Ethylene propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber is widely used as seals in automobile door, window and other parts. They are exposed to severe service as well as extreme environmental conditions. Reliability of such rubber parts are thus impaired mainly due to abrasion. In the present work dry abrasive wear of EPDM rubber of three different hardness was studied against silicon carbide abrasive paper under different parametric combinations of loads on job, cycles governing the working time and abrasive grades in a two-body abrasion tester. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) followed by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) was then carried out to appraise the pattern abrasion of worn surfaces and the abrasion mechanisms were discussed and concluded accordingly. Further investigations are needed to deduce eventual correlations, if any, in this regard.
