A computer program has been created to separate overlapping exothermic DTA (DSC) effects, obtained under isothermal conditions, occurring due to simultaneous crystallization processes, and also to calculate the kinetic parameters of the processes represented by each peak. A graphical method for the estimation of the required parameters, i.e. initialization, and the refinement of the initial values by the least squares method is presented. The procedure for the determination of the kinetic parameters from DTA data is demonstrated on a model system and on a kinetic analysis of mullite formation from single phase gel. The two-step mullite crystallization model was proposed and the fitting was remarkably good throughout the whole temperature range. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Calculation and analysis of the scattering near field from some simple and complex targets using a method of picture elements (PEL) and a computer program. The analysis is based upon a method of high-frequency approximation. The uniqueness of this method is derived from the simplicity of the theoretical basis such as the physical optics (PO) and the vector potential. The calculated results show that there are much difference between the near field and the far field. And the characteristics of the near field are more complex. This work has practical engineering value in the area of the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), electromagnetic interference (EMI) prediction and electromagnetic scattering (EMS) et al.

Use of near infrared (NIR) technology with a software system for calibrating models can reduce the start-up time for stream-analyzer systems from 1 year to less than a month. In an application in a Canadian refinery, NIR with software calibration offers a 98% utilization factor and better performance than NIR using conventional calibration. The utilization rate is higher than for a conventional analyzer because almost no service is required to maintain an NIR system with software calibration. The refinery uses Freetune, a software program developed by PetroMix to create robust unit models, in conjunction with the NIR application to reduce model-development time.

Considers the capabilities and limitations of currently available programs for tubing string analysis. These are generally based on the equations and principles of Lubinski, Althouse, and Logan and later extended by Hammerlindl. Advancing from single-string analysis to multiple strings using the same formulae and applying the principle of superposition can create errors. Buoyancy effects and helical buckling, in particular, are considered. A more advanced program has been developed which can address multiple completions of up to three stacked packers and tapered tubing strings with up to three different tubing and casing sizes per section.

THERMOFLEX is a computer graphics program developed by Thermoflow as an addition to GT PRO, a software package for the design of the steam cycle of a combined cycle or a gas turbine based industrial CHP scheme. An initial design in GT PRO can be further analysed and optimized using GT MASTER, GT MACRO and PEACE. The interactions between the programs were examined when applied to the addition of a new gas turbine and heat recovery boiler to an existing CHP site.;Thermoflow has introduced THERMOFLEX, their own graphics program, as an addition to their extensive suite of design programs. Linking THERMOFLEX to GT PRO and GT MASTER has produced a powerful tool for building up complex systems using elements designed with these programs. The capability of this new software was tested and discussed.

The lognormal distribution has a number of properties that do not lend themselves to simple “back-of-the-envelope” calculations. Mathematical relationships are presented for the basic parameters of the large population lognormal distribution as a function of characteristics available to, or needed by, the risk analyst. A freeware computer program called LOGNORM4 has been written to take the tedium out of determining various characteristics of lognormal distributions, given 1 of 15 sets of values that uniquely specify a lognormal distribution.

This article addresses three types of learner support: (a) support for optimizing use of a computer program, (b) support for learning content, and (c) support for monitoring and enhancing learning. It proposes a multi-dimensional model of learner-support space defined by the intrusiveness of the delivery methods employed and the prescriptiveness of the content of the learner support provided. Methods of delivering such support through various interface elements, as well as several scenario-based examples of learner support matching the designer's philosophical beliefs, are discussed. The article closes by identifying relevant research questions for future study.
