The iron and manganese absorption properties of several filter media were studied. Four plain filter media and six surface-modified media were examined. The surface modification was performed using potassium permanganate as a surface treatment. The surface-modified manganese sand was found to be most efficient at removing iron and manganese from water. The metal concentrations in filtered effluent were between 0.01 and 0.04 mg/L, which is far lower than the standard for recycle water. A concen-tration of 5% KMnO4 was found to be most effective as surface modifier. The surface of the manganese sand modified by 5% KMnO4 was examined and found to be covered with a dense membrane of some compound. The membrane had the advantages of uniform texture, large surface area and physical and chemical stability. It was effective at removing iron and manganese from mine water.

The newly developed multi-protocol label switching transport profile (MPLS-TP) fails to actively alarm the fault in advance when conducting restoration in network, or to avoid the false-alarm when equipped with the active-fault-alarm (AFA) to support carrier-grade reliability. In order to solve this problem, a new AFA based pre-restoration mechanism (AFABPRM) is proposed for MPLS-TP controlled optical network, along with the three levels quality-of-service (QoS) based shortest path first rerouting algorithm (TQ-SPF) in this article. The AFABPRM takes full advantage of the AFA technologies, and can solve the false-alarm problem. Analytical and experimental results suggest the better performances of the new mechanism when compared restoration mechanism with or without AFA function, and show that the AFABPRM can solve the false-alarm problem efficiently.

The nanocrystalline Mg2Ni-type alloys with nominal compositions of Mg20Ni10-xCux (x = 0-4) are synthesized by melt-spinning technique. The microstructures of the as-cast and spun alloys are characterized by XRD, SEM and HRTEM. The hydrogen absorption and desorption kinetics of the alloys are measured using an automatically controlled Sieverts apparatus. The electrochemical performances are tested by an automatic galvanostatic system. The results show that all the as-spun alloys hold typical nanocrystalline structure. The substitution of Cu for Ni does not change the major phase Mg2Ni. The hydrogen absorption capacity of the alloys first increases and then decreases with rising Cu content, but the hydrogen desorption capacity of the alloys always grows with increasing Cu content. Furthermore, the substitution of Cu for Ni significantly improves the electrochemical hydrogen storage performances of the alloys, involving both the discharge capacity and the electrochemical cycle stability. In Pub/Sub systems, channel-based approaches to routing the subscriptions and events have many advantages such as fewer routing messages, lower costs for subscription management, etc. But a potential issue embedded in this kind of approach, i.e. loadings on different event brokers are apt to unbalancing, is ignored more or less. In this paper, we design a load balancing mechanism and integrate it into a channel-based approach in a Pub/Sub system. In particular, we define a balancing state in a Pub/Sub system, and then propose the balancing control initiation algorithm which decides not only whether to perform load balancing among event brokers but also whether to adjust the number of event brokers. Also we present the load scheduling algorithm which can achieve load balancing by channel splitting, merging and migration. We conduct the experiments by taking loads with different distributions as input to reveal the capability of dealing with changing loads. The experimental data prove that our mechanism can help balance the system loads efficiently and dynamically start or shut down event brokers when facing overloads or insufficient loads.

The Toll family of transmembrane proteins mediates signaling during the innate immune response in most animals. Toll9 is widespread in insects and has a unique signature, QHR, in its Toll/interleukin-1 receptor (TIR) domain. The introns in the TIR region are highly conserved among insects, suggesting the antiquity of Toll9 genes. Toll9 of Bombyx mori (BmToll9) was analysed by quantitative real-time RT-PCR. BmToll9 is constitutively expressed in egg, larval and adult stages prior to microbial challenge. BmToll9 is strongly expressed in the different parts of the gut, but weakly expressed in haemocytes, trachea, fat body, malpighian tubule and epidermis, and scarcely expressed in the silk glands. The injection of sterilized 0.85% NaCl solution inhibited BmToll9 expression in most tissues especially during the early responses. Staphylococcus aureus had no or limited effect on the expression of BmToll9 in the silkworm gut and fat body. But in epidermis, trachea, malpighian tubules and haemocytes, the expression of BmToll9 was significantly increased after S. aureus challenge. Infection of Escherichia coli significantly increased the BmToll9 expression in different parts of the gut as well as in epidermis, malpighian tubule and haemocytes. At 48 h after feeding of the fungus, Beauveria bassiana, BmToll9 expression was significantly increased. tissues responses to the injected and ingested bacteria showed that BmToll9 is probably involved in the local gut immune response in the silkworm. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease, which involves hippocampus-mediated cognitive impairment. The present study investigated whether the resting-state functional connectivity of the hippocampus would be changed in patients with T2DM. A region of interest-based resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) approach was applied to explore functional connectivity differences between 21 elderly patients with T2DM and 19 well-matched healthy controls, with all participants assessed by multi-dimensional neuropsychological tests. We found that T2DM patients performed significantly worse in the Auditory Verbal Learning Test (AVLT) (especially for Delayed Recall and Recognition) and Clock Drawing Test (CDT) when compared with the control group, and cognitive function was negatively related to BMI and HbA(1c). Importantly, the hippocampus showed reduced functional connectivity bilaterally to widespread regions, including fusiform gyrus, frontal gyrus, temporal gyrus, anterior cingulate gyrus, medial frontal gyrus, posterior cingulate gyrus, precuneus and inferior parietal lobule in T2DM patients compared to healthy controls. T2DM is associated with an impaired pattern of default network function, and the specific disconnection pattern identified may be involved in the neuropathophysiology of this disease. Sludge dewatering is of major interest in sludge volume reduction and handling properties improvement. Here we report an approach of fluorescence excitation-emission matrix (EEM) combined with parallel factor (PARAFAC) analysis to elucidate the factors that influence sludge dewaterability. Sludge flocs from 11 full-scale wastewater treatment plants were collected to stratify into different extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) fractions and then to characterize their fluorescence EEMs. Both the normalized capillary suction time (CST) and specific resistance to filtration (SRF) were applied to determine sludge dewaterability. The results showed that fluorescence EEMs of tightly bound fractions were not affected by the wastewater sources. In contrast, fluorescence EEMs of loosely bound fractions were affected by the wastewater sources. All the fluorescence EEMs could be successfully decomposed into a six-component model by PARAFAC analysis. Both normalized CST and SRF were significantly correlated with component 1 [excitation/emission (Ex/Em) = (220, 275)/350] in the supernatant fraction, with components 5 [Ex/Em = (230, 280)/430] and 6 [Ex/Em = (250, 360)/460] in the slime and LB-EPS fraction. These results reveal that except for proteins-like substances (component 1), sludge dewaterability is also affected by humic acid-like and fulvic acid-like substances (components 5 and 6) in the slime and LB-EPS fractions. Twenty-four serotypes of bluetongue virus (BTV) have been recognized world wide. Reliable and quantitative assays of virus universal detection are essential for fighting against BT. A real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) with a TaqMan fluorescence probe has been developed for detection of the NS1 gene of different BTV serotypes. In BHK-21 cells, in the assay detected BTV1-22 specifically, and had no cross-reactivity with the closely related epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV) serotypes 1-5. The limit of sensitivity of the assay was 0.1 TCID50/ml for BTV-1 and 102 copies for the control R121/pGEM. Accurate quantitation can be achieved with samples containing between 10(2) and 10(6) copies. The coefficient of variation (CV) of intra-assay and inter-assay ranged from 2.17% to 5.60%. The developed real-time RT-PCR assay showed good coincident rate (99.2%) with duplex RT-PCR in 122 whole blood clinical samples from sheep. Therefore, the real-time RT-PCR can be a reliable method for detection of various serotypes of BTV. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The reliable resistive switching properties of Au/ZrO2/Ag structure fabricated with full room temperature process are demonstrated in this letter. The tested devices show low operation voltages (< 1 V), high resistance ratio (about 10(4)), fast switching speed (50 ns), and reliable data retention (ten years extrapolation at both RT and 85 degrees C). Moreover, the benefits of high yield and multilevel storage possibility make them promising in the next generation nonvolatile memory applications.
