstrated accurate vessel localization within a 2 km radius, achieving horizontal errors below 100 m and depth errors less than 2 m. These findings highlight the feasibility of passive acoustic systems as a reliable and cost-effective supplement to traditional tracking methods such as AIS, effectively addressing limitations in maritime surveillance. The study establishes a robust framework for integrating advanced acoustic technologies into maritime security strategies, providing valuable insights for real-time monitoring and environmental adaptability in challenging underwater conditions. Future applications include expanding operational ranges and enhancing data processing capabilities for broader use in marine resource management and national defense. © 2025 IEEE.

This study presents the design, mathematical modeling, and analysis of a 2×2 microstrip patch antenna array (MSPA) for 5G applications operating at 5.3 GHz. The proposed array employs a small strip antenna module with two vertical slots, and is based on phased array antenna systems (PAAS), which are widely used in both defense radar and commercial applications. The microstrip patch antenna is designed using Ansys HFSS simulation tool, and features slot arrays for linear polarization parallel and perpendicular to the axis. The antenna is fed through transverse slots in the wide wall of the circular waveguide and fed through longitudinal slots in the small wall of the rectangular waveguide. The single MSPA achieves a maximum gain of 6.14 dB at 5.3 GHz, while the 2×2 array structure produces a gain of 7.713 dB at the same frequency. The results demonstrate the potential for such antennas in 5G technology and devices. © 2023 IEEE.

Target detection is a crucial task in defense applications such as surveillance, infrared search and track, and missile approach warning systems. Typically, the target image is extended over a few sensor pixels of the imaging system only and the detection is performed by appropriate algorithms. In order to study the impact of imaging system design parameters and environmental conditions on the detection performance, a simulation tool is developed. Apart from computing detection ranges based on the expected signal to noise ratio the algorithm requires for detection, the tool is also meant for simulating image sequences of engaging targets. Therefore, it provides means to investigate the interplay between system design parameters and algorithms for target detection. The simulation is based on a rigorous calculation of the target image in the focal plane, with consideration of the optical transfer functions of imaging chain components. Integrating the target image over the active pixel areas yields the additional signal of the detector pixels caused by the target. Based on these values and average background noise the signal to noise ratio (SNR) is obtained as function of the target distance. Image data is generated by overlaying the additional signals over a background image. We exemplify the application of the simulation tool by studying the effect of various system parameters and environmental conditions on the resulting SNR and detection range. Corresponding simulated image data is presented as well.

A fuzzy systems approach to modeling the US-China arms race

This paper presents a fuzzy approach to modeling the arms race between the United States and China. In the proposed model, we integrate fuzzy logic with differential equations, enabling the modeling of strategic interactions between the two nations in a non-linear manner, differing from the original Richardson model. This methodology allows for the incorporation of quantitative data and expert knowledge on conflicts into the differential equations-based mathematical model. By studying the phase plane of the fuzzy model, it is possible to analyze scenarios of stability and tension escalation in the dynamics of the arms race.

There is a subset of computational problems that existing algorithms may not complete due to a lack of adequate computational resources on tactical edge computing platforms. Although this subset is computable in polynomial time, many polynomial problems are not computable in mission time. Here, we define a subclass of deterministic polynomial time complexity called mission class, wherein the computations must complete in mission time. By focusing on this subclass of languages in the context of successful military applications, we discuss their computational and network constraints. We investigate feasible (non)linear models that will minimize energy and maximize memory, efficiency, and computational power, and also provide an approximate solution obtained within a pre-determined length of computation time using limited resources so that an optimal solution to a language could be determined.

The Hiperwalk package is designed to facilitate the simulation of quantum walks using heterogeneous high-performance computing, taking advantage of the parallel processing power of diverse processors such as CPUs, GPUs, and acceleration cards. This package enables the simulation of both the continuous-time and discrete-time quantum walk models, effectively modeling the behavior of quantum systems on large graphs. Hiperwalk features a user-friendly Python package frontend with comprehensive documentation, as well as a high-performance C-based inner core that leverages parallel computing for efficient linear algebra calculations. Reliability is a critical performance for airborn communication networks, and it is heavily influenced by network topology. Redundant designs might improve reliability, but the increased weight, cost, and complexity must be taken into account. This paper focuses on the reliabiltiy analysis of different topologies of network in airborn communication applications, and the comprehensive impact of redundancy mechanisms on its reliability performance. A network reliability simulation method based on the minimum path set algorithm and Monte Carlo simulation method is designed, and quantitative comparison and analysis of two frequently used airborn topologies and their dual redundancy forms are carried out. According to simulation results, the dual-loop topology is suitable for building the backbone network of the airborn communication system, and the dual-bus topology is suitable for some critical subnet systems with stricter reliability requirements. © 2022 IEEE.
