Visualisation of the activities that occur within a processor is an important aspect of computer architecture education. Various systems have been developed for this purpose, mostly based on specific processor architectures. At the University of Edinburgh two (closely related) simulation systems, HASE and Simjava, have been developed, both of which offer a variety of visualisation facilities. HASE is a general purpose simulation environment designed to support both research and teaching in computer architecture. Simjava is a Java implementation of HASE, which allows live simulations to be incorporated into WWW pages and run remotely. It has been used to embed active diagrams into an Integrated Learning Support Environment for computer architecture. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper describes the software and hardware developed for the laboratory component of a junior/senior level computer architecture course. The principal feature of this course is that students are required to design and build their own computers using programmable logic devices (PLD's). The students use a simple register transfer language (CURTL) with a simulator and commercial PLD tools for their design activity. A graphical PC based debugging tool provides the I/O and main memory for the student built computers.

In this paper, a comprehensive overview of computer architecture for Digital Signal Processing is given. Such architectures are seen as the result of constraining influences from the nature of digital signal processing algorithms, architectural techniques including appropriate choice of primitive elements, the underlying digital system technology, and programming languages for digital signal processing. Following a consideration of these influences, several examples are given ranging from chips through board level processors, to attached support processors with very high throughput. Trends for the future are discussed throughout the paper.

There is an increasing trend to use digital signal-processing techniques to solve real-time problems. This leads to a need for processors which can perform complicated signal-processing algorithms on large amounts of data at high speeds. computer architectures for this purpose ate shown to arise from a consideration of several structural factors, including technology, the algorithms to be performed, data structures, and the programming language. When these factors are complementary, efficient yet economical designs result. The structural factors are described, and then several computer designs are discussed in light of this conceptual framework.
