An Explainable Deep Learning Model for Daily Sea Ice Concentration Forecast

As Arctic sea ice rapidly declines, accurate daily sea ice concentration (SIC) forecasts become crucial for Arctic research and operations. Emerging deep learning (DL) forecast models have the advantage of consuming fewer computational resources compared with numerical forecast systems. However, DL forecast models face challenges of lacking sea ice domain knowledge, low forecast accuracy in the marginal ice zone (MIZ), and poor explainability. This study proposes an explainable DL model, SIFNet, for daily Arctic SIC forecasts, which considers the domain knowledge of teleconnections and lagged correlations by integrating the convolutional block attention module (CBAM) and temporal feature convolution module (TFCM). To improve SIFNet's accuracy in the MIZ, an MIZ-weighted loss function is used for fine-tuning, leading to a notable 1.36% reduction in the mean absolute error (MAE) of MIZ forecasts (MIZ MAE). In the January 2020-December 2023 test scenario, forecasting SIC for the future 49 days using the past 21 days' data, SIFNet demonstrates forecast accuracies with the MAE of 4.69%, binary accuracy (BACC) of 95.16%, structural similarity index (SSIM) of 95.13%, and MIZ MAE of 18.22%. Compared with the other two DL models and nine numerical forecast systems, SIFNet's forecasts achieve higher accuracies. Using layerwise relevance propagation (LRP) technique, the LRP- $\vert z\vert $ rule is constructed to improve SIFNet's explainability. During Arctic minimum sea ice extent (SIE) periods, SIFNet forecasts confirm upward and downward surface solar radiation as predictors for minimum SIE. Similarly, over the past 30 years, precipitation phase is considered a potentially significant factor influencing SIC forecasts.

Near-infrared light-actuated on-demand botanicals release and hyperthermia by an antibiotic-free polysaccharide-based hydrogel dressing for the synergistic treatment of wound infections

Bacterial infection is a key factor affecting wound healing. Conventional treatments might lead to the widespread emergence of drug-resistant bacteria due to the long-term and excessive use of antibiotics. It is necessary to develop an antibiotic-free method for effective treatment of bacterial wound infections. In this work, we constructed an antibiotic-free polysaccharide-based hydrogel dressing (ATB) with near-infrared light-actuated on-demand botanicals release and hyperthermia for the synergistic treatment of wound infections. The ATB hydrogel dressing was made up of agarose as a support matrix, berberine hydrochloride as the active botanicals and TA-Fe(iii) nanoparticles as NIR laser-activated photothermal reagents. The ATB hydrogel dressing showed spatiotemporal botanicals release and excellent photothermal properties with NIR irradiation. With the results of in vitro and in vivo antibacterial experiments, the antibiotic-free ATB hydrogel could synergistically eliminate bacteria and accelerate wound healing. Overall, the near-infrared light-responsive ATB hydrogel could provide a promising antibiotic-free strategy for the treatment of bacterial wound infections. In this work, we constructed an antibiotic-free polysaccharide-based hydrogel dressing (ATB) with near-infrared light-actuated on-demand botanicals release and hyperthermia for the synergistic treatment of wound infections.

Activated proton storage in molybdenum selenide via nanostructure molecular engineering

Layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are ideal candidates for aqueous zinc-based batteries due to their large layer spacing and high theoretical capacity. However, its development is limited by inert basal planes and slow kinetics. Herein, MoSe2 with hollow nanotube structure is successfully prepared using a molecular structure engineering strategy. The hollow nanotube structure with large surface area not only enlarges the storage space for ions and provides sufficient active reaction sites, but also successfully activates the storage behavior of protons. In situ and ex situ characterization results reveal the energy storage mechanism of the coinsertion of protons and zinc ions. Theoretical calculations and systematic studies provide insights into the positive effects of hollow nanotube structures designed through molecular engineering strategies on the electrode reaction kinetics. These advantages enable the MoSe2 hollow nanotube to exhibit desirable electrochemical performance in aqueous zinc ions batteries. This work provides an effective strategy to promote the application of TMDs in aqueous zinc-based energy storage systems.

Microcirculatory disturbance: A new mechanism of brain swelling after traumatic brain injury?

The mechanism of traumatic brain swelling has not been fully studied, and various existing theories lack strong experimental evidence. Through comprehensive analysis of current theories, it was found that microcirculation disturbance may be an important mechanism in the early stage of traumatic brain swelling. Therefore, we hypothesized that in patients with severe brain injury, partial cerebral venous return decreases, and the cerebral blood flow rate decreases. Due to hematoma, high cranial pressure, hypoxia and other factors, the cells in the neurovascular unit express certain factors, further contracting microcirculation blood vessels through pericyte contraction and obstructing blood flow, resulting in unbalanced cerebral circulation intake and outflow. Excessive vascular congestion occurs in brain tissue, which in turn increases cerebral edema and eventual brain swelling. The purpose of this hypothesis is to supplement the shortcomings of current theories and provide new directions and suggestions for future research on traumatic brain swelling.

Non thermoplastic 3D molding based on coordination crosslinking for on-demand customization carboxymethyl chitosan-based packaging bags

The exhaustion of non-renewable resource and the environment pollution of plastic wastes have become a global crisis. Natural polysaccharide is expected to be sustainable and biodegradable alternative to petroleum-based plastics. However, the thermal processing of polysaccharides especially 3D film formation is challenging due to their lack of thermoplasticity. Herein, a novel reverse mold crosslinking film-forming strategy for the preparation of polysaccharide-based 3D film was proposed, where the role of rapid crosslinking molding is similar to that of cooling molding during injecting processing. Through this non-thermal processing, carboxymethyl chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol/Zn (CMCS/PVA/Zn) 3D films were successfully prepared. The CMCS/PVA/Zn exhibits excellent mechanical performance, water resistance, and transparency, meeting the performance requirement in food packaging bags. Moreover, CMCS/PVA/Zn can be customized on-demand, such as shape, size, color, and function, by adjusting the mold or adding functional additive. Notable, multiple carboxyl polysaccharides and metal ions can be used for the preparation of 3D films by this non-thermal processing method, showing great universality. And this method is more energy-efficient than thermal processing and preservers the bioactivity of polysaccharides and additives. Therefore, this innovative approach to polysaccharide processing offers a promising potential for the creation of polysaccharide-based food packaging bags as a sustainable alternative to non-degradable plastic bags.

Transforming Polymorphs via Meniscus-Assisted Solution-Shearing Conjugated Polymers for Organic Field-Effect Transistors

The ability to tune polymorphs of conjugated polymers affords a robust platform for investigating the processing-structure-property relationship. However, simple and generalizable routes to polymorphs have yet to be realized. Herein, we report a viable meniscus-assisted solution-shearing (MASS) strategy to effectively modulate polymorphs (i.e., polymorphs I and II) of poly(3-butylthiophene) (P3BT) and scrutinize the correlation between the two different polymorphs and charge transport characteristics. Specifically, polymorph II exists solely in drop-cast P3BT films. Intriguingly, confined shearing of P3BT renders efficient transformation of polymorph II to I. The kinetics of polymorph transformation associated with the changes in molecular packing and thus photophysical properties are elucidated. The resulting organic field-effect transistors reveal a strong correlation of device performance to attained polymorphs and crystal orientations of P3BT. Such polymorph transformation via the convenient MASS technique can be readily extended to other conjugated polymers of interest. This study highlights the robustness of MASS in regulating polymorphs of conjugated polymers to interrogate their interdependence of processing, structure, and property for a wide range of optoelectronic applications.

Degradation of bisphenol A by Fe-doped BiOBr enhanced UV/persulfate system: Significant role of superoxide radicals

Widely diffused pollution of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) has indeed threatened the safety of ecological environment and human health. A hydrangea-like Fe doped BiOBr (Fe-BiOBr) microsphere was synthesized and used to enhance the performance of UV/persulfate (PS) system using bisphenol A (BPA) as the targeted contaminant. The photochemical characterization of Fe-BiOBr showed that Fe doping markedly improved the separation efficiency of photoelectron and hole, and enhanced the utility rate of luminous energy of BiOBr. Degradation test demonstrated that with the assistance of Fe-BiOBr, the efficiency of UV/PS system was increased by 1.8 times, while 85.7% of BPA can be degraded within 10 min. Through scavenging experiments, sulfate radical (SO4 center dot-), superoxide radical (O2 center dot-), and hole were demonstrated as the dominate reactive species (RSs) in UV/Fe-BiOBr/PS system. Then, the role and mutual transformation of RSs was further clarified by radicals steady-state concentrations estimation and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. Based on the results, the produced O2 center dot-can be subdivided into confined O2 center dot-and free O2 center dot-from the UV induced oxygen vacancy and photoelectron, respectively. Of which, SO4 center dot-and confined O2 center dot-were symbiotic via the redox cycle of Fe species. Significantly, only 2.6% of TOC can be simultaneously removed within 10 min treatment time, suggesting the incomplete degradation of BPA. For this, 16 organics was detected using LC-MS and the degradation route of BPA was also determined based on the intermediates analysis. Finally, the application possibility of the system was evaluated from the perspective of ecotoxicity by ECOSAR and T.E.S.T. softwares. This study investigates the dual effect of transition metal doped semiconductor on coupling system, and provides new in-sights into the role of O2 center dot-.

The Material Basis for the Beneficial Effects of Paidu Powder on Hyperuricemia: A Network Pharmacology and Clinical Study

Background: Paidu powder (PDP) is a formula that is used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practices and has been demonstrated to be effective to lower blood uric acid (UA) level. Methods: Network pharmacology was employed to probe the mechanistic basis for the beneficial effects of PDP. Then, PDP was subjected to Aspergillus oryza AS3.042 fermentation, and the primary bioactive compounds in the resultant samples were analyzed via HPLC. A clinical study was then performed to test the therapeutic effects of unfermented and fermented PDP on HUA. Results: Network pharmacology strategies identified 122 active compounds and 924 HUA-related target genes, with 61 overlapping targets relative to PDP and HUA ultimately being selected. These target genes were associated with 474 GO biological process terms and 136 KEGG pathways. Moreover, good binding was observed between three main bioactive compounds of interest and nine primary target proteins. Notably, the levels of the top three bioactive compounds (quercetin, kaempferol, and naringenin) were significantly elevated by 308.96%, 1386.44%, and 719.21%, respectively, following fermentation. Clinical analyses indicated that both PDP and fermented PDP treatment significantly reduced UA, CRE, and BUN levels (p < 0.01), with a higher overall efficacy rate in the fermented PDP group relative to the unfermented PDP group (p < 0.01). Fewer adverse reactions were also observed in the fermented PDP group. Conclusion: These results offer novel insights into the putative mechanisms through which PDP can exert its beneficial effects against HUA, offering a novel basis for the identification of the pharmacological effects of this popular TCM prescription.

Universal screening and treatment towards the elimination of chronic hepatitis C in China: an economic evaluation

Objectives: China has the largest number of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in the world, but current levels of diagnosis and treatment are low. The objective of this study was to assess the cost-effectiveness of various universal HCV screening and treatment strategies in China and inform decisions on health policy. Study design: A cost-effectiveness analytical study. Methods: We developed a Markov model to investigate cost-effectiveness of different HCV screening and treatment strategies in China. We simulated several screening scenarios for Chinese people aged 18-70 years. We estimated incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) of different intervention scenarios compared with status quo. Results: Expanded HCV screening and treatment strategy with prioritisation for high-risk groups (Scenario S5) was the most cost-effective strategy (ICER: USD $11,667.71/quality-adjusted life-year [QALY] gained), which resulted in great reduction in HCV-related diseases and deaths, with a 67.11% reduction in cases of chronic HCV. Universal HCV screening and treatment implementation remains a cost-effective strategy when delayed until 2025 (ICER: USD $17,093.69/QALY), yet the delayed strategy is less effective in reducing HCV-related deaths. Conclusions: Expanded HCV screening and treatment strategy with prioritisation for high-risk groups is the most cost-effective strategy and has lead to a significant reduction in both HCV morbidity and mortality in China, which would essentially eliminate HCV as a public threat.
