Designing and Reporting on Computational Experiments of Multi-objective component Selection Algorithm

One important issue of component-based software development is the minimization of the development cost and the maximization of the system reliability while satisfying functional requirements. There are numerous publications on this issue based on metaheuristic techniques, but there are two deficiencies: too tough to evaluate the performance of algorithms and fix parameters in the real-world application. To address this problem, a three phased algorithm is proposed by the Wu et al. [International Journal of Information Technology & Decision Making 5 (2011) 811-841]. This paper describes computational experience in solving the problems using the metaheuristics and the proposed algorithm. The results indicate the efficiency of the proposed algorithms in terms of overall nondominated vector generation, well converged set of solutions, and diversity of solutions. Computational results and simulation analysis further assist a decision maker to fix optimal parameters of metaheuristics including the number of iteration, crossover rate, and mutation rate, and explore hints in using metaheuristics for the problem.

Communications-oriented development of component-based vehicular distributed real-time embedded systems

We propose a novel model- and component-based technique to support communications-oriented development of software for vehicular distributed real-time embedded systems. The proposed technique supports modeling of legacy nodes and communication protocols by encapsulating and abstracting the internal implementation details and protocols. It also allows modeling and performing timing analysis of the applications that contain network traffic originating from outside of the system such as vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure, and cloud-based applications. Furthermore, we present a method to extract end-to-end timing models to support end-to-end timing analysis. We also discuss and solve the issues involved during the extraction of these models. As a proof of concept, we implement our technique in the Rubus component Model which is used for the development of software for vehicular embedded systems by several international companies. An architectural approach with separation of concerns to address extra-functional requirements in the development of embedded real-time software systems

A large proportion of the requirements on embedded real-time systems stems from the extra-functional dimensions of time and space determinism, dependability, safety and security, and it is addressed at the software level. The adoption of a sound software architecture provides crucial aid in conveniently apportioning the relevant development concerns. This paper takes a software-centered interpretation of the ISO 42010 notion of architecture, enhancing it with a component model that attributes separate concerns to distinct design views. The component boundary becomes the border between functional and extrafunctional concerns. The latter are treated as decorations placed on the outside of components, satisfied by implementation artifacts separate from and composable with the implementation of the component internals. The approach was evaluated by industrial users from several domains, with remarkably positive results. (C) 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. In this paper a new approach for handling the problem of comparing different complex algorithms is proposed. The main idea behind this research is to set up a framework that can be applied to the most well-known and widely used complex algorithms. A component-based framework, IEOCA (Intelligent Evaluation of Complex Algorithms) written in Java for building and studying complex algorithms like genetic algorithms and ant colony optimization is developed. The evaluation framework provides a standard testing methodology for comparing the accuracy and performance of selected algorithms.

Feature modeling has been widely used in domain engineering for the development and configuration of software products. A feature model represents the set of possible configurations to apply in a given context. Recently, this formalism was applied to the runtime (re-) configuration of systems with high variability and context changes, in which the selection of the best candidate configuration is seen as an optimization problem based on quality criteria. To this end, we propose an approach for the specification, measurement and optimization of runtime quality attributes based on feature models, and furthermore, we describe its integration into a component-based architecture for supporting dynamically adaptive systems. Feature models are annotated with quality-attribute properties and metrics, and then an efficient and flexible algorithm is used to deal with the optimization problem. We report on some examples of adaptation and quality-attribute scenarios in the context of a video surveillance domain, in order to illustrate the pros and cons of our approach.

One major problem in service design is the limited availability of information gathered during the development process. In particular, information on end-user requirements is difficult for designers, developers, and maintainers to access. Here, we provide a mechanism that supports the gathering and modeling of various types of information throughout the service and software development life cycle. As various existing tools focus on a particular part of the life cycle, essential information is not available, or it is more difficult to obtain in later stages. The linkage between information collected in the different stages is often lost. The implemented tool support enables the modeling of requirements;the abstraction of these requirements in the form of the required system functionalities, which can also be modeled;and the connection with component-based software engineering to support the design of ICT-enabled services.

software engineering researchers have extensively explored the reuse of components at source-code level. Contracts explicitly describe component behaviour, reducing development risk by exposing potential incompatibilities early in the development process. But to benefit fully from reuse, developers of safety-critical systems must also reuse safety evidence. Full reuse would require both extending the existing notion of component contracts to cover safety properties and using these contracts in both component selection and system certification. This is not as simple as it first appears. Much of the review, analysis, and test evidence developers provide during certification is system-specific. This makes it difficult to define safety contracts that facilitate both selecting components to reuse and certifying systems. In this paper, we explore the definition and use of safety contracts, identify challenges to component-based software reuse safety-critical systems, present examples to illustrate several key difficulties, and discuss potential solutions to these problems.

Control software systems for manufacturing plants reveal common system architectural elements. This suggests taking advantage of a development paradigm based on reusable components. Creating and upgrading a repository of reusable components suitable for many systems that share common characteristics present a challenge for engineers, especially if composition mechanisms must be founded on control theories of discrete event systems and if formal synthesis tools must be integrated into well-accepted component-based software development processes. This paper explores a component model and a pragmatic method for the development of control software systems. The method, along with the underlying component model, fills the gap between a hierarchical control theory and component-based software engineering. A detailed case study developed around a Festo didactic learning modular production system demonstrates the relevance of the proposed approach to industrial application.

H: A component-based specification language for heterogeneous applications

This paper presents H, a minimalistic specification language for designing heterogeneous software applications, particularly in the realms of robotics and industria, which takes advantage of a component-based software engineering (CBSE) approach. H copes with some of the most outstanding characteristics of these systems, like diversity at different levels (hardware platforms, programming languages, programmer skills), network distribution, real time and fault-tolerance. The H specification covers the life-cycle of any heterogeneous application. Its development system offers to the designer and/or builder a set of tools for specifying modules, generating code semiautomatically, debugging, maintenance, and a real time analysis of the system. Verifying Protocol Conformance Using software Model Checking for the Model-Driven Development of Embedded Systems

To facilitate modular development, the use of state machines has been proposed to specify the protocol (i.e., the sequence of messages) that each port of a component can engage in. The protocol conformance checking problem consists of determining whether the actual behavior of a component conforms to the protocol specifications on its ports. In this paper, we consider this problem in the context of the model-driven development (MDD) of embedded systems based on UML 2, in which UML 2 state machines are used to specify component behavior. We provide a definition of conformance which slightly extends those found in the literature and reduce the conformance check to a state space exploration. We describe a tool implementing the approach using the Java PathFinder software model checker and the MDD tool IBM Rational RoseRT, discuss its application to three case studies, and show how the tool repeatedly allowed us to find unexpected conformance errors with encouraging performance. We conclude that the approach is promising for supporting the modular development of embedded components in the context of industrial applications of MDD.
