Preparation of CeO₂-ZrO₂-Al₂O₃ composite with layered structure for improved Pd-only three-way catalyst

In this study, two CeO2-ZrO2-Al2O3 composites with layered structure were prepared by sequential precipitation route (SP) and compared with that obtained from conventional coprecipitation method (CC). The structural, textural and redox properties of the Pd-supported three-way catalysts were investigated by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), N-2 adsorption-desorption, CO chemical adsorption, H-2-temperature-programmed reduction and oxygen storage capacity (OSC). By adjusting the precipitation sequence of CZ and Al2O3 components, different combination styles of CZ and Al2O3 as well as different interaction between the two components are obtained, which consequently modifies the physicochemical properties, catalytic performance along with the thermal stability of the supported Pd/CeO2-ZrO2-Al2O3 catalysts. The catalysts derived from SP present comparable structural and textural thermal stability compared to that obtained from CC. From the aspects of XPS, TPR and OSC, more Ce3+ and improved redox properties are created by SP with respect to CC. In addition, the dispersion of palladium is enhanced due to the strongmetal-support interaction. The catalytic performance evaluation results reveal that SP method leads to the formation of three-way catalysts with advanced catalytic activities for C3H8, CO and NO conversions especially when CZ is enriched in the outer layer.

Motivation: Advances in neuroimaging and sequencing techniques provide an unprecedented opportunity to map the function of brain regions and identify the roots of psychiatric diseases. However, the results from most neuroimaging studies, i.e. activated clusters/regions or functional connectivities between brain regions, frequently cannot be conveniently and systematically interpreted, rendering the biological meaning unclear. Results: We describe a brain annotation toolbox that generates functional and genetic annotations for neuroimaging results. The voxel-level functional description from the Neurosynth database and gene expression profile from the Allen Human Brain Atlas are used to generate functional/genetic information for region-level neuroimaging results. The validity of the approach is demonstrated by showing that the functional and genetic annotations for specific brain regions are consistent with each other;and further the region by region functional similarity network and genetic similarity network are highly correlated for major brain atlases. One application of brain annotation toolbox is to help provide functional/genetic annotations for newly discovered regions with unknown functions, e.g. the 97 new regions identified in the Human Connectome Project. Importantly, this toolbox can help understand differences between psychiatric patients and controls, and this is demonstrated using schizophrenia and autism data, for which the functional and genetic annotations for the neuroimaging changes in patients are consistent with each other and help interpret the results.

Induced pluripotent cell mass plays a role in genetic transformation mediated by Agrobacterium. Mature seeds are more recalcitrant to the induction of suitable calli than immature embryos in rice, but the exact molecular mechanisms involved remain elusive. In this study, the morphological structure of calli induced from mature seeds and immature embryos were observed under a scanning electron microscope using a paraffin embedded technique. Meanwhile, a total of 2 173 up- and down-regulated genes were identified in calli induced from mature seeds and immature embryos by RNA-seq technique and furtherly confirmed by quantitative real-time PCR. The results revealed the remarkable morphological differences in calli induced from mature seeds and immature embryos, and plant hormone signal transduction and hormone biosynthesis pathways, such as abscisic acid, salicylic acid and jasmonic-isoleucine, were found to play roles in somatic embryogenesis. This study provided comprehensive gene expression sets for mature seeds and immature embryos that were served as an important platform resource for further functional studies in plant embryogenesis.

Cuticular protein defective Bamboo mutant of Bombyx mori is sensitive to environmental stresses

Insect cuticle acts as a primary protective barrier against environment stresses that may directly impact the insect body. Here, we report the mechanical defense function of a structural cuticular protein, BmorCPH24, to environmental stresses using a silkworm Bamboo (Bo) mutant with this gene mutation. Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation and topical application of an acetone insecticide were used as environmental stresses to determine the differences in susceptibility between Bo and wild-type larvae. UV irradiation resulted in a sunburn phenotype in the Bo strains earlier than the wild-type indicating the sensitivity of Bo. higher malondialdehyde (MDA) content and a lower survival ratio were also observed in the Bo strains. Treatment with deltamethrin revealed that Bo larvae were more sensitive to insecticides than the wild-type. Furthermore, cuticle analysis by microsection revealed thinner cuticle and a significant decrease in the endocuticle layer (similar to 64.0%) in Bo. These results suggest that BmorCPH24 mutation can lead to deficiency in resources required to construct the cuticle in Bo resulting in thin cuticle and reduced resistance to UV and insecticides. These results provide us new insight into the role of structural cuticular proteins in insect cuticle against environment stresses.

The release regulations of nitrogen oxides (NOx) during the sintering process have been studied in this paper, and the factors of NOx release were systematically investigated, such as sinter temperature, coke content, and basicity. Results indicated that NOx produced from sintering includes NO, NO2, and N2O. Analysis on the material composition suggested that the NOx concentration was mainly related to the sinter temperature and the N content of the coke breeze. The material accouting of sintering mixture on N element indicated that 94.59% of NOx in sintering flue gas are fuel NOx

Assessment of the cytotoxic and mutagenic potential of the Jialu River and adjacent groundwater using human-hamster hybrid cells

The Jialu River in china has been seriously polluted by the direct discharge of industrial and domestic wastewater. The predominant contaminants of the Jialu River and its adjacent groundwater were recently investigated. However, the potential genotoxic impact of polluted water on human health remains to be clarified. Here, we used human–hamster hybrid（AL） cells, which are sensitive for detecting environmental mutagens. We found that the cytotoxicity and mutagenicity of the groundwater in the Jialu River basin were influenced by the infiltration of the Jialu River. Hydrological periods significantly affected the cytotoxicity, but not the mutagenic potential, of surface and groundwater. Further, the mutagenic potential of groundwater samples located 〈 1 km from the Jialu River（S（M-2） water samples） was detected earlier than that of groundwater samples located approximately 20 km from the Jialu River（SN water samples）. Because of high cytotoxicity, the mutagenic potential of water samples from the Jialu River（S（M-1） water samples） was not significantly enhanced compared with that of untreated controls. To further assess the mutagenic dispersion potential, an artificial neural network model was adopted. The results showed that the highest mutagenic potential of groundwater was observed approximately 10 km from the Jialu River. Although further investigation of mutagenic spatial dispersion is required, our data are significant for advancing our understanding of the origin, dispersion,and biological effects of water samples from polluted areas.

A phytochemical study of the EtOAc extract of Ligularia rumicifolia (***.) *** led to the isolation of two new monoterpene lactones (1-2) named (2S,3S,5R)-5-ethyl-2,3-dimethyl-6-oxoterahydro-2H-pyran-2-carboxylic acid and (2S,3S,5R)-5-ethyl-2,3-dimethyl-6-oxoterahydro-2H-pyran-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester, along with nine known compounds (3-11). All compounds were isolated from this species for the first time. Their structures were established on the basis of spectroscopic methods. The cytotoxic activity of Compound 2 was weak, with the lowest IC50 value of 80.84 mu M against MCF-7 cells. Compound 1 exhibited better anti-proliferative activities against MCF-7, T-24, HepG-2 and SKOV-3 cell lines than Compound 2, with the lowest IC50 value of 66.12 mu M against MCF-7 cells.

A novel approach for acquiring the real-time energy efficiency of machine tools

Machine tools (MT), as the key equipment of manufacturing industry, have enormous quantity and consume great amount of energy. In order to achieve consistent improvement of energy efficiency and environmental performance in manufacturing industry, it is significant to acquire the real-time energy efficiency (REE) of MT. However, due to the unavailable parameters and the limitations of using cutting force-measuring instruments, it is difficult for existing methods to be applied to acquire the REE of MT. This paper proposes a novel approach for acquiring the REE without any usage of cutting-force measuring instruments. To develop this approach, a model to characterize the relationship among the REE, input power and spindle speed of MT is established based on the basic data of MT. After obtaining these basic data, this approach only requires obtaining the spindle speed and input power to calculate the REE of MT. It has been tested and validated on a common used machine tool, and the results show its practicability and high level of accuracy for obtaining the REE of MT. This approach can be applied to assess the energy efficiency of MT, to support designers to design high-efficient MT and users to improve the energy efficiency of manufacturing process. A region-based intra-frame rate control scheme by jointing inter-frame dependency and inter-frame correlation

During I frame switching, the subjective quality between I frame and P frames usually have obvious fluctuation due to different coding methods. The periodic temporal visual fluctuation will cause video flicker. According to extensive experiments, we observe that I frame flicker possess a strong regional characteristics and different region have different degree of flicker. Based on this observation, a region-based I frame rate control scheme is proposed to suppress I frame flicker according to the different characteristics of the moving and non-moving regions. Firstly, by jointly considering the inter-frame dependency between I frame and subsequent un-encoded P frames and the inter-frame correlation between I frame and previous encoded P frame, an optimization model is proposed to achieve the optimal QPs for different regions. Secondly, a region-based inter-frame dependency model is proposed to separately describe the inter-frame dependency of different regions, which can accurately describe their description of the inter-frame dependency. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed scheme can efficiently suppress I frame flicker and maintain the smoothness of subjective quality. Moreover, the proposed scheme can achieve a PSNR gain by 0.26 dB on average when compared with the rate control scheme adopted by the HEVC reference software HM15.0.

Characteristics of soy protein isolate/gum arabic-stabilized oil-in-water emulsions: influence of different preparation routes and pH

The properties of oil-in-water emulsions containing soy protein isolate (SPI) with or without gum arabic (GA) have been studied under different pH and different preparation routes. Three routes were used for the preparation of emulsions (10% (w/v) oil and 0.5% (w/v) SPI with or without 0.5% (w/v) GA). In emulsions I, SPI solution with/without GA were first pH adjusted followed by homogenization with oil;in emulsions II, the oil was directly emulsified with SPI-GA coacervates at pH 4.0 to form the 'mixed emulsions', then pH was adjusted;in emulsions III, GA was added to a SPI-stabilized emulsion followed by pH adjustment. The results showed that pH adjustment before or after homogenization with oil greatly influenced the droplet size and emulsifying stability whether for the SPI emulsions or SPI/GA emulsions. The emulsions III showed much slower flocculation rate and higher emulsifying stability at pH 4.0-7.0. The microstructures of SPI-GA emulsion III were more uniform, with the comparably smallest d(43) values in the presence of SDS. It could be indicated that the preparation routes of emulsions greatly influenced the stability of SPI-control emulsion or SPI-GA emulsion.
