Electrophysiology of vision - especially the electroretinogram (ERG) - is used as a non-invasive way for functional testing of the visual system. The ERG is a combined electrical response generated by neural and non-neuronal cells in the retina in response to light stimulation. This response can be recorded and used for diagnosis of numerous disorders. For both clinical practice and clinical trials it is important to process those signals in an accurate and fast way and to provide the results as structured, consistent reports. Therefore, we developed a freely available and open-source framework in Java (http://***/projectlidsI4sigproc). The framework is focused on an easy integration with existing applications. By leveraging well-established software patterns like pipes-and-filters and fluent interfaces as well as by designing the application programming interfaces (API) as an integrated domain specific language (DSL) the overall framework provides a smooth learning curve. Additionally, it already contains several processing methods and visualization features and can be extended easily by implementing the provided interfaces. In this way, not only can new processing methods be added but the framework can also be adopted for other areas of signal processing. This article describes in detail the structure and implementation of the framework and demonstrate its application through the software package used in clinical practice and clinical trials at the University Eye Hospital Tuebingen one of the largest departments in the field of visual electrophysiology in Europe.

Near the dawn of the petascale era, IO libraries had reached a stability in their function and data layout with only incremental changes being incorporated. The shift in technology, particularly the scale of parallel file systems and the number of compute processes, prompted revisiting best practices for optimal IO performance. Among other efforts like PLFS, the project that led to ADIOS, the ADaptable IO System, was motivated by both the shift in technology and the historical requirement, for optimal IO performance, to change how simulations performed IO depending on the platform. To solve both issues, the ADIOS team, along with consultation with other leading IO experts, sought to build a new IO platform based on the assumptions inherent in the petascale hardware platforms. This paper helps inform the design of future IO platforms with a discussion of lessons learned as part of the process of designing and building ADIOS.

Climbing Out of the Box and Into the Cloud: Building Web-Scale for Libraries

Libraries have made significant investments in computer resources and infrastructure. They now incur the costs of supporting an array of systems across workflows for print, licensed, and digital materials. Similarly, libraries have fragmented presences on the Web, where they must compete with search engines and other information resources in meeting the information needs of people. The Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) is building its next generation of services in the computing cloud, where applications and data are stored on the Internet rather than on a local computer, and libraries can use an application without having to worry about the supporting technology. Web-scale services will provide libraries with powerful new applications and services when and where needed.

This paper describes the Spelunkbots API, a proposed benchmark for computational and articial intelligence algorithms. The benchmark, developed by the authors, is an API designed to allow for AI controllers to be written for the game Spelunky: a challenging 2D platforming game that requires players to commit quick reactive behaviours as well as long-term deliberation in order to maximise reward and minimise completion time. In this paper we highlight the features of the Spelunky game and a rationale for its relevance as an AI benchmark. Followed by a description of how the original Spelunky source code has been modified to provide a testing environment for bots. As well as some examples of simple hand-written bots, we discuss the relevance of this benchmark in the context of current AI methods.

Best fit social choices: An alternative to arrow

This paper explores an approach to social choice which is an alternative to Arrow's social welfare function. We consider 'best fit' social rankings for any individual preferences through the definition of levels of agreement between preferences and rankings. We thereby avoid the pairwise approach of Arrow's independence and Pareto conditions, and we demonstrate the possibility of non-dictatorial social choice. Mie consider the rationality implications of a non-unique outcome, and determine additional properties, including majority-consistency, of the Condorcet process for determining the rankings. The approach also allows an interpretation of Sen's 'impossibility of a Paretian liberal' in terms of individual agreement.

The weather prediction code demands large computational performance to achieve fast and high-resolution simulations. Skillful programming techniques are required for obtaining good parallel efficiency on GPU supercomputers. Our framework-based weather prediction code ASUCA has achieved good scalability with hiding complicated implementation and optimizations required for distributed GPUs, contributing to increasing the maintainability;ASUCA is a next-generation highresolution meso-scale atmospheric model being developed by the Japan Meteorological Agency. Our framework automatically translates user-written stencil functions that update grid points and generates both GPU and CPU codes. User-written codes are parallelized by MPI with intra-node GPU peer-to-peer direct access. These codes can easily utilize optimizations such as overlapping technique to hide communication overhead by computation. Our simulations on the GPU-rich supercomputer TSUBAME 2.5 at the Tokyo Institute of Technology have demonstrated good strong and weak scalability achieving 209.6 TFlops in single precision for our largest model using 4,108 NVIDIA K20X GPUs.

The web application paradigm has become a dominant choice due to the ubiquity of web browsers across PCs and mobile devices, and the layer of abstraction that they provide. However, browsers have traditionally communicated only with servers, never from one browser to another. The WebRTC API overcomes this limitation, providing further avenues for the web application paradigm to evolve. In this paper we present Cyclon.p2p an implementation of the Cyclon peer sampling protocol using the WebRTC API. We provide a detailed overview of our system, and conduct a thorough evaluation of the implementation in real-world and simulated experiments. Our results strongly suggest that our implementation is feasible for large scale deployment in real world Web applications.

Herodotus rarely mentions specific wounds. This paper discusses the importance of thigh wounds suffered by Cambyses, Histiaeus, Cleomenes, and Miltiades, placing them in the context of the traditional folkloric motif of the "mutilated hero," showing that Herodotus intentionally chose certain wounds to stress the theme of transgression and its consequences.

The problems of utilizing heavy crude oil and natural bitumens centre on their high viscosity which makes them difficult to produce, store, transport and refine. These factors are reflected in costs. World reserves are substantial, however, perhaps as much as 7 trillion barrels estimated to represent 0.9 trillion barrels of recoverable oil. Social media analysis constitutes a scientific field that is rapidly gaining ground due to its numerous research challenges and practical applications, as well as the unprecedented availability of data in real time. Several of these applications have significant social and economical impact, such as journalism, crisis management, advertising, etc. However, two issues regarding these applications have to be confronted. The first one is the financial cost. Despite the abundance of information, it typically comes at a premium price, and only a fraction is provided free of charge. For example, Twitter, a predominant social media online service, grants researchers and practitioners free access to only a small proportion (1%) of its publicly available stream. The second issue is the computational cost. Even when the full stream is available, off the shelf approaches are unable to operate in such settings due to the real-time computational demands. Consequently, real world applications as well as research efforts that exploit such information are limited to utilizing only a subset of the available data. In this paper, we are interested in evaluating the extent to which analytical processes are affected by the aforementioned limitation. In particular, we apply a plethora of analysis processes on two subsets of Twitter public data, obtained through the service's sampling API's. The first one is the default 1% sample, whereas the second is the Gardenhose sample that our research group has access to, returning 10% of all public data. We extensively evaluate their relative performance in numerous scenarios.
