中华典籍作为国学经典作品,理应成为中华文化传播的先行军,借由翻译的途径积极向异质文化推介。《山海经》是一部具有非凡文献价值的上古百科全书,因其包罗之广,内容之诡被誉为“天下奇书”。全书共十八卷,分为《五藏山经》和《海经》两个部分。该书目前已有七种语言的外译本,其中节译本占多数,而完整的英译本只有三个,吸引了各领域学者的关注。有不少学者从译者主体性、生态翻译学和关联理论等不同角度对其英译本进行研究,但少有学者从译者行为批评角度展开研究。本文在译者行为批评视域下,借助“求真–务实”译者行为连续统评价模式从“务实性求真”、“务实为上,兼顾求真”和“求真性务实”等角度对中国经典《山海经》之王宏英译本进行研究,探究译者翻译行为的动因及策略,以期在中国经典英译中找到一些切实可行且有价值的翻译策略或方法。As the classics of national studies, Chinese classics should be the forerunner of Chinese culture dissemination, and actively promote different cultures through translation. The Classic of Mountains and Seas is an ancient encyclopaedia with extraordinary documentary value. It is known as a “rare book in the world” because of its extensive coverage and paradoxical content. The book consists of 18 volumes and is divided into two parts: The Five Zang Mountain Sutra and The Sea Sutra. At present, the book has been translated into seven languages, of which the verse version accounts for the majority, and the complete English version is only three, which has attracted the attention of scholars in various fields. Many scholars have studied the English translation from different perspectives, such as translator’s subjectivity, ecological translatology and relevance theory, but few have studied it from the perspective of translator’s behavior criticism. From the perspective of translator behavior criticism, this paper studies Wang Hong’s English translation of the Chinese classic The Classic of Mountains and Seas from the perspectives of “pragmatic seeking of truth”, “pragmatic taking into account the truth” and “truth-seeking pragmatism” with the help of the “truth-seeking” continuum evaluation model of translator behavior, and explores the motivations and strategies of translators’ translation behavior, in order to find some practical and valuable translation strategies or methods in the English translation of Chinese classics.
乡土语言作为中国文化的重要组成部分,特色鲜明,其英译对推动中国文化走向世界具有重要意义。刘震云的小说《一日三秋》通过生动描绘河南延津的民间风情与乡土世情,展现出浓郁的地方文化特色。本文在译者行为批评视域下,选取《一日三秋》葛浩文和林丽君英译版本为研究对象,采取定量与定性相结合的方法,统计译者在乡土语言英译过程中求真、半求真半务实、务实和零求真四类译者行为的比例,并结合典型例句分析。研究发现,译者行为表现出“求真为本,务实为用,灵活调整”的特点,有效传达了独特的中国乡土文化。Folk language, as an integral part of Chinese culture, has distinctive features, and its translation is crucial to promoting Chinese culture to the world. Liu Zhenyun’s novel One Day Three Autumns vividly depicts the folk customs and rural life of Yanjin, Henan, showcasing the rich local cultural characteristics. This paper, from the perspective of translator behavior criticism, takes the English translation of One Day Three Autumns by Ge Haowen and Lin Lijun as the research object. Using both quantitative and qualitative methods, it analyzes the proportion of four types of translator behavior—truth-seeking, half truth-seeking and half utility-attaining, utility-attaining, and zero truth-seeking—during the translation of folk language. The study finds that the translators’ behavior is characterized by “truth-seeking as the foundation, utility-attaining as the approach, and flexible adjustment”, effectively conveying the unique Chinese rural culture.
