The modern organization, whether it is a business enterprise, a research laboratory, or a government agency, must survive in an information-rich environment. Each daily decision is made and judged according to the quality and availability of information. In management decision making, perhaps more than in any other application, computer graphics technology is approaching full maturity. The computer's information-handling capacities are now being complemented by the ability of hardware and software systems to condense, code, and display information in graphic forms that make large amounts of data comprehensible. As a result, managers can now base plans, decisions, and actions on information that is more complete and timely than was possible before computer graphics entered the picture.

A history background of each method is given and the fundamental ways in which computer graphic images are finished. A description is given of a computer graphics program for detecting errors in three-dimensional finite element models and reducing finite element analysis data to a usable form. An efficient hidden line algorithm for mixed sets of polygons and polyhedra is presented together with a general line classification scheme. They are used to produce the variety of plots necessary to detect errors in the model. They also provide an ″uncluttered″ surface for displaying stress, temperature, and displacement data.

This paper presents efforts undertaken in the field of photo-realistic visualization of natural landscapes using digital evalation models (DEM) and images generated by remote sensing techniques. The remote sensing systems used in this work include Landsat Thematic Mapper, SPOT HRV and aerial photographs. After an appropriate preprocessing, including radiometric corrections and image enhancement procedures, a precise geometric correction is performed in order to achieve a very high co-registration of the images with the elevation model. A mosaic of several images at various resolutions is stored together with the DEM in a data set covering an extensive area. These data are then input to an efficient hardware-independent terrain rendering algorithm based on a forward projection. Atmospheric effects can be simulated. The concept of a virtual scene allows an automated embedding of raytraced 3D objects. The results show that these methods can be used in the field of environmental planning, civil engineering and other applications where terrain visualization is required.
