MitoAnalyzer provides information about the effects of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and mutations in human mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). This program determines if a single base pair (bp) change is in the non-coding or coding region, in the first, second or third bp of the codon, in a rRNA, tRNA or a protein, causes an amino acid (aa) change, the nature of that change, the position of the aa change in the protein, and the new aa sequence of the changed protein. Mutations associated with published mitochondrial diseases are noted. This program, thus, facilitates rapid analysis and evaluation of SNPs and mutations in human mtDNA. A desktop computer program has been written to implement state-of-the-art algorithms for the determination the Most Probable Number (MPN), its confidence limits, and correction for bias. The program is flexible with regard to the number of tubes or the number and amounts of the dilutions used. Special attention has been paid to ease of use, especially when multiple MPN calculations must be made. Input can be either from a file or from the keyboard (results are written both to the screen and to an output rile), and the program can be customized for up to nine sets of input parameters.

OPENLAND3 belongs to a suite of computer programs included in the POLLSCAPE simulation model. These programs make it possible to calculate estimates of pollen loadings in lake basins or bogs using vegetation data. OPENLAND3, written in Visual Basic 6, is designed to produce appropriate vegetation data files from vegetation maps stored in a Geographical Information System. It calculates percentage cover of plant taxa in concentric circles at increasing distances from a central point, using either real digitised maps or hypothetical maps (simulated landscape designs). Such data are necessary for simulation of pollen dispersal and deposition, and for calculation of pollen productivity estimates and relevant source area of pollen using specific mathematical models developed by palynologists, such as the Prentice-Sugita model. OPENLAND3 also produces output files needed to run RS-OPEN, another program included in POLLSCAPE, in order to obtain estimates of pollen loadings in lakes or bogs. The rationale of OPENLAND3, the algorithm used, and a modification of RS-OPEN (RS-OPEN2) are described. A test of the programme capability using a detailed vegetation map from southern Sweden shows that simulations using OPENLAND3 produce coherent results. Pollen loading for species characterized by high pollen productivity is higher than for species with low pollen productivity. Altering the wind speed has also a significant effect on pollen loading. As wind speed increases, the proportions of the light pollen decrease, while the heavy pollen types increase, which is what empirical data suggest, and what the model predicts in earlier studies. The approach to validation of a computer program for an analytical instrument as a component of the analytical method (using this instrument with the program) is discussed, This approach was used for validating a new program for atomic absorption analysis, The validation plan derived from this approach was based on minimising the influence of all steps of the analytical procedure on the analytical results obtained by the method. In this way significant changes in the results may be caused only by replacement of the previous program by the new one. The positive validation conclusion was based on the comparison of the results of the analysis of suitable reference materials obtained with the new program and with its precursor in the same conditions, and also on comparison of their deviations from the accepted reference values for these materials, with the corresponding uncertainties.

The short computer program described provides for rapid calculation of tumour and normal tissue distribution data for radiolabelled specific antibody and non-specific immunoglobulin in the nude mouse xenograft model. A computer program for nonlinear regression analysis is described. The program, SIMP, is written in BASIC for use with a wide range of microcomputers. The simplex algorithm is used to minimize the sum of the squared residuals around the fitted line, and the data can be weighted if required. The program is applicable to a wide range of pharmacological procedures requiring curve fitting, and the analysis of protein-binding data is given as an example.

By virtue of the instability of O2.-, most of the methods used for measuring superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity are indirect and produce a non-linear response with respect to the amount of SOD enzyme. For this reason a linearization procedure must be used to estimate enzyme activity. A computer method written in Turbo Pascal for IBM-PC or compatibles is presented which simplified calculations. The program applied to methods using different O2.- generation systems (i.e. fluorescent light, xantine-xantine oxidase, etc.) or indicating scavengers (cytochrome c or Nitro Blue Tetrazolium). It could also be used for both crude extracts or samples at different steps of purification.

The establishing of a correct diagnosis in patients with ovarian malignancy requires the combination of a variety of methods of examination. An inquiry for following of malignoma patients has been compiled, accompanied by an adequate computer program. Beside general information regarding the patient, diagnosis and treatment, the inquiry also includes the case history, data regarding clinical, ultrasonographic and preoperative examinations, surgery, histologic findings and follow-up after termination of treatment. A user-friendly computer program was developed for recording and processing of all available data collected during the diagnostic and treatment procedures. The inquiry and the computer program have been in use for three years and we find they are very useful in follow-up of patients with ovarian malignancy. Data are collected at one site, transparent and always available. Statistical analysis of collected data can be performed by computer. The aim of this uniform inquiry and computer program is a concurrent, radical and simplified collecting, processing and comparing of data at each center and between centers dealing with the treatment of ovarian malignancy.

Background: For various cultural and historical reasons, African Americans are less likely than Caucasians to engage in advance care planning (ACP) for healthcare decisions. Purpose: This pilot study tested whether an interactive computer program could help overcome barriers to effective ACP among African Americans. Methods: African American adults were recruited from traditionally Black churches to complete an interactive computer program on ACP, pre-/post-questionnaires, and a follow-up phone interview. Results: Eighteen adults (mean age =53.2 years, 83% female) completed the program without any problems. Knowledge about ACP significantly increased following the computer intervention (44.9% 61.3%, p=0.0004), as did individuals' sense of self-determination. Participants were highly satisfied with the ACP process (9.4:1 = not at all satisfied, 10 = extremely satisfied), and reported that the computer-generated advance directive accurately reflected their wishes (6.4;1 = not at all accurate, 7 = extremely accurate). Follow-up phone interviews found that >80% of participants reported having shared their advance directives with family members and spokespeople. Conclusion: Preliminary evidence suggests that an interactive computer program can help African Americans engage in effective advance care planning, including creating an accurate advance directive document that will be shared with loved ones.
