Compact micro-Pirani vacuum sensor based on series diodes without heating structure

Diode based micro-Pirani vacuum sensors attract considerable attention because they do not require special materials and are compatible with complementary metal oxide semiconductors (CMOS). However, their complex heating structure makes it difficult to reduce the sensor size. This paper reports a novel compact micro-Pirani vacuum sensor based on series diodes. The self-heating effect of the series diodes helps simplify the structural design by avoiding a dedicated heating structure. Moreover, the small size of the series diodes ensures high temperature coefficient. The proposed design reduces the sensor size without sacrificing the performance. In fact, simulation results indicate that the series diodes help enhance the device performance. A sensor was fabricated by a CMOS compatible process. The sensor size was reduced significantly to 35 mu m x 35 mu m. The sensor is sensitive to the vacuum pressure range from 10(-1) Pa to 10(4) Pa when driven by a constant current as small as 10 mu A, and the power consumption is low at 50 mu W. Silk fabrics have poor resistance to ultraviolet(UV) light and to *** improve these properties,we propose a finishing method of coating the silk fabric surface with nano-silica(nano-SiO2).The results show that the UV protective factor(UPF) value could reach a maximum of 84.52 after finishing in 10 g/L nano-SiO2 and 20 g/L silane coupling agent(KH570) solution at ***,the treated silk fabrics showed improved wrinkle resistance and *** surface morphology and crosslink action of the treated silk fabrics were characterized by scanning electron microscope,energy dispersive spectrometer and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,which proved that nano-SiO2 particles were grafted on to the silk *** was no apparent difference in color between untreated and treated silk *** stability and cytotoxicity tests showed that the treated silk fabrics had good thermostability and *** UPF value could be maintained at 77.31 after washing 20 times,which demonstrated that the treated silk fabrics had laundry *** silk fabrics with good hydrophobic properties and excellent UV and wrinkle resistance were developed,showing good prospects for their application in self-cleaning,protective and non-ironing clothes.

Genome-wide identification and characterization of myosin genes in the silkworm, Bombyx mori

Myosins are a large family of actin filament-based motor proteins with a broad range of functions such as intracellular membrane trafficking, endocytosis, exocytosis, organellar transport, growth cone motility, cytokinesis, and cell locomotion. They are found in many organisms from fungi to humans. The myosin gene family in Bombyx mori is poorly studied, even though the molecular functions of these genes in vertebrates and insects, such as Drosophila, are well known. We identified 16 myosin genes from B. mori and identified the myosin genes in 12 vertebrates, eight insects, three nematodes, and seven protozoa. The number of myosin genes in vertebrates is double the number in invertebrates. The number of myosin isoforms in classes I and II is larger in vertebrates compared to invertebrates. B. mori myosin genes can be classified into 11 classes. Compared to B. mori, some myosin classes are not present in other insects. Classes I, II, XVIII, and XXI appear to be important for insect survival because they are conserved among nine insects. The relatively large sizes of B. mori myosin genes are due to their longer introns. Reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) and quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis demonstrated that many B. mori myosin genes have tissue-specific expression and exhibit temporal specific activity during metamorphosis. These data provide insights into evolutionary and functional aspects of B. mori myosin genes that could be useful for the study of homologous myosins in other Lepidoptera species.

Toxicity, biodistribution and oxidative damage caused by zirconia nanoparticles after intravenous injection

Background: As a promising nanomaterial for biomedical applications, zirconia nanoparticles (ZrO2) have aroused concern recently, but the toxicity of ZrO2 in vivo has received little attention. Purpose: The aim of this study is to demonstrate the systematic single dose toxicity, biodistribution and oxidative damage of ZrO2 in vivo after intravenous injection in mice. Materials and methods: Ten ICR mice were used at the high dose of ZrO2 including 600, 500, 400 and 300mg/kg. Maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of 150 nm ZrO2 was determined as 500mg/kg. Hematology analysis and blood biochemical assay were determined for the evaluation of oxidative damage caused by ZrO2. Biodistribution of ZrO2 was investigated by ICP-OES and TEM. Results: Mice treated with higher dose (500mg/kg) showed significant spread in white blood cell counts (p<0.05). Especially, the serum ALT levels of 500mg/kg groups increased significantly (p<0.05) compared with the control group. ZrO2 particles would not induce any changes in appearance and micromorphology of liver at 100 and 350mg/kg. Spleen samples showed no significant changes in micromorphology of the lymphoid follicles and in the size of the red pulp after injection of ZrO2 at all doses. The serum of ZrO2-treated animals (350 and 500mg/kg) has reduced levels of SOD compared to the control group (p<0.05). ZrO2 persists in membrane-enclosed vesicles called lysosomes in the liver and spleen macrophages without abnormal changes of ultrastructure. Conclusion: These findings would contribute to the future development of ZrO2-based drug delivery system and other biomedical applications.

Urban spatial structure and travel patterns: Analysis of workday and holiday travel using inhomogeneous Poisson point process models

City land-use features and travel behavior are mutually related and restricted. This research attempts to model the spatial-temporal travel patterns based on spatial point pattern theory. Using a twelve-day private automobile data set collected in Beijing, we systematically investigate the temporal variations of trip-destination distributions, and their association with city spatial structure. The availability of detailed POIs (Points of Interest) data enables us to study the effect of city structure on travel pattern at a refined level. Four types of inhomogeneous Poisson point process models are built to capture the impacts on human mobility posed by spatial covariates. Residual analysis, inhomogeneous K function and leverage diagnostic tools are further adopted to validate the model performance and determine the best fitted model. The validation results indicate that the proposed model reasonably explains the travel patterns in both holiday and workday throughout the city. The inclusion of Cartesian coordinates, population distribution, and city subdivision-category improves the model performance. The empirical results based on the dataset also reveal the differences in impacts on travel patterns posed by underlying city structure between holidays and weekdays as well as between citywide districts. The modeling method and the exploratory spatial-temporal analysis in this study can offer complementary techniques for traffic management and urban planning.

Topical application of silk fibroin-based hydrogel in preventing hypertrophic scars

Current medications for the treatment of hypertrophic scars suffer from bottlenecks of limited therapeutic efficacy and a slow recovery rate. Silk fibroin (SF) has gained attention for its ability to promote wound healing in burns and cutaneous wounds, but its therapeutic effects against hypertrophic scar have not been thoroughly investigated. We prepared SF-based hydrogels (SFHs) with various SF concentrations (1.5 %, 3 %, and 6 %) and characterized their physicochemical properties. Cell experiments showed that these SFHs had favorable biocompatibility in vitro. Further animal experiments in rabbits revealed that the SFH (3 %)-treated group achieved scars on their ears that were thinner and significantly lighter in color compared with the negative control group. Moreover, treatment with SFHs reduced the density and led to the orderly arrangement of collagen fibers. It was found that the therapeutic effects of SFHs were attributed to the reduced expression levels of alpha-smooth muscle actin. These results are the first to demonstrate that SFH can be exploited as an effective therapeutic agent for the treatment of hypertrophic scars.

The requirement for the favorable therapeutics against ulcerative colitis (UC) is that anti-inflammatory drugs can be specifically internalized by macrophages and subsequently be on-demand released to suppress inflammation. Herein, we developed a type of multi-bioresponsive anti-inflammatory drug (curcumin, CUR)-loaded nanoparticles (NPs) that were derived from natural silk fibroin and followed by surface functionalization with chondroitin sulfate (CS). The generated CS-CUR-NPs had a desired average particle size (175.4 nm), a uniform size distribution and negative surface charge (-35.5 mV). Strikingly, these NPs exhibited excellent bioresponsibility when triggered with the intrinsic stimuli (acidity, glutathione and reactive oxygen species) within activated macrophages, indicating that they could conceivably confer the on-demand intracellular drug release. Furthermore, we found that CS functionalization yielded notably targeted drug delivery to macrophages, and thereby enhanced the anti-inflammatory activities of NPs. Most importantly, animal experiments revealed that these nanotherapeutics could remarkably alleviate the symptoms of UC, maintain the homeostasis of intestinal microbiota and improve the survival rate of mice with UC through the route of oral administration or intravenous injection. Our results suggest that these facilely fabricated CS-CUR-NPs, which exhibit excellent biocompatibility, multi-bioresponsive drug release and macrophage-targeted capacity, could be exploited as a promising therapeutic platform for clinical UC treatment.

Emulsifying behaviors and interfacial properties of different protein/gum arabic complexes: Effect of pH

Emulsifying behaviors and interfacial properties were two key properties related to microencapsulation processes. This study mainly focused on the above characters of soy proteins/gum arabic (SP/GA) complexes and gelatin/GA complexes. The complexes were prepared at different forming stages (i.e., at pH(phi 1), pH(opt) and pH(pd)) with 1:1 protein/GA ratio. The results revealed the emulsifying activity (EA) for SP/GA systems was higher than that for gelatin/GA systems, indicating its better combining capacity with oil droplets. While SP/GA systems showed lower interfacial tensions (21-25 mN/m) than gelatin/GA systems. Through analysis of interfacial tensions and EA data, negative correlations between them were found: the higher the interfacial tensions of complexes with oil droplet, the lower the EA was. Compositional analysis indicated different yield and polymer recovery were obtained at different systems due to zeta potential differences. These findings suggested SP/GA complexes could be used as effective microencapsulated materials in terms of oil combining. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effect of calcium formate as an additive on desulfurization in power plants

SO2 in flue gas needs to be eliminated to alleviate air pollution. As the quality of coal decreases and environmental standard requirements become more stringent, the highefficiency desulfurization of flue gas faces more and more challenges. As an economical and environmentally friendly solution, the effect of calcium formate as an additive on desulfurization efficiency in the wet flue gas desulfurization（WFGD） process was studied for the first time. Improvement of the desulfurization efficiency was achieved with limited change in p H after calcium formate was added into the reactor, and it was found to work better than other additives tested. The positive effects were further verified in a power plant, which showed that adding calcium formate could promote the dissolution of calcium carbonate, accelerate the growth of gypsum crystals and improve the efficiency of desulfurization. Thus, calcium formate was proved to be an effective additive and can potentially be used to reduce the amount of limestone slurry required, as well as the energy consumption and operating costs in industrial desulfurization.
