Household catastrophic health expenditure and depressive mood among Chinese adults, children, and adolescents: a population-based panel study

BackgroundNumerous studies have suggested that catastrophic health expenditure (CHE) is associated with depressive mood. However, most published studies have examined the relationship between CHE and depressive mood only among middle-aged and older people who are already susceptible to depressive mood. The objective of our analysis was to determine the associations between household CHE and depressive mood among adults and children/*** study population consisted of Chinese residents who participated in the 2016 CFPS, 2018 CFPS, and 2020 CFPS. Our analytical sample was restricted to children/adolescents aged 10-17 years and adults aged 18 years and older. We utilized multilevel random effects multivariate logistic regression models to investigate the associations between CHE and depressive mood among both adults and children/*** study revealed that 15% of adults and 12.61% of children/adolescents had experienced CHE and that CHE was positively associated with depressive mood among adults (OR = 1.34, 95% CI: 1.21, 1.50) and among children/adolescents (OR = 1.48, 95% CI: 1.12, 1.96) after adjustment for potential confounding factors. This positive association persisted in different subgroup analyses. In addition, we found that being insured with either urban or rural health insurance was associated with decreased odds of depressive *** study indicated that CHE is common in Chinese families and may increase the risk of depressive mood for both adults and children/adolescents. These findings emphasize the need to focus on expanding health insurance coverage, as well as implementing family-based mental health resources and financial literacy programs to reduce the psychological impact of CHE across all age groups.

Impacts of changes in land cover and topography on a heavy precipitation event in Central Asia

Future variations in precipitation due to the effects of topography and possible trends in land-use change in Central Asia are evaluated by utilizing numerical experiments based on a case *** possible changes in land cover,oasification leads to a 0.23 mm increase in regional-averaged precipitation,accounting for 3.0%of the ***,desertification and urbanization decrease precipitation,by about−5.3%and−4.7%proportionally,mainly through changing the near-surface humidity and thermal environment and related upward transport of heat fluxes in the boundary ***,varied terrain height produces a more prominent impact on precipitation(up to−13.1%and−24.9%in the 1/2 and 1/4 original terrain height runs),mainly via varying the wind field and microphysical processes(low-level jet and cloud).Furthermore,the heavier rainfall happens over the mountains,while the more sensitive response of precipitation to varied topography and land use occurs over the *** the main microphysical conversion pathways of the rainwater budget,the greater peaks of PSMLT(snow melting into raindrops)and PGMLT(graupel melting into raindrops)present over the mountains but not the plains are responsible for the difference in precipitation between the mountains and ***,the more sensitive response of plain rainfall might be related to the rapid transit of rainfall over the plains but prolonged mountainous precipitation lasting together with relatively slowly varying microphysical conversion processes when airflows climb the *** findings of this study have important strategic significance for improving the environment of ecosystems and strengthening the capacity for disaster prevention.

Palladium nanocrystals coupled with quasi-cuboid ceria embedded nitrogen-doped graphene aerogel boosts ethanol electrocatalytic oxidation

Metal oxides can significantly enhance catalytic performance as assistants due to the synergistic and interface effects. Therefore, a highly effective and long-lasting anode electrocatalyst for the ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) can be designed through appropriate coupling of metallic oxides. In this work, a catalyst with quasi-cuboid ceria particles anchored Pd nanocrystals (NCs) embedded in nitrogen-doped graphene (NG) aerogels was synthesized (Pd/CeO2-x@NG) through a simple template-free hydrothermal and wet chemical reduction method without the use of surfactants. As an electrocatalyst for alkaline EOR, Pd/CeO2-x@NG (1264.0 mA mg- 1;5.04 mA cm- 2) demonstrates superior performance to commercial Pd/C (430.2 mA mg-1;2.79 mA cm- 2) in terms of mass/specific activity, durability and stability. The mutual transformation between Ce3+ and Ce4+ in ceria not only generates numerous oxygen vacancies and enhances active oxygen adsorption like OH but also accelerates electron transfer from ceria to Pd, leading to a downward shift in the d-band center of Pd. Furthermore, NG's plentiful N-containing functional groups offer more active sites for Pd NCs. This work not only designed a catalyst with better activity stability and durability than commercial Pd/C in alkaline EOR, but also presents a feasible strategy for using metal oxides as assistants to develop efficient and durable EOR electrocatalysts.

Four kinds of capping materials for controlling phosphorus and nitrogen release from contaminated sediment using a static simulation experiment

We determined the effects of quartz sand(QS),water treatment plant sludge(WTPS),aluminum-based P-inactivation agent(Al-PIA),and lanthanum-modified bentonite(LMB)thin-layer capping on controlling phosphorus and nitrogen release from the sediment,using a static simulation *** sediment in the experiment was sampled from Yundang Lagoon(Xiamen,Fujian Province,China),which is a eutrophic *** total phosphorus(TP),ammonium nitrogen(NH4+-N),and total organic carbon(TOC)levels in the overlying water were measured at regular intervals,and the changes of different P forms in WTPS,Al-PIA,and sediment of each system were analyzed before and after the *** average TP reduction rates of LMB,Al-PIA,WTPS,and QS were 94.82,92.14,86.88,and 10.68%,respectively,when the release strength of sediment TP was 2.26–9.19 mg/(m^(2)·d)and the capping strength of the materials was 2 kg/m^(2).Thin-layer capping of LMB,WTPS,and Al-PIA could effectively control P release from the sediment(P<0.05).However,thin-layer capping of LMB,Al-PIA,and QS did not significantly reduce the release of ammonium N and organic matter(P>0.05).Based on our results,LMB,Al-PIA,and WTPS thin-layer capping promoted the migration and transformation of easily released P in *** P adsorbed by WTPS and Al-PIA mainly occurred in the form of NAIP.

Development and validation of the PHM-CPA model to predict in-hospital mortality for cirrhotic patients with acute kidney injury

Background: The presence of acute kidney injury (AKI) significantly increases in-hospital mortality risk for cirrhotic patients. Early prognosis prediction for these patients is crucial. We aimed to develop and validate a machine learning model for in-hospital mortality prediction for cirrhotic patients with AKI. Methods: Data from cirrhotic patients with AKI hospitalized at the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University between January 1, 2013, and December 31, 2020 were used to train and validate an extreme Gradient Boosting model to predict in-hospital mortality risk. The Boruta algorithm was used for variable selection. The optimal model was selected and named as PHM-CPA (Prediction of in- H ospital M ortality for C irrhotic P atients with A KI). The PHM-CPA model was then externally validated in patients from eICU Collaborative Research Database (eICU-CRD) and Medical Information Mart for Intensive Care III dataset (MIMIC). The predictive performance of PHM-CPA model was compared with that of logistic regression (LR) model and 25 previously reported models. Results: A total of 519 cirrhotic patients with AKI were enrolled in model training cohort, of whom 118 (23%) died during hospitalization. Fifteen variables from common laboratory tests were selected to develop the PHM-CPA model. The PHM-CPA model achieved an AUROC of 0.816 (95% CI, 0.763-0.861) in the internal validation cohort and 0.787 (95% CI, 0.745-0.830) in the external validation cohort. The PHM-CPA model consistently outperformed the LR model and 25 previously reported models. Conclusion: We developed and validated the PHM-CPA model, comprising readily available clinical variables, which demonstrated superior performance and calibration in predicting in-hospital mortality for cirrhotic patients with AKI. We study novel multi-stage bargaining games that differ in the timing and efficiency of Stationary Subgame Perfect Equilibrium (SSPE) outcomes, but include the possibility of an equal split in every stage, based on the theory of Merlo and Wilson (1995). Despite this theory's wide application to bargaining in natural environments, our study is the first to rigorously test it using laboratory experiments in both gain and loss domains. In our de-sign, the total surplus to be split within a stage is not a fixed amount, and it can expand or shrink between stages, making delay and inefficiency possible in equilibrium. We find that players regularly agree on the largest available equal split regardless of SSPE predictions. These patterns are well captured by an "Efficient Equality Equilibrium," built on the idea that people share lexicographic preferences for equal-split outcomes. Our results highlight the important interplay of equality and efficiency in bargaining and other conflict resolu-tion environments. In addition, we find that men and women are equally likely to propose equal splits over gains, while male proposers are significantly more selfish over losses.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. A new type of catalyst based on thiol-functionalized fibrous nano-silica material (DFNS-SH) with unique fibrous structure as support and gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) as active sites (DFNS-SH/Au) has been prepared through a facile and environment-friendly self-assembly approach. The synthetic procedure involves the Au NPs prepared in mild conditions instantaneously self-assembled onto the DFNS-SH. The as-synthesized catalyst exhibits a remarkable higher catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol compared with other recently reported related catalysts. Furthermore, DFNS-SH/Au has an outstanding recyclability, after repeated use for many times, obvious activity loss did not occur until the eleventh time. The excellent catalytic activity and robust recyclability are attributed to the synergistic effect between the DFNS-SH and Au NPs. Numerous nano-fibers appear on DFNS-SH, which effectively enhance the mass diffusion and transport in catalytic reactions. Additionally, the enough strong interaction between the Au NPs and thiol groups onto the surface of DFNS can efficiently protect the Au NPs from aggregation and also endow the DFNS-SH/Au with enhanced stability. Thiol groups are also beneficial for improving the Au loading, decreasing the NPs size, reducing their aggregation and improving the catalytic performance of Au NPs anchored on the DFNS-SH as much as possible. This synthetic method discovers an eco-friendly path to effectively prepare low-budget Au-based catalysts and is promising for the development of other excellent materials.

Background Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are involved in the progression of osteoporosis;however, their impact on osteogenic differentiation has yet to be fully elucidated. In this study, we identified a novel circRNA known as circZfp644-205 and investigated its effect on osteogenic differentiation and apoptosis in *** CircZfp644-205, miR-445-3p, and SMAD2 levels were measured using quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). MC3T3-E1 cells were subjected to microgravity (MG) to establish a cell model. Osteogenic differentiation was assessed using qRT-PCR, Alizarin Red S staining, alkaline phosphatase staining, and western blot. The apoptosis was evaluated using flow cytometry. The relationship between miR-445-3p and circZfp644-205 or SMAD2 was determined using bioinformatics, RNA pull-down, and luciferase reporter assay. Moreover, a hindlimb unloading mouse model was generated to investigate the role of circZfp644-205 in vivo using *** CircZfp644-205 expression was up-regulated significantly in HG-treated MC3T3-E1 cells. Further in vitro studies confirmed that circZfp644-205 knockdown inhibited the osteogenic differentiation and induced apoptosis of pre-osteoblasts. CircZfp644-205 acted as a sponge for miR-455-3p, which reversed the effects of circZfp644-205 on pre-osteoblasts. Moreover, miR-455-3p directly targeted SMAD2, thus inhibiting the expression of SMAD2 to regulate cellular behaviors. The Mediating Effect of Resilience on the Relationship Between Symptom Burden and Anxiety/Depression Among Chinese Patients with Primary liver Cancer After liver Resection

Purpose: Primary liver cancer (PLC) is a common cancer of the digestive system. Patients with PLC often experience a heavy symptom burden and along with a significant levels of anxiety and depression after liver resection. High levels of symptom burden can lead to increased anxiety and depression, whereas high levels of resilience can alleviate these conditions. Therefore, we aimed to explore the relationships among symptom burden, resilience, and anxiety/depression in Chinese patients with PLC after liver resection and to determine whether resilience mediates the relationship between symptom burden and anxiety/*** and Methods: A total of 223 postoperative PLC patients were recruited from two public hospitals in Anhui Province, China. All participants completed the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC). The mediating effect of resilience was estimated using the bootstrap method viaResults: The mean HADS score was 12.37 +/- 6.03 points in postoperative PLC patients. Among these patients, 78 (34.98%) had anxiety, and 64 (28.70%) had depression, as indicated by a subscale score >= 8. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that anxiety/ depression was positively associated with symptom burden (p < 0.05) and negatively associated with resilience (p < 0.05). Furthermore, resilience partially mediated the relationship between symptom burden and anxiety/depression (beta = 0.04;95% confidence interval: 0.01-0.08). Conclusion: The levels of anxiety and depression in postoperative PLC patients should be decreased. Resilience partially mediated the relationship between symptom burden and anxiety/depression, but the indirect effect was much weaker than the direct effect of symptom burden on anxiety/depression.
